If you thought the MoonSwatch caused a seismic shift in the watch world, time to brace yourselves. As a surprise post-script to Watches and Wonders 2026, the new Swatch x Audemars Piguet "Royal Pop" collaboration is a glorious, neon-drenched disruption that bypasses the wrist. 

Trading the traditional integrated bracelet for a calfskin lanyard, this jaw-dropping partnership delivers eight avant-garde pocket watch releases that fuse the ironclad codes of the Royal Oak with the unapologetic, modular ethos of the 1980s Pop Swatch.

But that was before the furore of store closures which, according to the Guardian, was like a mosh pit, while the BBC reports of utter chaos, with some selling the Royal Pop online in excess of £15,000.

With a retail price between £335 and £350, these timepieces offer an accessible injection of Holy Trinity DNA, driven by a re-engineered, hand-wound Sistem51 movement. Love it or loathe it, this is mechanical watchmaking entirely broken free from its shackles. 

Strap in, and hold tight. The Swatch x Audemars Piguet "Royal Pop" rulebook has just been completely rewritten.

The Collection

Eight vibrant, Swiss-made watches merge one of the most iconic watches in history, the Royal Oak from 1972, with 1980s Swatch Pop art culture. 

These include a direct nod to the original 1986 Pop Swatch, a radical, oversized quartz watch with a modular case that could literally "pop" out of its frame to be clipped onto clothes, bags, or lanyards instead of the wrist. 

The eight pocket watches are outlined as follows:

Huit Blanc

A stark, minimalist white that highlights the iconic octagonal bezel screws in eight completely different, vibrant hues.

Ocho Negro

A stealthy, black-dial variant housed inside a contrasting bright white case for a striking monochrome pop.

Blue Acht

A very '80s, high-energy layout blending an intense light blue palette with sharp lime green accents.

Green Eight

Uniform, nature-inspired variants declined entirely in monochromatic shades of forest and deep green.

Red Eight (Otto Rosso)

Punchy, dual-tone aesthetic pairing a soft, light pink background with cherry-red details.

Orenji Hachi

Sports-centric configuration matching a deep navy blue foundation with contrasting, vivid orange hands and markers.

Lan Ba (Savonnette)

Premium blue execution featuring an integrated, small seconds sub-dial matching the main dial hue.

OTG ROZ (Savonnette)

The most eccentric piece in the lineup, combining a pink case, bright yellow bezel, and turquoise-aqua dial with sharp black accents.

Crafted from matte-finished bioceramic with double sapphire crystals, each model has a 40mm standalone case, measuring 44.2mm inside its modular clip.

A historic, world-first hand-wound execution of the Sistem51 movement, packs a massive 90-hour power reserve.

Two Form Factors: Available in six minimalist two-hand Lépine layouts and a duo of Savonnette iterations with small seconds sundial.

Released in-store on Saturday 16th May 2026, these highly coveted watches are already being flipped on eBay for upwards of £1,500. At the time of writing, one seller is auctioning all 8 pocket watches for more than £18,000

The "1980’s Pop Swatch" Revamp: Shattering the Traditional Integrated Steel Blueprint

Utilising an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring and factory-laser adjustments, this manual-wind Sistem51 movement variant is virtually immune to environmental interferences.

Lépine (6 Models)

This features the winding crown positioned at 12 o'clock. 

Providing an ultra-clean, minimalist presentation displaying hours and minutes across the dial with just two hands. 

Key new models include the stark Huit Blanc, Green Eight, radiant Blue Acht, and the stealth-like Ocho Negro.

Savonnette 

Incorporating two models, this specific format positions the winding crown at 3 o'clock on the case. 

The Savonnette layout introduces a more traditional horological complication, injecting a small seconds sub-dial at the 6 o'clock position. It belongs exclusively to the vibrant Lan Ba and OTG ROZ colourways, where the layout uses black PVD container elements to anchor the movement. 

This choice means the crown orientation acts like a traditional "sidewinder" pocket watch, differentiating these two Savonnette models from their Lépine siblings.

• Power Indicator Barrel: Integrated into the Sistem51 movement barrel drum, when you wind the pocket watch, the visible mainspring compresses; a grey indicator means the case needs winding, while a shift to gold reveals it is running at its full 90-hour power reserve.

Is it pure hype, a Labubu trend, or a horological milestone?

All three, actually. 

Clearly, the Swatch x Audemars Piguet "Royal Pop" is a glorious exercise in subverting expectations. And the marketing machine is in overdrive, which has sent social media into a meltdown. Sure, it’s a genius move. 

Though genuine purists may scream that a plastic pocket watch dilutes the sanctity of Le Brassus, this new collaboration does exactly what a good partnership should. 

Where previous Moonswatch releases like Mission To Neptune in August 2023 and the Blancpain Scuba mashups proved that collectors would line up for affordable Swatch Group icons, this historic, independent pairing takes the high-low trend to new heights.

As seen by the utter crowd trouble outside boutique stores

It democratises an icon without sacrificing its core soul, honouring the lineage of historical Audemars Piguet pocket watch iterations while injecting the vibrant, rebellious energy of 1980s Pop Swatch culture. 

With a modified, hand-wound Sistem51 movement, dual sapphire crystals, and an accessible £335 starting price (compared to the £20,000+ Royal Oak tag), the Swatch x Audemars Piguet "Royal Pop", has done precisely as per the Moonswatch with its lunar Speedmaster nods.

Mission accomplished.
