As the curtain comes down on the 96th Oscars, Chrono Hunter checks out what horological beauties made the headlines on and off the red carpet in 2024. With last year’s highlights including Omega, JLC and Rolex among the hard hitters, what does this year have in store for dedicated keepers of time?

First up is former Mummy and Bedazzled star Brendan Fraser. That’s right watch peeps, Fraser actually starred in this offbeat chick flick alongside Elizabeth Hurley. Unlike shy Eliot Richardson in the movie, Fraser dazzled at The Oscars by picking up the Best Actor Award for The Whale. Oh and his OMEGA Speedmaster Chronoscope wasn’t too shabby either.

The Oscars are all about glitz and a touch of luxury right? Wrong watch fans as there’s a sprinkling of the unexpected as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would vouch for with his watch choice at the The 95th Oscars. Enter stage left the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Date. Although the Black Adam actor and former WWE star missed out on Oscar gold, it didn’t mean he wasn’t dressed to impress.

Throwing a horological curveball (for us anyway), Johnson paired a pale pink satin tux, white pocket square, black bow tie and rose floral boutonnière alongside his timepiece of choice. Presenting an award at the Oscars for Best Animated Feature Film with Emily Blunt, his Jungle Book compadre, they were seen off camera guffawing.

This was caught behind the scenes where Dwayne Johnson sits on Emily Blunt’s lap. No mean feat, I hear you ask nor was it wearing a TAG Heuer to the Oscars. Yet it seemed to compliment his attire. This might not be in our 5 of the best TAG Heuer watches to buy now.

Nevertheless, it did raise our timekeeping eyebrow at Chrono Hunter HQ. I mean, it’s not as if the former Miami Hurricanes football player can’t afford it. A hardcore Panerai follower his collection is overflowing with timepieces from all major luxury watches.

He wore a 44m Panerai Submersible Goldtech at Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and has worn the brand in many movies such as Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw from 2019. Meanwhile he is also fond of aviation inspired watches and has been spotted with a Breitling Superocean Heritage B01 Chronograph not to mention the limited edition IWC Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar Spitfire, launched in 2019.

So what exactly is so special about this men’s watch? Multi-purpose and yes a little underwhelming for us, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional comes with a smoky brown sunray dial that is built for anything. Pushed to the limit like one of the Rock’s workouts, the Calibre 5 automatic has a 38 hour power reserve with hours, minutes, seconds and date functions.

We’re surprised it fitted as this slim dive watch looks out of sorts even on a 20cm plus wrist. Hiding under his crisp white shirt cuff, it offers 200m of water resistance, a folding clasp steel push button buckle and pulsates at 4Hz.

Is this enough for you to buy a TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional? We’re not so sure, but the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Bamford Professional Limited Edition would be our pick.

What we are confident about is Johnson’s penchant for TAG Heuer watches. He has previously sported a TAG Heuer Monaco and Carrera Chronograph featuring a brushed green dial, in-house Heuer 02 automatic movement and tachymeter bezel. Although steel sport dive watches and the Oscars don’t quite fit the bill we thought it was an unexpected Oscars spoiler.

Like Johnson’s catchphrase, if you want to smell (feel or wear) what the Rock is cooking, you can buy a TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 Date for the RRP of £2,400 - at the time of writing.

Lenny Kravitz – Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso

The Oscars brings out all the kings of bling and none can compete with the rock and roll icon that is Lenny Kravitz. And it’s time we went his way, timelords.

The legendary guitarist strolled down this year’s champagne coloured carpet in a black chiffon type robe with chest exposed unlike his wrist. Nestled on it was the Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso Duo-Face which only the US star could pull off. Blending ultra luxury with a casual swagger, Kravitz clearly knows his horological beans.

Buy a Jaeger-Le Coultre like this and you’ll benefit from two dials for the price of one. The Duo Face can flip and integrate with consummate ease to suit any smart affair. Although his outfit and bare naked chest, chains and sunnies look a bit out of sorts with The Oscars, the timepiece accompaniment didn’t.

Why tell the time with one dial when you can have two? Bearing a silvery guilloché pattern with Arabic numerals on one side with baton hour markers and tiny second sub-dial at 6 o’clock, this is complimented by a sublime Clous de Paris guilloché in black on the other. We aren’t surprised he chose to display the all black side accentuating his black Oscars attire.

To give it its full Hollywood name, The Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso Classic Duo-Face Small Seconds is for those who want to show off with a unique men’s watch. Sure, it might be a scratch magnet, there’s no hacking and the movement isn’t anything to write home about…literally.

But nothing comes close in terms of aesthetics and hasn’t done since it was launched at the end of the 1960s. Glamorous, chic, cool, understated, distinctive and pioneering. Exactly in line with The Oscars.

In 1930, when businessman César de Trey was given the unenviable task of ensuring maximum protection on a watches glass during polo matches, he never could have imagined what would happen next. His flip case concept would alter the horological sphere after approaching his ami, Jacques-David Le Coultre, the Reverso changed time in an instant.

With its nod to the vintage Reverso models of the 1930’s, a second time zone is what’s going on here. Travellers will love this terrific timepiece for its simple looks, reversible case and timeless sophistication.

This oh so popular dress watch delivers a rather more irregular shape that is more at home on the rose gold versions. A rare model in the Tank collection, the Tank Chinoise has not had many interations over time with the previous update coming in 2004 via the Privé Cartier Paris (CPCP) series, with limited editions of emblematic Cartier models spanning two decades between 1998-2008.

With its ruby-tipped crown, the 2022 models have replaced the traditional Breguet hands with the iconic blue sword hands. And the square case has been revamped to appear more rectangular making it stand out more.

Available in yellow gold, platinum and diamond-set platinum with open worked dials decorated with lacquer. The RRP of the Cartier Tank Chinoise is £27,100 - at the time of writing.

Ryan Seacrest - Rolex Daytona Ref. 116508

It’s about time we showed you the big horological guns at The Oscars.

The Rolex Daytona is what Paul Newman represents not just to the silver screen but to this iconic watch. It’s no surprise however that we saw this timepiece turn up shimmering from the wrist of Ryan Seacrest. The former American Idol presenter and TV host is a red carpet veteran and fashion conscious chap as seen by his many appearances at The Oscars.

But we ain’t interested in his look per se but his horological weapon of choice. In fact, Seacrest sported an attractive Rolex Daytona ref. 6263 in yellow gold at the 76th Golden Globe Awards in 2017 in Beverly Hills.

The Oscars 2024 was yet again another event that showed the best of the acting world, and their respective high quality timepieces.

There were a range of notable stars and bizarre events that occurred throughout the evening. Ryan Gosling won the audience over with a stonking rendition of “I’m Just Ken” from the highly successful Barbie movie. Dressed entirely in pink and flashing (John Cena aside) a coy grin behind black sunglasses, he really is a heartthrob! Oh and a wrist worthy TAG Heuer ambassador

Sure, there were some other offbeat moments when 16 time WWE champion John Cena entered to present the award for best costume… butt naked. With theories of it being a satanic ritual test from freemasons or just a little light hearted irony, celebs and TV-watchers were both taken aback.

Outside of the weird and wonderful, credit must be given to Robert Downey Jr. who took home his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor, while Oppenheimer stole the glitzy bacon for Best Actor, Best Director and Best Film among other categories. The 96th Academy Awards was perhaps the biggest sweep for any film since Titanic received 11 awards in 1998.

But our naked obsession is of course with our wrist worthy companions. Here’s what luxury watches we spotted at the 2024 Oscars.

While he missed out on Best Supporting Actor to Robert Downey Jr in Oppenheimer, we are sure he was more than pleased with his smash hit song and dance routine. Horophiles however were much more interested in a little something protruding from his wrist.

Totalling around 4.8-carats and secured onto a black alligator leather strap with a white gold pin buckle, expect a 50 hour power reserve and 28,800VpH through the Calibre 7 Automatic movement. Be it on the private boat or sipping drinks with Sir Richard Branson on Necker Island, this oozes sophistication.

Ke Huy Quan - Cartier Santos-Dumont Skeleton Micro-Rotor

A lot of speculation was thrown up following Robert Downey Jr’s alleged snub of Ke Huy Quan. With Ke Huy Quan going in for the handshake and Downey Jr giving a lacklustre response, questions were raised about his intentions…

But we ain't here for this tittle-tattle. Let’s go on with the show.

While he wasn’t up for anything this year, Quan won Best Supporting Actor last year for his role in "Everything Everywhere All At Once”. He knows all about how an Oscar feels! Did you know that he was in the Indiana Jones film, Temple Of Doom alongside fellow legend Harrison Ford.

Fate would have it that Mr Ford is more of a Breitling fan which you keen horophiles may have noted him pull off at the Golden Globes.

It appears the actor has levelled up his wrist wear for the 2024 Oscars from last year’s Omega Globemaster to the uber glam, see through Cartier Santos-Dumont Skeleton Micro-Rotor.

One key selling point is the circular aperture residing at 7 o’clock. It offers a yellow gold replica of the Santos-Dumont aircraft which is counterbalanced by an openworked balance at 1 o’clock.

The blue hands are clearly distinguishable which allows the 46 hour power reserve and 28,800 VpH timepiece to be functional. If the Oscars did an award for the category of best special occasion watches, this would definitely take home the gold.

Matthew McConaughey - Jacob & Co Jean Bugatti

Alright, alright alright.

Not many actors have reached the same critical acclaim as Matthew McConaughey. Turning up to the Oscars with partner Camila Alves, the man of many motion pictures presented at the Oscars 2024 with typical classic southern charm.

Of course, he’s not exempt from earning a few awards of his own. Winning the Oscar for Best Actor in 2014 for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, he knows how to dress for any part. But what was he flexing? Arriving in red-tinted shades and black bow-tie, he sported a phenomenal Jacob & Co. Jean Bugatti.

Inspired by the 1930s Bugatti roadster grille, perhaps the most interesting part is the Calibre JCFM09. Fitted with dual one-minute flying tourbillon, the carriages are inspired by the Bugatti logo while general timekeeping is read by the two small hands facing inwards.

The chronograph function is read on two split hands, both of which are retrograde and enjoy a jumping 30–minute counter. Cleverly, the chronograph function moves like the RPM counter of the famed sports car, meaning when the first hand reaches 10, it jumps straight back to 0 while the other hand jumps from 0 to 1.

Debuted in 2022, the watch boasts a range of handy features, including a tourbillon, 5Hz double retrograde chronograph and standard timekeeping. You can expect a 48 hour power reserve and steady beat of 28,800VpH. Oscar worthy material? You bet your bottom dollar.

Sterling K.Brown - IWC Portugieser Regulateur Tourbillon

Sterling by name and sterling by nature.

This debonair actor waltzed onto the Oscars red carpet, decked out with a classic black suit and bow tie.However, Mr. Brown didn’t rock up to spoil the party…but rather captivate his audience for all together different reasons.

Last year he earned an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree after giving a fabulous commencement speech for a graduating class at Washington University in St. Louis. In acting, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Oscars for American Fiction. Unfortunately, he missed out to Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.

All is not lost, as the three Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe recipient still dazzled us with a beautiful IWC Portugieser Regulateur Tourbillon. Therefore, there is a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, the hour hand at the subdial at 12 o’clock and the minute hand which is the large, silver hand in the centre of the dial. This complexity requires an excellent movement which is found in the manual wind calibre 98845 and yields a 46 hour power reserve.

With a limited edition run of 100 watches, you can no longer buy an IWC Portugieser Regulateur Tourbillon at retail as it has been discontinued. You can buy it on the secondary market for upwards of £28,000 as of March 2024.

Robert Downey Jr - Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph

If we can get past the initial controversy of Robert Donwey Jr snubbing Ke Huy Quan or Jimmy Kimmel’s timely quip about his previous drug abuse, can we admire his outfit that he wore at the Oscars 2024?

Dressed in black, he kept things looking oh so sharp and refined as the Dolittle actor gracefully accepted his award for Best Supporting Actor in Oppenheimer.

This isn’t his first rodeo either. Winning a Golden Globe and BAFTA for the same award, he’s milking this Oppenheimer role for everything it’s got! Alas, this mensch would not be complete if not for the gorgeous Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph.

Here he is, the big winner of the most successful film from 2023.

Cillian Murphy took home the spoils for Best Actor for Oppenheimer, adding another trophy to his ever-expanding cabinet which features Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award For Outstanding Performance.

For a man with such success from Oppenheimer, his other roles in Peaky Blinders and Misterman have raised his profile as an actor in demand. Outside of acting, his wristwear is a masterclass of watch collecting. In this case, he adorns the same timepiece he wore to the Baftas 2024…the Omega De Ville Prestige.

But there’s something mysterious about this timepiece. What appears classically conventional and a solid link to the 1970s classic Royal Oak, is in fact completely done over with a very industrial design. Not quite the Kraftwerk of luxury watches but you get the point.

Gone are the counters and the indexes and you can say Sayonara to the Grand Tapisserie aesthetic. All that remains is vertical satin finishing from bracelet to bezel and subcounters..sans snailed pattern or edging.

The Royal Oak hands do remain however and they are filled with Luminova in order to prioritise legibility. For the chronograph functions, only the hands remain which may detract from their original purpose. But what is modern art without sacrifice right?

In case you want people to know that this isn’t your “standard” Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the brand has kindly laid out 1017 ALYX 9SM in sizable text across 6 o’clock.

Beating at 28,800Vph or 4Hz, the timepieces are powered by the 4409 movement and have an impressive 70 hour power reserve. Offering flyback chronograph functionality, hours, minutes and small seconds.

This steel Premier B09 Chronograph keeps the functionality of the chronograph and adds a gorgeous design outlay, including a 40mm x 13mm dimension layout, screw-down caseback and 100 metres of water resistance.

These circular shaped watches do have a certain level of dressiness to them. Tipping the scales at 95 grams, this sits in the happy medium of a slightly heavy dress watch, but a light sports timepiece. Nothing wrong with the middle ground!

The dial has a silvery white sheen and sunray aesthetic to allow light to promote various elements such as the silvered Arabic hour markers emanating instant legibility not to mention the dual chronograph subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock.

Opting to flash the horological goods with a Constellation, he chooses a variation with enough precious metal to turn a steel-lover's stomach! Sized at 41mm, this number follows on from the classic Constellation visual with a number of now-famous characteristics.

Featuring claws on the sides of the case, these were introduced in 1982 and are used to represent eternity to give them that Constellation feel. There are even half-moon facets which are another direct link to the original models.

Measuring 41mm x 13.5mm thick, this material is Omega’s very own alloy. Inspired by the planet Sedna, or the reddest planet in the solar-system, the materials feature a few other components like palladium and copper in order to give the watches their colour and shine.

The dials are sun-brushed blue and fitted with a date window located at 6 o’clock. This resides just below the singular star emblem that acts as a confirmation of the watches chronometric precision. The hands and faceted indexes are all made out of 18K Sedna gold.

50 years since English teacher Robert Opel stormed the stage during David Niven’s handover to Elizabeth Taylor, where she was due to present the Best Picture gong, Cena recreated that candid moment in 2024. Complete with an aptly positioned envelope for Best Costume Design.

There were many standouts to admire from The 2024 Oscars with all the major luxury brands in attendance, vying for position.
