Review: The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5726/1a-001

A Brief History of Patek Philippe 

Antoine Patek and Adrien Philippe met in 1844.  Patek had already established himself as watchmaker to royalty and Philippe was renowned for the beautiful watches he designed for women.  

They officially formed their company in 1851 and showcased their pocket watches at the Great Exhibition in London where they presented Queen Victoria with a Patek Philippe pocket watch.  It was made of blue enamel and embellished with diamond flowers. 

Patek Philippe introduced the Nautilus in 1976 and reference 5726 was first unveiled at Baselworld 2010. 

A Closer Look at the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5726/1a-001

The Patek Pilippe 5726/1a-001 is a stylish stainless steel watch with a rounded octagonal shaped bezel.  The case is 40.5mm with a depth of 11.3mm.  The grey dial has horizontal stripes and fades darker towards the edge. 

There are luminous dots around the perimeter, denoting minutes.

The most outstanding feature of this watch is the moon phase complication which is a notable addition to what is essentially an elegant sports watch.  The moon phase sits in the centre of the lower half of the dial. 

Unlike the calendar complication, which needs resetting manually when going from February to March each year, the moon phase only needs resetting once every 222 years.  

Although the watch dial looks uncluttered and is very easy to read, it also has day, month and date apertures.   

This watch has white baton hour markers, with a double baton at the 12 point and the date aperture at the 6 position.  Beneath the 12 point is the brand name in white and below that two apertures side by side showing day/date. 

Below that is the place of origin: Geneve.

This reference comes with the stylish and very comfortable stainless steel bracelet, or the  sophisticated black alligator strap.   

The case has an exhibition back, allowing you to view the mesmerising inner workings of the watch movement.

The Patek Philippe 5726/1a-001 is powered by the calibre 324 S QA 24/H/303 movement. It’s self-winding, powerfully anti-magnetic and has a power reserve of up to 45 hours.

The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5726/1a-001 has been discontinued, but the last RRP was £39,530.  Like many collectable luxury watches that have been discontinued, the pre-owned market has skyrocketed. 

Pre-owned prices for this watch are in the £120,000 to £140,000 range right now. 

Although there’s no guarantee, prices are likely to keep rising.  If you buy a pre-owned 5726, it’s likely that it will hold its value at a minimum, and most likely increase in value over the long term. 

This makes it likely to be a very good investment.

How to style 

This is a beautiful watch with an adaptable style.  The stainless steel bracelet is more sporty than the alligator strap and looks just as good with suits as it does with more casual wear. 

The alligator strap works beautifully with more formal wear.
