Central flying tourbillon reimagined: Following the runaway success of the Wormhole, this Swiss brand is back with a duo of new models. Showcasing black lacquer, grade 2 titanium and svelte octagonal case, we deep dive into our review of the Blackout Watches Singularity
Summary
- Originally established in 2006 by former racing driver Fabrice Letellier, infamous for adopting matte-black techniques to some of the most iconic watches from Patek Philippe and Rolex, their focus is on attainability, blending Swiss refinement with Asian components.
- Relaunched in 2022 by Étienne Rousseaux and Tymothy Plubeau, the melange of narrative, watchmaking and independent design language goes hand in hand.
- Designed in association with Black Corner Label, renowned for their unorthodox approach to creating limited edition timepieces, the concept is based around astrophysics, more specifically a wormhole, connecting two far-off regions of spacetime.
- Whereas the Wormhole model had both; a deep black dial (entry) and movement (exit) we are treated to two timepieces. Black Hole has a case and bracelet in PVD-treated grade 2 titanium. The White Hole has grade 2 titanium with a mirror-polished dial.
- Symbolising the end journey of the Wormhole release, and a moment to reflect on gravity and the cosmos, there is a sapphire caseback, new grade 2 titanium bracelet and 37Z0 PTS movement, reworked and fine tuned in their Geneva workshop.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo may have tried to “Defy Gravity” in the hit movie Wicked. But something that’s out of this world that may make you fly high are tourbillon watches.
The sky really is the limit.
Which brings us to a Swiss brand, who you might say are defying the odds in the game. Presenting an affordable approach to showcase this type of complication, two models are launched, following a similar design ethos as the 88 piece limited Wormhole edition.
Taking off faster than an Omega Speedmaster, we could point you initially to our article on best meteorite dials, for an out of this world horological experience.

But for something truly cosmic, beyond the realms of conventional watchmaking, and packed with more scientific theory than a Brian Cox lecture, it’s time to share our review of the Blackout Watches Singularity.
What Is A Central Flying Tourbillon?
A central flying tourbillon is one of watchmaking’s most dramatic expressions of mechanical engineering.
Unlike a conventional tourbillon, which is often positioned at six o’clock or elsewhere on the dial, a central flying tourbillon occupies the visual heart of the watch, turning the regulating mechanism once every sixty seconds.

The term “flying” refers to the tourbillon cage’s construction.
Rather than being supported by a bridge above and below, it is typically cantilevered and supported from one side, creating the impression that it is suspended in mid-air. Combined with a central position, this architecture gives the mechanism an unusually open and theatrical appearance.
Its purpose remains rooted in traditional horology but its complexity is just as intricate. A tourbillon continuously rotates the escapement and balance assembly, historically intended to reduce positional timing errors caused by gravity. In a modern wristwatch, its practical benefits can be debated to a degree.
But its technical complexity and visual appeal remain highly valued. Producing a central flying tourbillon requires exceptional precision, particularly because the mechanism must remain stable while occupying the dial’s focal point. It involves redirecting the internal gear train to work out how to best retransmit the power.
Not many luxury watchmakers (aside from Omega, MB&F or Ciga Design among others) have the ability or horological nous to produce and stabilize a mechanism in these types of watches that is anchored in the middle.

For collectors, it represents more than decoration: it is a showcase of miniature engineering, finishing, and mechanical artistry—an unmistakable statement of Haute Horlogerie, presented in this specific execution.
Personality Of The Blackout Watches Singularity
“With Singularity, we drew a line. From now on, no Blackout piece will be revealed unless it has a story worth telling. XP1 Succeeded because it had one, and we have rebuilt the way we design watches around that conviction.”
Étienne Rousseaux, Co Founder of Blackout Watches, talking exclusively to Chrono Hunter
What one thing should you take away with you from this review? Central flying tourbillon. It takes centre stage, with the cage suspended in air, without any upper bridge to depend on. As hypnotizing as Franz Anton Mesmer, the vortex or trompe l’oeil effect is the deal breaker.

This is the philosophy behind both novelties that are represented. What was seen initially as one novelty by way of the Wormhole has now taken on two separate entities, encapsulating the realities of spacetime.

Measuring 41.5mm x 11.5mm, to give you perspective, it is the same thickness as a Longines Spirit Pilot in stainless steel (L3.809.4.93.6 ) and only 0.5mm bigger than one of the prized collectors items, the Rolex Submariner ref. 126610LN

Weighing approximately 110 grams, this natural progression sees something fit for smarter affairs or as a dressier number, composed of grade 2 titanium.

Stealthy, mean and encompassing a black lacquer dial and black PVD treatment.

Although legibility may be an issue for some wearers due to being unable to be read head on, this does not detract from the intense accent and gradient that’s awe-inspiring.

Akin to the Wormhole with its Musou black dial, absorbing 99.4% of natural light, it is the central flying tourbillon that pulls everything in and highlights the showstopping central focal point.
White Hole - Luminous, Dazzling
As shiny as the Zenith Defy Extreme Glacier, this reflects the luminous side of this series.

Here, the grade 2 titanium is left natural while the light on the side of the case reveals intricate brushing. Don’t forget the mirror-polished dial, captivating light, showcasing the end of this epic passage through time.

Reflecting its surroundings, its appearance changes depending on the light, shifting from bright to dark in an instant…and at what angle it happens to catch.
“Singularity is not a reinvention of Blackout Watches. XP1 Tourbillon speaks to an audience we know well, and it will keep doing exactly that. Singularity is a second string to our bow, for collectors looking for a dress watch like none other with real character.”
Étienne Rousseaux
However, consistency is paramount to both models. There is a mirror-polished octagonal top combined with a vertically brushed base.
Sculpted flanks have been designed with comfort and ergonomics in mind, while the visual architecture has been produced to easily slip under the cuff, whether for boardroom meeting or special occasion.

Lightweight, entrancing and effortlessly stylish, there is a 46mm lug to lug, with a well-proportioned 22mm lug width, and benefits from 50 metres of water resistance.

Two interpretations with one core vision, the two ends of this epic interplanetary voyage form part of this new line.
“Singularity opens a period that will be dense in new releases for us. We wanted to start it with a launch that people remember”
Étienne Rousseaux
Originality plays a part, with the middle enjoying a satin finish which is discreet. The circular bezel has circular brushing. In spite of a lack of markings it has a nice lustre and is aesthetically pleasing, especially if you want to buy a watch of this kind.
There is a rounded crown which is reminiscent of those onion type ones you may normally find on vintage Longines watches.

Enhanced by a great visual depth in both timepieces, the hour and minute markers are mounted on the disk around the floating centrepiece. There is applied Superluminova on the hands, and softened edges that add to the overall visual theatre.

Rounding off is the grade 2 titanium bracelet that has been leveled up from previous versions. Black PVD treated for the Black Hole and natural grade 2 titanium for the White Hole variation. Finishing accentuates each model and is complete with a folding clasp.

There are spring bars, meaning it can be removed without the need for any tools. The lack of micro-adjustment might bother some to an extent.
But we are nitpicking at this stage. Cohesive, classic, with an imposing central aesthetical drama, as Dr Spock said, they have boldly gone where not many (at this price point) have gone before.

37Z0 PTS Movement (Reworked)
Inside the Blackout Watches Singularity beats the 37Z0 PTS movement
Suitable for brands wishing to house a central tourbillon without the extortionate costs involved, they have taken the basis of this specific calibre with additional fine tuning, decorating and testing.
This ensures accuracy and accurate regulation. Modified and made reliable in Switzerland, specialist watchmakers oversee every timepiece, boasting more than fifteen years of expertise.
The objective is simple. To remove any unreliable Asian tourbillons of poor quality, while building a new path; deconstruct the 37Z0 PTS movement to its bare bones in order to be completely reworked, rigorously tested and modified, while eliminating any elements proven to be untrustworthy.
On the caseback we find etched;
- Flying Tourbillon
- Water Resistance 50M
- The Wormhole
- Blackout X Black Corner
And the overall result?
Components are replaced with bespoke parts manufactured in Switzerland. Beating at 4Hz, there is a 38 hour power reserve as well as a daily accuracy of less than 15 seconds with blue screws.
With no obscurity, there is an open sapphire caseback which reveals a striking glimpse of the movement, creating plenty of visual interest.

What’s Our View?
In a new age driven by AI technology, information is being shared in a different way. And so is today’s buyer, entering the market with more knowledge matched with fervent passion. And independent brands like Blackout Watches are benefiting from this upward trend.
Previous releases I have covered, like the XP1 Tourbillon demonstrate they have an attractive value proposition. Especially when you would expect to pay five to ten times the price for a complication of this nature from top Swiss luxury watch brands like Audemars Piguet and Jaeger LeCoultre.
Sure, they don’t have the clout or legacy of an AP or JLC. Regardless, it shows enthusiasts and collectors are doing their homework when it comes to the purchasing decision. The shift is slowly towards brands who deliver quality products, at an attractive price point. This is where they are winning to a degree.
Today’s collector does their research and understands what he wants to buy. Not only is there a central flying tourbillon on display, the Blackout Watches Singularity is more affordable and has a master watchmaker, acting as guarantor, who is certified by 26 major brands from Patek Philippe to Vacheron Constantin.
Plus, this release comes off the back of a sold out Wormhole edition which flew off the shelves in less than two months. At less than £3,000 including a Swiss reworked movement, and high end complication, with a grade 2 titanium case and bracelet,
Conclusion
They have unquestionably broken the mould with this pair of new models, at a time where significant interest is growing among independents and microbrand watches.
Deviating from the norm is a good thing. And it shows they are not a one trick pony, by not sticking to the script of previous executions, that bear resemblance to a certain Richard Mille, as per the FL-One range.
Regardless, it is sensual, cohesive and surprisingly lightweight. Steering away from luxury sports watches, reflected in previous collections, there are many contenders on the scene from Czapek to Parmigiani Fleurier and even Grand Seiko.
But that comes at a cost. What the brand is doing is giving enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy sculptural mastery for a fraction of this. An accessible route if you will, into the higher echelons of watchmaking. And the hybrid strategy for the movements seems to be reaping rewards.
The sensory experience is heightened, where conceptual design meets porthole architecture that draws you in…with each turn of the wrist. You might say, their singular approach to timekeeping is working a treat, while still being unwavering, in this ever changing climate.
