Review: Rolex Yacht-Master 16622

A Brief History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

The first Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992.  It was the first time Rolex had introduced a brand new model since 1964 - when they unveiled the Daytona.

The Yacht-Master 16622 was released in 1999 and was the first watch to be made of Rolex’s combination of platinum and steel, known as Rolesium.  This reference was discontinued in 2016 and replaced with the Yacht-Master 116622.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 16622 has a 40mm case, the dial is made of 950 platinum.  Hour markers are dots, with batons at the 6 and 9 hour marks and a triangle at the 12 O’clock location.  The 3 O’clock position has a date aperture with cyclops for easy reading.  The Rolex Yacht-Master 16622 bezel is also 950 platinum, sand-blasted, with polished, raised numbers for the 60-minute tachymeter. The bezel is bidirectional with a beveled edge for easy grip.

The bright red sweeping second hand stands out against the platinum dial and matches the “YACHT MASTER” name printed in red above the 6 O’clock position. The minute and hour hands are white and the hour hand has the famous Mercedes sign.

The Yacht-Master 16622 is waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet).

This Rolex Yacht-Master 16622 can be bought pre-owned for between £9,000 and £14,000 depending on the age and condition of the watch.  Not quite as popular as other Rolex sports watches, such as the Submariner or the Daytona, it can be harder to find.  But like most Rolex watches, you can be quite sure the Rolex Yacht-Master 16622 will hold its value at the least, and probably increase in value over the long term.

How to style the Rolex Yacht-Master 16622

The Yacht-Master 16622 s very similar to the Submariner in many ways, but it goes from being a tool watch to a dressy one a little easier.  Understated because of its silver colour, it will go with virtually anything.  Wear it with sailing gear and switch to smart casual without having to change your watch.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a Rolex sports watch that’s a little more dressy than other, more popular sports watches, the Rolex Yacht-Master 16622 could be a good choice.  The fact that there are fewer of them than Daytonas or Submariners means you’re wearing something a little more out of the ordinary.
