Vortichron TimeOrb Presents 3D Rotating Hour Display With Luminous Spheres

Mechanical timekeeping reimagined: Utilising a 3D rotating orb visual, limited edition colourways and Miyota 8215 movement, it’s time to deep dive into our review of the Vortichron Timeorb

Summary

  • An emerging Chinese brand with more than twenty years of experience in the watchmaking industry, the initial concept for the modules was produced in March 2024
  • Following their Kickstarter campaign, product design kicked off in July 2024, with the campaign launched one month later.
  • Limited to 500 pieces per colour, this unusual way of timetelling is captivating by way of the luminous spheres that travel across the dial, almost as fast as a Zenith El Primero.
  • Graceful and dynamic, form follows mechanical motion. There is scratch-resistant sapphire glass, exhibition caseback, 50 metres of water resistance and genuine leather strap with quick release bars.
  • Like Blackout Watches Singularity, they take inspiration from the movement of celestial bodies, such as planets, stars, moons, and comets, through space. There are five tones available including green, purple, midnight black, blue and black.

Vacheron Constantin may have coined “the spirit of adventure”

But this is an altogether different voyage of discovery…based on space, the exploration of unorthodox mechanical displays and an expression of time that makes Buzz Aldrin rocking an Omega Speedmaster pale into insignificance.

It’s time to buckle up, as we review the Vortichron TimeOrb

Vortichron - Everything You Need To Know

With two decades of expertise in the game, this dynamic brand is built on passion, innovation and making the unconventional seem conventional. They have two models housed within their Manufacture.

This main collection is based around anodized aluminium hour and dial discs, resulting in a 3D rotating orb design. Here, the flat sweeping hand is replaced by a multi-dimensional reinterpretation of the passage of time.

Representing harmony, completeness and infinite shape, the spheres are a bold statement that is their take on reinventing the wheel. Much like what Beaubleu has created with their instantly recognisable floating seconds hand.

Showcasing a novel approach to mechanical refinery, it pays tribute to the ongoing beat of civilization itself. The wandering hour display is the centerpiece of what they are trying to achieve.

Meanwhile, the Double Roller (pictured below) has a rolling cylindrical hour/minute display, complete with double barrel.

Harking back to mechanical designs of yesteryear, they have blended cutting-edge technology to captivate wearers with a transparent caseback in stainless steel or DLC black coating with double-domed sapphire crystal and a strong Miyota 90S5 movement.

Personality Of The Vortichron TimeOrb

“Our core motivation behind TimeOrb was to break away from conventional flat‑dial watch design. We wanted time to feel alive and visible, not just numbers printed on a static surface.”

Marvin Xu, Founder & Lead Designer, VORTICHRON, talking exclusively to Chrono Hunter

Discovering new possibilities through movement is the mantra behind the specific brand. We are not talking about classic pieces, like a Patek Philippe Calatrava or Longines Spirit Pilot, by any stretch of the imagination.

As Mr. Xu declares, “In TIMEORB, the movement becomes the design.” Composed of 316L stainless steel, this execution is highlighted by three 3D rotating orbs that move with as much visual elegance as one of Roger Federer’s backhands.

“We drew inspiration from ancient astronomical armillary spheres and celestial‑orbit mechanics. We imagined putting a tiny mechanical universe onto the wrist, where hours travel like orbiting planets.”

Marvin Xu

Measuring 41.2mm x 12.3mm, to give you perspective, it is 0.8mm smaller than a Breitling Chronomat B01 Chronograph 42 (AB0158101A1A1) and only 0.3mm thicker than a Rolex Submariner 124060.

There is double-domed sapphire crystal, giving it plenty of visual depth and making it chemical, heat and scratch resistant., with brushed polishing to the flanks.

So is the lack of hands a real issue? Not really, thanks to the simplicity of the time reading with minutes running along the top with the trio of rotating orbs in the centre representing hours.

“I wanted to create a mechanical watch where you can actually see time moving, rather than simply reading it from traditional hands.”

Marvin Xu, Founder & Lead Designer, VORTICHRON

There is a tapering of 20mm-18mm with Swiss Super-Luminova emphasising visibility in all manner of lighting environments. Whether you want to illuminate your wrist experience or light up a Halloween party, this will ensure you have perfect visibility throughout the night.

Supple, durable and stylish, select from a Fluoroelastomer Strap or Milanese Stainless Steel Bracelet, offering comfort and suitability for any special occasion.

Flip the transparent caseback over for a glimpse into the mechanics. Here, you will find details around the periphery with engraved text featuring;

  • Vortichron
  • Limited Edition
  • No. 001/500 (relating to the individually numbered timepiece)
  • 5 ATM
  • AUTOMATIC (As seen on the dial, located at 6)
  • SAPPHIRE

Comforting like a hot chocolate on a cold Winter’s Day, there is a natural fit on the wrist that is sweatproof and water resistant among other elements with durability at its core.

And they have also thought of the sustainability angle, as they are constructed with eco-friendly material, doing their bit for planet preservation.

With everything working in tandem from back to front, and the ingenious way the hour hand rotates, there’s much to appreciate for those looking to buy a watch to scratch that horological itch, at budget-friendly prices.

Miyota 8215 Movement

Housed inside the Vortichron Timeorb sits the Miyota 8215.

This is a reliable automatic mechanical movement manufactured by Miyota, a Japanese company owned by Citizen. It is widely used in affordable and mid-range watches due to its durability, dependable performance, and cost-effectiveness.

Introduced in 1977, the 8215 has earned a strong reputation among enthusiasts and manufacturers. It operates automatically through the movement of the wearer’s wrist, winding the mainspring without the need for a battery.

Ideal as an everyday driver, it supports manual winding, allowing the timepiece to be wound by turning the crown.

Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) there is approximately 42 hours of power reserve. It features 21 jewels, which help reduce friction between moving components and improve long-term reliability.

Rather than traditional hands, the three-dimensional rotating hour and wandering hours display is quite unusual in design, but impactful in execution.

Something you may find on a Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Starwheel. Though the latter is slightly more for a similar complication..at nearly £52,000!

One notable characteristic of the Miyota 8215 is its unidirectional automatic winding system. On balance, it is a practical and proven movement that prioritises reliability, ease of maintenance, and affordability.

Its widespread availability and straightforward construction make it a popular choice for everyday wearers, looking to buy a watch as an affordable alternative to more expensive options. Other watches containing the Miyota 8215 include;

  • Panzera Aquamarine 45
  • AVI-8 Bradley Mountain
  • Timex Marlin
  • Vostok N1 Rocket

What’s Our View?

In recent years, Chinese watchmaking has been catapulted into the limelight. Both Atelier Wen and Ciga design have proven their horological worth, through guilloche, hand tremblage and automaton displays respectively.

Now it's the turn of the Vortichron TimeOrb.

Clean and surprisingly easy to read, it is a magical experience with every flick of the wrist. It is a bold statement on a budget. But some may not like its 18mm thickness. Sapphire crystal gives prolonged durability while the trio of spheres on the dial creates unique visual theatre.

Look, this is not your standard three hander like a TAG Heuer Carrera or SERO Watch Company Signature.

These glowing pods, rotating around a single timepiece, highlights that you don’t have to spend fortunes on top Swiss luxury watch brands to acquire a classic yet contemporary piece of mechanical artistry.

Conclusion

Eye-catching, unconventional and at a wallet-friendly price, if you are looking for an-age old complication that will turn heads, this has a lot going for it.

Think a robust Miyota 8215, 316L stainless steel, 50 metres of water resistance and a limited edition piece. Now there are microbrands out there such as Xeric or ATOWAK which I have covered previously who offer avant garde wandering hour displays

Nevertheless, there is enough going on that merits a second glance. From its scratch-resistant sapphire crystal to Swiss Superluminova, ensuring excellent clarity in low-level conditions, for less than 500 dollars, they have packed in almost everything but the kitchen sink.

So does this sweep you off your feet? In fact, this model may have you in a complete spin…in no time at all.
