17 Special Occasion Watches For Men - Cartier Santos, Panerai Luminor
UPDATED JUNE 2024
So, you’ve been selected by some omnipotent force to prove your worth in the world. It could be through a well oiled speech you’ve practised for days or when you drop to one knee to the person you are obsessed about. It doesn't matter what the occasion is, Timelords. While we may not be Casanova’s or have ever given a TED talk, we know our way around watches pretty damn well.
This is why we’ve decided to end your turmoil about the perfect model for the perfect moment and supply you with our must read guide to help you find the best special occasion model to fit any occasion.Without prolonging your insatiable horological thirst, let us get straight into it and reveal 17 special occasion models for men.
1. For Howling At The Moon - The Mission To Moonshine Gold
Bad break up? No need to worry. Be it with a loved one or toute seule, time to get your jumper and focus on staring at the moon with a piece that certainly knows its way around celestial rocks - The MoonSwatch Mission To Moonshine Gold.
Ok we know. It may seem like a cop-out choice but we can assure you, you wont get a model much better at reaching the stars and beyond than the Bioceramic Moonsmodel Mission To Moonshine Gold as released as a collaboration project with Omega and Smodel.
Controversial but the furore around the launch of the Mission To Moonshine Gold was literally out of this world with many braving the rain on what was the coldest day of the year.
The collection features various ‘missions’, from Jupiter to Saturn and even to dwarf planet Pluto. The collection is heavily inspired by Omega’s Speedmaster collection which all you model nerds will know as the first model to touch the moon.
For a collaboration project on another moon model by Omega could be seen as pushing the limits as they already have the crown as the first brand to hit the moon which is why so many people flock to buy an Omega Speedmaster.
In fact, the model was extremely popular. So popular that there were queues outside boutiques and an implicit threat of rioting the moment they opened. Make sure you buy a model which has this kind of demand!
Omega x Mission To Moonshine Gold, Source - Lifestyle Asia
Enough about controversy! The Mission To Moonshine Gold edition is very deceptive upon first glances. At first, you would assume the model is made out of steel due to the metallic grey colour of the case. In fact, it is crafted from bioceramic which blends ceramic with biosourced material.
Sourced from castor-plant oil, this material isn't really used in the horological industry so to utilise it shows great courage and innovation by Omega and Smodel. Furthemore, due to it not being entirely ceramic, the model is incredibly light and easy on the wrist.
It’s clear to see the fusion of the two brands as this model introduces Bioceramic from Swatch while Omega brings in the Speedmaster design work.
For example, the case is asymmetrical which is identical to the Speedmaster, there is the famed ‘dot over 90’ which originally allowed users to tell if the Speedmaster was pre-professional and the sub dials are constructed in the traditional Speedmaster design of a fidget spinner. Remember them?
The model is full of surprises too. A close look would reveal a hidden ‘S’ which is in the centre of the crystal and a very slight circular ring around the subdials and the outer ring of the model. This gives the appearance that the dial and the sub dials are rising out to meet you which is a bonus for legibility.
It also helps that the indices and chronograph functions are dosed with Superluminova in order to help you spot every detail while perusing the moon in contemplation. The Mission To Moonshine Gold also has a special feature which none of the editions have. These models are only released once a month during full moon dates.
Who knows Timelords, might be best to stand by a boutique when looking at the full moon! The strap is made out of velcro which is comfortable and durable and means the model can be worn with a variety of outfits. We would say to keep it casual however, such as wearing it with a cashmere jumper for those cold nights staring blankly at the moon.
The model has the potential to be valuable due to its unprecedented demand and limited supply. You can buy an Omega Mission To Moonshine Gold at retail for £250 as of June 2024.
2. The Iconic Timepiece - Cartier Santos
Marriage? No. Birthdays? No. The biggest special occasion moment is when you buy a Cartier… Well, we think so anyway!
Cartier Santos - Source - Cartier
The iconic piece that Chrono Hunter firmly stands behind is the Santos De Cartier. Enduring, timeless, elegant…it ticks all the horological boxes. The Santos De Cartier is steeped in history.
Dating back to 1904, it was thanks to the close relationship of modelmaker Louis Cartier and his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian pilot that would result in a highly accurate timepiece for use on the wrist.
This would allow him the capability of quickly reading time without needing to release the controls and delve into his waistcoat to get a pocket model out.
The model has ultimately been extremely effective ever since and could arguably be deemed to be Cartier’s biggest selling model of all time. The classic minimalist design is essential in making the Cartier what it is, as its lack of complications, simplicity and aesthetics refine the model to a tee.
The visible screw effect round the case is enhanced by having both lustrous and matte finishes on the steel, pronouncing the square dial while the rounded lugs make the model more seamless and not as rigid. While the original Cartier had a strap, modern editions now use an integrated bracelet to make the entire model blend in as one coherent piece.
The movement is the calibre 1847 MC which has a 42 hour power reserve and powers the quick set and stop seconds complication. Fearing you’ll buy a model which breaks when near your computer? The movement is protected by a first-rate paramagnetic ring which gives a solid protection of 1,200 gauss. Pretty exceptional for a 100 metre water resistance luxury sports model.
We don't need to tell you how iconic this is. Elite celebrities such as actors Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Cruise all adorn variations of the Cartier Santos, showing how in demand and sought after this model is. You could comfortably pair this with a sea blue jumper to pronounce the steel aesthetic or take it to the office in your white linen shirt.
The model is valuable as its history goes back over 100 years and its elegance is fairly unmatched in the sports casual arena, making it one of the best special occasion modeles for men.
You can buy a Cartier Santos at retail for £6,750 as of June 2024.
3. For Mr Wolf Of Wall Street - Rolex GMT Master II 116710BLNR
Ok, Timelords. Sometimes, model collecting can expand out of just pure, unbridled love for timepieces.
For you hard nosed capitalists, a model which can retain and increase in value is certainly on the agenda.
We thought long and hard about this. While we could’ve referenced the Rolex Daytona which everyone knows will hold its value if you decide to buy a Rolex, we have curated the perfect timepiece for you which is still really well regarded - The Rolex GMT Master II 116710BLNR, otherwise known as The ‘Batman’.
Coming from the first release era of Cerachrom bezels, Rolex released models which had colour imbued in these bezels. This was an incredible feat as although colour had been added to watches in the past on metal bezels, the concept of putting colour into ceramic bezels is a very rare and challenging thing to do.
Rolex GMT-Master II - Source - The Watch Club
Rolex’s creativity in doing this would inevitably lead to their extreme success and nicknames being placed on them. For example, the Hulk is a green bezel Submariner and the ‘Pepsi’ is a blue and red Rolex GMT Master II. Both are highly successful and sell for vastly more than their retail price.
“The Batman” has a typical dual time zone feature of a GMT Master II. Used by pilots in early PAN AM days, you can essentially work out the time back home and the time of the country you are going into without having to constantly adjust your model. Big tick. At 40mm, the model is crafted out of Rolex’s own 904L Oyster Steel which is very durable and anti-corrosive.
You can jump in the bath with this on if you really want or show it off round the pool on vacation.
Furthermore, the model is powered by the COSC certified automatic 3186 calibre and has an accuracy of around -2/+2 per day which is incredibly precise. Sun or moon, you will be able to see the dial as its luminous on the indices and hands.
The date aperture at 3 o'clock is very accessible through the patented cyclops eye which magnifies the date...ideal for those looking to buy a watch for first rate legibility. The Rolex GMT Master II Batman is incredibly valuable as it has been discontinued and it is renowned for its signature blue Cerachrom bezel.
It's versatile due to its steel construction meaning you can pair it with a dressed down T-Shirt and jeans or take it into a business meeting with a grey suit jacket.
You cannot buy a Rolex GMT Master II at retail as it has been discontinued.
4. For Mr Know It All - Panerai Luminor Lab-ID Carbotech™
You fellas know who you are and you know your horology.
Panerai Luminor Lab-ID Carbotech - Source - Revolution Watch
The Panerai Luminor Lab-ID Carbotech is not for the faint hearted if you decide to buy a Panerai. This is a model which can be pulled off with gusto if you are confident enough in your knowledge of watches and the brand. We’ll let you know now…put your trust in Panerai!
Released from the famed halls of Panerai’s Laboratorio di Idee, the model was released at SIHH 2017 and hooked many enthusiasts. The case is crafted from Carbon which isn't the first time they’ve done this. For example in 2015, Panerai released the PAM00616 which also utilised carbon.
Specifically, they use ‘Carbotech’ which is essentially layered carbon fibre which is fused together through the process of heat. This means that the model is incredibly durable, so much so that its properties are deemed to be tougher than titanium which is highly regarded in the horological world.
It is both hypoallergenic and anti-corrosive while it is warmer to the touch in comparison to steel. That's a huge bonus for Brits living in the icy cold UK who are looking to buy a watch! The ‘hurricane’ effect (I’ll patent that phrase), which resembles lines curving across the case, is achieved through its construction.
While we don't know the exact science behind it, all we know is the swirls are unique to every model, making them rarer due to their independent appearance.
The dial is exceptional as it is layered with carbon nanotubes to attain the pitch black aesthetic. The science states that light is simply absorbed then trapped in the dial so there is no reflection whatsoever and the dial itself isn't brightened. Combine this ultra black dial with highly luminescent indices and hands and you have possibly the most legible model in the industry.
Inside the let’s face it colossal 49mm case, the P.3001/C movement resides and is accessible through the exhibition style back. There’s a power reserve present on the caseback and is illuminated which adds a nice touch to its stunning visuals.
Panerai Luminor Lab-ID Carbotech - Source - Element iN Time NYC
The movement is just as beautifully constructed as it doesnt use liquid lubrication like the majority of other models. This liquid lubrication is usually the source of attention when timepieces begin to jam up. To remove it and instead replace bridges and plates with light composites which won't rub together is a genius move, allowing it to last much longer.
We cannot overestimate the sheer size of this beast. As big as King Kong on the wrist, slender arms beware as it can't really be used to slide out from under shirt sleeves.
We recommend going with the aesthetic and keeping things large so wear an oversized jumper to keep things loose. It’s also a positive to know that this model won't immediately lose value over time. In fact, with only 50 pieces released, this limited edition model could make an excellent potential investment over time. Will this Panerai hold its value?
Truth be told, Panerai timepieces aren't particularly known for holding their value very well due to a solid supply not matching the raptures that Rolex or Patek Philippe receive. Don't be dissuaded however Timelords as this model has rarity on its side which means its an excellent contender for your collectability collections.
You can buy a Panerai Luminor Lab-ID Carbotech model at retail for around £44,000 as of June 2024.
5. The Everyday Driver - Omega Seamaster Diver
You didn’t think we’d pull a dive model out of the bag! One for the man with everything to do but not enough time to do it in.
The original Omega Seamaster Diver was released in 1948 and could reach respectable depths of 300m. The Seamaster was then and remains the answer to the everyday wristwatch due to its high durability and precision timekeeping. The bezel is a deep sea blue ceramic which is fitted with white enamel scale for those thinking of taking a plunge into the depths.
The dial is also finished in this same blue colouring and is polished ceramic with waves laser engraved along the dial like a calming ocean. The smallest aesthetics such as the wave design are pretty common when you buy an Omega but are still awesome to see.
Omega Seamaster Diver - Source - Omega
The indexes are rhodium plated and are slightly raised to make them stand out further. As usual, Superluminova is ever present to achieve excellent legibility and the skeleton hands are a nice aesthetic in order to see the indices while they are on top of them.
Connected to a durable stainless steel bracelet, the model has a helium escape valve to release trapped air during decompression phases…ideal if you are taking it for a spot of scuba diving.
As tough as Mike Tyson in his pomp, the Seamaster Diver can be worn when diving into the sea and smart enough to be pulled off in the office under a crisp white shirt.
We wouldn't recommend considering this as your next business venture as its value on the secondary market is less than that of its retail value as it is valued at around £3,300 but this shouldnt put you off as it's still a phenomenal model for banging around with.
You can buy an Omega Seamaster Diver 300m at retail for £5,600 as of June 2024.
6. For The Action Hero - Breitling Endurance Pro
We all know the guy that thinks he’s Bruce Willis in Die Hard. If it's you or you know that guy, buy a Breitling Endurance Pro post haste!
Breitling Endurance Pro - Source - Breitling
The Breitling Endurance Pro is exceptionally light which is perfect for its intended purpose of being the running man's best friend. Built from a Breitlight case which is extremely durable while still being light, it's 3.3 times lighter than titanium and almost six times lighter than steel.
We don’t need David Guetta to know this is made of titanium! Considering we use titanium as a benchmark for lightness here at Chrono Hunter, we can assume it is featherlight to the touch!
Furthermore, Breitlight is non-magnetic, capable of not going freezing cold when it's winter time unlike steel and its hypoallergenic, meaning you won't break out into a cold sweat when donning this bad boy. The material makes up the case, bezel and the lugs showing the dependency Breiling has on it.
We can see why too. It's perfect for the outdoorsy types looking to keep things light and is an ideal model for those looking to buy a watch for speed. Oh yes, and the bright orange will make you pop out while strolling down the street in style.
Adapted for athletes through the pulsometer ring which surrounds the black dial face, it is used to monitor heart rate. The numerals are given an avant garde Arabic design and filled with Superluminova properties. The dial also features three sub dials, the small seconds, 12 hour counter and a 30 minute counter as well as a date aperture between 4 and 5 o'clock.
The Breitling Endurance Pro is powered by a quartz movement, the B82 calibre. Its COSC certified to -4 to +6 seconds per day which is phenomenal in comparison to the standard figures given by other quartz models. Would it really be a tool model without a rubber strap? But we do admire Breitling’s penchant for these types of straps, fixed in with a Breightlight tang type buckle.
Ideally worn for your daily fitness routine or pumping your delts at the gym, let’s be honest, if Iron Man winners Jan Frodeno, Daniela Ryf and Chris McCormack can pull this off, then you should too. Yet if you are looking to make a quick buck, it shouldn't be bought for the express intent of value.
Many Breitling models lose 10%-30% before you strut out of the boutique. Although it's a phenomenal tool model which will certainly last you, our take is don't expect to make a profit on it.
You can buy a Breitling Endurance Pro for £2,850 as of June 2024.
7. For The Show Off - Richard Mille RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley
Mr Ego likes pretty things which shimmer, gleam and hope people notice. That’s why we think he (or you) should buy a Richard Mille RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley.
Richard Mille Smiley - Source - La Cote des Montres
It’s time to get your happy face on time. Admittedly if you have the cajones to pull this off, we salute you. The Richard Mille RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley is as bizarre as it is absolutely incredible… the best combination in our humble opinion!
The model took three years to produce and features the in house calibre CRMT7 which is a skeletonized winding tourbillon movement with hours, minutes and a function indicator. If that wasn't good enough for you, the bridges and baseplate is grade 5 titanium, which is extremely rigid and highly corrosion resistant.
The movement in The Smiley utilises a free spring balance with variable inertia to be extra stable during shocks. The colour is endless as the rotor as seen through the exhibition caseback is in 3N yellow gold. The case itself is crafted from ATZ white ceramic and red gold which is abrasion resistant. This may be the toughest work of art you’ve ever witnessed, Timelords.
Of course, you won't be interested in the movement when the entire model is the equivalent of an acid trip. For example, the main smiley motif is crafted from yellow gold and is micro blasted. There is a pink flamingo which has undergone polishing and its eye is created using the smallest tool in existence.
Just to highlight how bizarre this is, there is a cactus, a pineapple and a multitude of seemingly random objects which all hark to the theme of having a good time. Suffice to say, all the elements in the model have been thoroughly finished to the highest degree.
The model doesn't have to be worn with something extravagant like Pharrel Williams red leather ensemble at The Grammys. You can let it be the centre of attention by wearing solid colours like white or black shirts.
The model is limited to 50 pieces meaning it's incredibly rare and since most of them sell out before they’ve even been released, the model is almost as impossible to see as Bigfoot.
You cannot buy a Richard Mille Smiley at retail as of June 2024.
8. For The Office Executive - Patek Philippe Nautilus 5811/1G
Today’s the day. You must go in and prove your worth to the board and nail that key presentation. If you want make sure you pull it off with aplomb, why not look to buy a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5811/1G.
Patek Philippe Nautilus - Source - Al Arabiya
To those that know their horological history, the Patek Philippe 5711 is immensely popular. Need we mention the Tiffany dial edition which sold for £5.3m in 2021? The 5811/1G represented a comeback of great proportions. Released in 2023, the model is deceptively crafted from white gold as opposed to its stainless steel predecessor.
The dial is given a blue sunburst finish which results in a black graduation to its periphery, allowing the gold applied hour markers to stand out more. Dosed with luminescence, the indices are incredibly visible to the human eye.
This time, the size has increased from 40mm to 41mm and is built in a 2 part case as per the original Nautilus which graced our eyes in 1976. Water resistant to 120 metres, this Nautilus has undergone a few modernizations from the original. For example, it now features a lockable adjustment system and pull-out lever that upgrades the split stem.
The 26-330 S C calibre powers a date in aperture at 3 o'clock and sweep seconds. With a power reserve of 45 hours, the winding rotor is 21K gold and is held steady by a gyromax balance and Spiromax balance spring which ensures stability in the event of shocks.
At a steady 28,800VpH, the calibre is given a Patek Philippe Hallmark Seal to confirm that this is a model that's ready for any horophile! It looks fantastic against the blue of a navy suit shirt and could seal you that big deal!
You can buy a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5811/1G at retail for £60,050 as of June 2024.
9. For Speed Demons - IWC Schaffhausen Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition
Why is he driving so damn fast down those country lanes? The man is a speed demon and as such, needs to buy an IWC that can keep up the pace.
IWC Ingenieur 50th Anniversary AMG - Source - IWC
What better choice than to saddle him with a timepiece that's conceived from a fast timekeeping brand and blisteringly faster Mercedes Benz. The IWC Ingenieur 50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG was specifically created to mark half a decade of the Mercedes Benz’ tuning house. What’s our view? The AMG and the model is certainly worth a toast.
At 44.3mm in a titanium case, the model is already off to a cracking start. Titanium is lighter than steel so the diameter of the model is not hindered by its weight. The devil is in the detail though. Luckily for us, we can see the intricacies through an exhibition back, giving us an insight to the calibre 89361.
As part of the 89000 collection, the movement is self winding and automatic, plus it offers a solid 68 hour power reserve. Combine this with the rapid 28,800VpH, the IWC Ingenieur AMG can match the speed you set your life at. It runs the chronograph functions as well as hour and minute counters which can be seen in a totalizer at 12 o'clock alongside a flyback function.
But is it all just power and no substance? Like its Mercedes Benz influence, the timepiece is as refined as it is speedy. For example, the Cotes de Geneve finish is used on the movement and it represents IWC’s rich history in Swiss watches. A little lightning bolt hand on the small seconds sub dial is another cool effect added by IWC which links to its need for speed.
Yet, don't think this is some jumped up sports timepiece, Timelords. You can easily pull this off with a black tuxedo due to the black calfskin strap that holds the model up nicely. Want to dress it down? How about something simple like a T-shirt and jeans to let the watch do the talking.
Capped at 250 pieces, the timepiece has every chance of also being a good investment due to its rarity and its links with a phenomenal car brand.
Unfortunately, you cannot buy an IWC Ingenieur 50th Anniversary as it's a past collection which has been discontinued since 2017.
10. The ‘Wedding Day’ Watch - Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface Calendar
You’ve finally done it. You’ve popped the question and she’s said yes. The venue is booked, the horse and carriage are waiting. Time to focus on the wrist wear before walking down the aisle! The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface Calendar is the ideal timepiece for every man about to cement himself into married life.
Its history stems from 1931 wherein the model was crafted for British soldiers playing polo. The innovation that followed was a double-sided, rectangular model case that can be turned around to protect the dial. Personally, this would be a phenomenal feat of horological engineering and special occasion fashion statement.
This is especially since it impacted both the sports and casual watch worlds, meaning you can buy a Jaeger-LeCoultre for its impeccable style and then kick back with cocktails in the courtyard!
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso - Source - Jaeger-LeCoultre
Seeing further updates in 2022, the timepiece now has triple calendar functions while keeping its timeless elements like the Dauphine style hands that guide towards the gadroons based around the case. Named the ‘Verso’ and ‘Recto’ for each side, the verso side is finished in a strong blue sunray finish and the recto side is silver and grained.
The functions from the calendar are split between the sides, allowing them all to be centre stage and not cramming them all onto one dial.
The verso dial of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso showcases a day and night indicator which is a cool function to have on such a unique model. Measuring a svelte 29.9mm, its slim diameter matches its thickness too, as it's measured at 11mm meaning there's no fear of catching it on anything.
You have the option of two bracelets which are either leather or made of a bi-material composite. Without a doubt, this timepiece can suit a variety of classy outfits but no more so than your expensive three piece suit or tux for your wedding day, making it another contender for the best special occasion model for men.
And from Watches and Wonders 2023, if you want to get right up to speed with JLC’s lineup, why not look at the new Reverso Tribute Collection, Reverso Tribute Chronograph paying homage to its 1996 compatriot or The Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon. This stunner comes complete with flying tourbillon housed inside a super slim Duoface movement.
You can buy a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duoface Calendar at retail for £12,200 as of June 2024.
11. For Water Enthusiasts - Tudor Pelagos 39
Whether you're diving off your yacht in Bali or taking a dip at your local swimming baths, you need your model to be more than secure in the water. You need it to emanate cool, luxury, panache and of course be on trend.
Tudor Pelagos 39 - Source - Worn and Wound
The Tudor Pelagos 39 fits all those categories. Modernising the way we look at dive timepieces along with its brother, the Tudor Black Bay, the whole idea of dive models is shifting towards the benefit of the modern consumer.
The Tudor Pelagos is thinking forwards by making its pieces smaller and in the most talked about material currently, titanium. You should certainly buy a Tudor Pelagos if you want to keep yourself abreast of the diving world!
Trimming the horological fat away from its 42mm predecessor, The Tudor Pelagos is 39mm and is crafted out of satin-brushed titanium. This allows the model to have a little glimmer when wearing it around the town or when doing breaststrokes in the sea.
It has removed the helium valve and offers 200 metres water resistance instead of its former 300 metre depth. Why would it need the valve if the user won't even touch the bottom of the swimming pool?
The bezel is made from grade 2 titanium and is given a sunray effect to further sell itself as a watch for everyday use. The bezel and dial are coated with SuperLuminova to ensure solid legibility when in periods of darkness.
The flange around the dial is sandblasted to promote the dial's face even further. The dial doesn't need the fanfare. Its classic black which white indices that more than suit the timepiece and the aesthetic it's trying to achieve. The model is also exceptionally built on the inside too. Let us explain.
The COSC certified MT5400 movement works between -2 and +4 seconds per day which is 2 seconds better than the official COSC certification requirements of -4 and +6. Pulsing at 28,800VpH, it lasts for 70 hours meaning you can run this beast into the ground for almost three days.
Supported by a variable inertia balance, anti-magnetic silicon spring and traversal bridge, the movement is stable and won't suffer when knocked. Good job we aren't clumsy, right guys?
Its smaller size is dedicated to the modern user who will not only wear this for deep diving but to show off around the office too. It's a multi-faceted model that has been one of the most in-demand timepieces of 2023. From prancing around the pool to drinks at the swim up bar and frolicking in the ocean, it really is a hot horological property and a trailblazer in the diving sector.
You can buy a Tudor Pelagos at retail for £4,040 as of June 2024.
12. For The High-Speed Spectator - Chopard Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Italian Edition
For our next special occasion watch, we pay tribute to the racing nerd on the sidelines.
However, be assured he will not be watching the world (or Monaco Grand Prix) pass him by. In fact, he will have his smart pad, calculating the pros and cons, average speed, and all the other useless stats that may become beneficial in the future.
Source - Chopard
For a man who sees the world flying by, he needs a timepiece that has a little racing heritage, a soupcon of flex appeal and enough complications to allow him to work out anything! And the Chopard Mille Miglia GTS Chrono will not let you down in a hurry.
Chopard and the famed Mille Miglia race have been speeding along since 1988 when the Sonvilier-based brand became the sponsor and official timekeeper of the event. Representing one of the longest collabs in horological history, the Mille Miglia models have been churned out like freshly made butter since 1989.
Since the Mille Miglia event takes place this year in June, fans have been in a state of disarray as to what kit they should bring with them. Chopard has us covered though thanks to a beautiful special occasion watch, the Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Italian Edition.
This timepiece will be granted to each car crew participating in the 2024 Mille Miglia event, and us spectators will have a chance to enjoy the 100 limited edition collection. However, to catch one you will need to be in Italy as it’s exclusive only to that nation, much like the Tudor Black Bay 58 Inter Milan edition!
Onto the watch itself. Nothing about this timepiece is small or designed to be a subtle flexer for the boardroom. Crafted out of titanium, the 44mm case diameter has a thickness of 14.6mm which is counteracted by the very light material.
Therefore, users have the best of both worlds; a statement timepiece with enough sporting prowess to give Lewis Hamilton a complex, and without it weighing down your hand.
The bead blasted aesthetic allows the technical aspects of the timepiece to be boasted, including the black DLC crown, with steering wheel emblem, and pushers on either side. Furthermore, the tachymetric scale is showcased on the bezel via a black aluminium insert, pertaining to its immense racing legacy, especially since the scale is used to measure distance and speed.
The dial comes in a frosted grey dial attained via galvanic treatment. This has black snailed subcounters at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, as opposed to the classic 3, 6 and 9 o’clock style you’ll see on many panda dial watches like the Rolex Daytona.
These chronograph counters are given red hands for optimal legibility, just like the 1000 Miglia arrow beside the magnified date aperture at 3 o’clock. The baton hour markers are given black Super-Luminova inserts, alongside the arrow shaped hands.
Within the timepiece pulsates the Valjoux 7750 calibre. Running at 28,800VpH, expect a 48 hour power reserve and COSC certification. Not bad if you want to take your new novelty for a spin in your Porsche or around that swanky hotel bar.
You can buy a Chopard Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Italian Edition at retail for around £8,700 as of June 2024.
13. For The Gent Who Likes To Be Different - Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch (Sedna Gold)
We all know this guy. It’s never just a classic black suit a la Daniel Craig.
There’s a neon green pocket-square, a bright yellow neckerchief and the finest pair of snakeskin boots you’ve ever laid your eyes on. For a man who doesn’t know the rules, and would never dare to play by them, it’s best he gets kitted up with a one of the best special occasion watches that deviates from the norm.
Source - Omega
May we suggest the beautifully presented Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch in two-tone Sedna gold and steel.
The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch has its legacy cemented as the first timepiece to land on the Moon back in 1969…on the wrist of Buzz Aldrin. However, for 2024 Omega decided to shake things up by offering a brand new play on the steely beast.
Down to the usual stats, this Omega Speedmaster is not a scary reimagination with crazy proportions. In fact, the original 42mm x 13.2mm with asymmetrical case is a little like Jack Nicholson…as good as it gets. Well, we mean as close as you can get to the typical Speedmaster dimensions anyway.
The lugs are chamfered and reveal polished edges alongside contrasting brushed tops. Circling the dials is a tachymetric scale presented on a ceramic bezel insert. Utilising Ceragold tech, the scale is presented out of Sedna gold.
This is accompanied by complimenting Sedna gold pushers, crown and the rim of the bezel, pertaining to the inherent luxury and sheer indulgence. The duo-material is designed perhaps most present via the classic three link bracelet. Separating steel outer links with a Sedna gold centre, the contrast is definitely a drastic alteration.
Too much for some, but a perfect amount of evolution for Mr Different!
As for the dial, it is given a Sedna shade, allowing the black subdials and grey minute track to clearly stand out. This is alongside the three-dimensional Sedna gold hour markers with lume dots above their tips. The hands are fitted with Superluminova centres, while the second hand has a Luminova filled arrow head.
Residing within is the in-house Calibre 3861 which is Master Chronometer certified and capable of resisting 15,000 gauss of magnetic resistance. This sits alongside a 21,600VpH and a weekend-proof 50 hour power reserve that’ll serve you well across late night cocktail parties or Christmas shindig.
You can buy an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch - Sedna Gold at retail for £17,100 as of June 2024.
14. For The Time Travelling Man - TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT
This man loves a little adventure. He could be found swimming with whale sharks or taking rock samples of the Pyramids only days later.
Boundless energy and excitement is what fuels this man to travel and he needs a best special occasion watch to match his manly demeanour.

So, what to buy a man that will find himself in every situation possible? A hot seller due to its durability and exceptional design, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 GMT is a stalwart in the brand’s lineup.
The Aquaracer developed to be a top alternative to the 2000 series that was promptly discontinued in 2004. The Aquaracer Professional 300 we have before us today is a similar play on the reimagined models from 2021. Of course, there have been a few alterations…
Dropping from 43mm to 42mm in case size, the steel timepieces have slightly thickened to 13.45mm to compensate for the added GMT and date functionality. Capable of reaching 300 metres of water resistance, the timepieces yield this, as per the screw-down crown and solid caseback with diving helmet engraving.
Don’t be fooled for one second though. This may look like an entry-level Hulk with its green fingered allure but you should take this seriously, especially as it’s less than £5,000
Around the dial is a fabulous unidirectional diving rotating bezel. Fitted with a two-tone black and green bezel ceramic insert, this features AM and PM times, with the AM time demonstrated via the black segment and the PM shown via the green section. This works in conjunction with the added light green GMT hand that allows users to read multiple time zones easily.
The dials are available in a rich green shade. For this latest iteration in 2024, TAG Heuer has committed to displaying a more exciting design code on the Aquaracer line. Therefore, they choose a wavy pattern that displays lines in inconsistent thickness and depth.
Across the top is an anti-reflective sapphire crystal that allows for optimal legibility, while allowing the dot and baton hour markers to be fully promoted.
They come in steel with white luminescent centres, alongside the hands. There is a handy date aperture based at 6 o’clock, fitted with a loupe in order to magnify the date function. Powering all of this is the COSC certified TH31-03 movement. Providing a 4Hz alongside an impressive 80 hour power reserve, the watches offer a range of functions for today’s action man.
You can buy a TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300m GMT at retail for £3,650 as of June 2024.
15. For The Open-Hearted Gentleman - Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked 37mm
Manners maketh the man as they say. However, you’ll find this man wears his heart firmly on his sleeve.
One day he could be reciting Baudelaire to his new-found love in France, or raging at his favourite sports team narrowly losing the Champions League. Everything is done with the utmost spirit and passion. Sometimes for better or worse, but always better when choosing one of our best special occasion watches!

For gents who live so openly, he needs a novelty that reflects just how much he is willing to expose…if he feels his heart needs to blare louder than a trumpet. For such a captivating gentleman, we recommend the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked 37mm.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked comes in a 37mm case alongside a 10mm thickness. Slender and oh so flashy, it pertains to the watch being a staple of most formal ensembles, including black tie affairs or Oscar worthy events
Coming in 18K pink gold, the material is an instant eye catcher, offering more warmth than Jack Frost which is down to its icy cool white gold, and a richer take on yellow gold. Its 50 metres of water resistance is not a celebratory mention, but it does tie in with just how avant-garde this timepiece is.
The classic octagonal bezel remains screwed in with 8 hex-screws and the integrated bezel remains firmly connected to the case via the brushed lugs, contrasting well with the polished bezel edge.
For the dial, we are treated to another example of Audemars Piguet’s excellence in terms of skeletonisation. The main plate and bridges are thinned, with all of their excess weight cut in order to let light expose every element of the dial.
Opposing the extremely avant-garde design are the stout, silver baton hour markers and hands with a luminescent centre. If you look closely, you will also see that the minute track is given a high-contrast purple shade, visibly countering the skeletonised dial.
Equally exposed on the dial is the actual movement, the tantalising Calibre 3132. Providing a 21,600VpH, the watches provide a 45 hour power reserve and a total of 38 jewels to help reduce friction in the movement.
You can buy an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked 37mm at retail for £85,200 as of June 2024.
16. For That Special Holiday - Girard-Perregaux Laureato 42mm Pink Gold
You’ve put large sums of money on the line for a deposit. You’ve paid thousands just to enjoy a taste of that first class lifestyle.
Now, the time is near and you haven’t even started to think about your outfits. How about choosing one of our best special occasion watches to take on that ultimate vacation?
Source - Girard-Perregaux
Be it visiting your best friend in Miami or spending time with a loved one in the Seychelles (coconut drink on one hand, watch on the other,) you need something that offers enough power and style points to elevate you past all the other naysayers. After all, you’re not an average traveller... Are you?
The Laureato was released in 1975 as Girard-Perregaux sought to add their imprint on the burgeoning sport-chic watch world. Measuring 42mm x 10.68mm, the Laureato 42mm Pink Gold is crafted out of the matching material and is built into the phenomenal tonneau shaped case that infers the original design of the watches.
Offering 50 metres of water resistance, they are fitted with the famed octagonal bezel which offers a delightful frame to the fresh dial. We particularly admire the polished finish that works so well against the brushed lugs and chamfered case edges.
The dials come in a beautiful sage green shade and are given a clous de Paris motif. This results in an expansive, dot-style that allows the baton, rose gold hour markers and sword shaped hands, filled with luminescence. At 3 o’clock, there is a date function that offers another layer of complication.
And if that’s not enough to clamour favour with this special occasion watch, how about the fantastic GP1800? This provides a 4Hz alongside a 54 hour power reserve, all viewable through the sapphire caseback. Visual theatre at its best, there are exposed Geneva stripes alongside circular stripes and graining on the oscillating rotor and the rest of the calibre.
You can buy a Girard-Perregaux Laureato 42mm Pink Gold at retail for around £46,200 as of June 2024.
17. For That Jam-Packed Weekend - Bell & Ross BR 03 White Steel & Gold
Mr Universal is getting ready to share his proposal at the big meeting. Only hours later, he’ll be pumping weights quicker than Arnold Schwarzenegger, focusing on maximising those glutes and delts.
But what about putting time and effort into finding the best special occasion watch for men? Sure, there may be attending very important meet and greets or jetting off for that beach wedding.
Source - Bell & Ross
But for a man who has so much to do in such a short amount of time, he needs to worry less about what's on his wrist, and get focused on this next hotshot. Introducing the Bell & Ross BR 03 White Steel & Gold.
The BR 03 was released in 2006 as an update to the classic BR 01 series that was released in 2005 as a pilot's instrument timepiece. The BR 03 is the combination of all the worlds from Bell & Ross, including piloting, diving and endlessly stylish worlds.
At 41mm x 9.4mm, the signature squared cases are a timeless representation of the brand. Fitted with brushed corners, this is a high contrast design to the circular rose gold bezel that frames the dial.
The case itself is crafted out of steel, which offers a nice contrast to the luxury metal. Steel represents the durability of the watches, while the precious metal choice allows them to be worn in a variety of circumstances.
The rose gold continues onto the case on the right side of the case via the crown. Capable of 100 metres of water resistance, the watches are tough and can withstand brisk showers alongside a small swim. But don’t dive too deep!
The dials come with a beautiful opaline colour. This allows the Arabic and baton rose gold numerals to clearly stand out, alongside rose gold hands that are given a good coating of Luminova. If you look closely, you may spot the small date aperture between 4 and 5 o’clock.
Within the watches beats the BR-CAL 302. This movement is a top choice for this special occasion timepiece, as it provides a 54-hour power reserve alongside a rapid 28,800VpH (4Hz)
You can buy a Bell & Ross BR 03 White Steel & Gold at retail for £6,000 as of June 2024.
