Newswatch: A. Lange & Söhne Releases Zeitwerk, Exclusive Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph, Step Back in Time With The Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Starwheel

So what’s making the news this time? Let’s find out as Newswatch is hot on the heels of the latest stories hitting the luxury watch sector.

  • Haute Complication is taken to the next level with not one but two variations of A. Lange & Söhne’s award-winning Zeitwerk.
  • As part of its Overseas collection, “Holy Trinity” member Vacheron Constantin launches its new Overseas Chronograph.
  • A display dating back 400 years, the wandering hour complication has been given a contemporary makeover thanks to The Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Starwheel.

A. Lange & Söhne History Makers With Second Gen Zeitwerk

Prestigious winner of the renowned "L' Aiguille d'Or" (“Golden Hand“), A. Lange & Söhne has raised the horological benchmark again with their latest second-generation mechanical timepiece.

Available in either pink gold or platinum, two new Zeitwerk alternatives have emerged. Evoking their award-winning presence as it did in 2009, this stalwart German outfit developed the unparalleled engineering feat of jumping hour and minute numerals as well as a continual force escapement.

But this time around, the horological boat has been pushed even further. For the first time in nearly 15 years, the Saxony watchmaking powerhouse delivers understated technical innovation featuring seven patents across the movement. Walter Lange’s motto was “to never stand still” and this is reflected in both the watch and his drive in spearheading the company.

Buy A. Lange & Söhne and you are guaranteed first-rate mechanics, exquisite craftsmanship and all manner of complications.

Naturally, the greatest respect and care has been paid to its former self applying subtle design tweaks. Notice the German silver time bridge which catches your eye immediately when gazing at the dial. Yet this is a trick David Copperfield would be proud of as it does not contain genuine silver. It’s merely material often employed by A. Lange & Söhne when making bridges.

Careful consideration has gone into revamping the time bridge allowing more space for the seconds sub-dial located at 6 o’clock. Timekeeping is truly an art even in the slightest amendment. So what else should we shout about? The final twelve hours are now in red where the power reserve indicator is situated.

On the other hand, its “Made in Germany” wording has moved from the time bridge sitting proudly close to the seconds display. Let’s move on to the inner workings of the Zeitwerk. Boasting a whopping 450 separate movement components and a calibre L043.6, it has dual mainsprings with a barrel design that has been patent protected.

A 72 hour power reserve means this terrific timepiece has enough to skip through more than 4,300 jumps - 72 jumps if you include all of the three discs on the dial. But the Germans are as efficient as putting their sunbeds first on loungers!

Measuring less than 42mm, the easier hour setting function is seamless while you can set the hour disc with consummate ease thanks to the pusher, situated at 4 o’clock.

Lange & Söhne have also set to work on decreasing the razor thin case thickness to just 12.2mm by less than half a centimetre. A technical accomplishment in itself, they deserve a prize for redefining watchmaking in this way.

Overseas Chronograph by Vacheron Constantin Debuts

Inspired by the spirit of wanderlust, Vacheron Constantin goes for gold (pink gold to be precise) with its latest inception that could prove to be the ultimate travel companion.

For more than 250 years, the joy of exploration has been the main ethos behind Vacheron Constantin. Discovery of the world has been just as fundamental to the Maison’s principles.

As time and travel go together like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, the Swiss watchmaker pays respect to both themes with the Overseas Chronograph. Suitable for everyday use, it is the perfect partnership of informal luxury refinery and sophistication.

Here, Vacheron Constantin doth their horological hat to previous steel models that were extremely popular. Featuring a striking blue-lacquered dial, The Overseas Chronograph offers watch lovers a beautiful 18K 5N pink gold case. This colour can be seen throughout including on the markers, crown and bezel.

Measuring 42.5mm in diameter, the sunburst satin finish is a joy to behold while blue Super-LumiNova glows on the hours and minute hands. With more than 250 separate pieces, it enjoys a column-wheel chronograph, a self-winding calibre 5200, crystal caseback and date window located between 4 o’ clock and 5 o’ clock.

If you want to buy a watch with interchangeable straps then this is certainly one to consider. Offering three interchangeable straps it will ensure you can tailor The Overseas Chronograph for casual wear or evening attire.

Part of the Overseas collection, these smart luxury watches are available in pink gold, blue alligator for a touch of elegance and blue rubber for a sportier look. The instant strap or bracelet switcheroo embodies casual elegance at its finest.

Step Back in Time With The Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Starwheel

Following on from the success of The 50th Anniversary Royal Oak collection comes the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Starwheel. Fresh from the Vallée de Joux for 2023, these high-end timepieces were first produced back in 1991. But time moves on as they say.

Based on the wandering hour complication dating back four centuries, the Swiss manufacturer has brought this incredible display up to the present day. Sure, Audemars Piguet have other models in this collection such as the Code 11.59 Tourbillon Openworked, Flying Tourbillon and Perpetual Calendar. But this model is the one of the new kids on the block.

Measuring 41mm and less than 10.7mm thick, time seems to have stood still in the blue aventurine dial. Emanating a stunning constellation type display resembling ships drifting across the ocean, it provides a strong two tone black ceramic and white gold case and a self-winding calibre 4310. The power reserve isn’t bad either with sufficient energy lasting almost 72 hours.

Acting as a substitute for the hour hand, you will find three black wandering discs composed of PVD coated aluminium. Each of the discs houses four white Arabic numerals numbered from 1 to 12 with the second hand sweeping around the middle.

White gold hands made from 18K white gold, a black inner bezel and a double curved sapphire crystal case ensures Audemars Piguet have not compromised on any design element.

The dome like shape on the interior surface and arched profile results in a fascinating visual experience. Born in Le Brassus it may be but to buy an Audemars Piguet with a wandering hour complication could be the ideal addition to any collection.
