Chinese engineering collides with New York vintage: Incorporating an integrated tantalum bracelet, hand tremblage and two models in rose gold and white gold, it’s time to deep dive into our review of the Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shuò

Summary

Following the Perception ‘Millésime’ 睦 (Mù) with purple dial and Perception V3 series with bamboo green dial, comes another chapter in this specific collection.
Established in 2018 by students Robin Tallendier (former China Horologe association board member) and Wilfried Buiron, Chinese craftsmanship and culture go hand in hand, influenced by heritage and architectural landscape.
Derived from the Chinese character 烁, which is transcribed as radiant or glittering, William Massena from award-winning Massena LAB has jumped on board to deliver his retro-inspired creative design process to both timepieces.
Available in rose gold or white gold, ancient watchmaking techniques combine with a highly respected Girard-Perregaux calibre GP03300, tantalum construction and box sapphire crystal.
Limited to 50 pieces, hand engraving is done by Coralie Mercier. Classic characteristics ingrained in their DNA remain, from pagoda-style case design to Chinese geometric motifs. Known as Huíwén, this symbolises harmony and eternal energy

Geneva Watch Days 2026 may have come and gone. But there’s no denying some tantalisingly good releases. More on that in a second. First, kudos must go to Bvlgari for their collaboration with the “King of Steampunk” Vianney Halter.

The latter has worked with lapis lazuli expert Alexandre Beauregard on the Ulysse model who I interviewed previously.

Then there is a brand who are no stranger to making horological headlines of their own…and for all the right reasons. Atelier Wen.

Showcased at Hôtel Eastwest, less than 4 minutes on foot to Lake Geneva, they teamed up with Massena LAB to launch not one, but two models with a California-style dial stealing the show. The Eagles need not apply.

Who Are Massena LAB?

Occupying a distinctive space in contemporary horology, combining traditional horological ideas with a distinctly experimental and modern perspective, the brand has been on an epic journey since they met Atelier Wen Founders Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron in New York in 2023.

Established in 2018 by William Massena, the LAB represents “laboratory” for their dedication to experiment and embrace new concepts while “collaboration” stands for their close-knit relations with their partners.

They have developed a reputation for creating timepieces that feel both familiar and unexpected, often drawing inspiration from overlooked chapters of watchmaking history. Notable partnerships have included;

What makes Massena LAB particularly compelling is its willingness to challenge convention. Rather than simply reproducing vintage designs, the brand approaches historical references with curiosity.

Reinterpreting them through unusual colours, materials, movements, and proportions, the result is a collection that feels deeply rooted in horological tradition while remaining unmistakably contemporary.

From carefully considered dials to distinctive case designs, each timepiece reflects a strong sense of individuality. They understand that modern collectors increasingly seek watches with personality and a story, rather than simply another luxury timepiece.

They demonstrate that independent watchmaking can be intellectually engaging as well as aesthetically appealing. This has seen them announced as a 2026 GPHG nomination in association with Raúl Pagès

Its projects encourage enthusiasts to look beyond the usual top Swiss luxury watch brands and discover the creativity that exists within smaller, more experimental houses. In an industry often driven by consistency and repetition, Massena LAB stands out for its willingness to explore.

Its watches are not merely timekeepers; they are thoughtful interpretations of horological culture, designed for collectors who value originality, history, and creative expression.

And this is what we find in this specific joint venture.

Personality Of The Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shuò

“With Inflection Shuò, we wanted every detail to have a reason to exist. Solid gold dial, hand-executed tremblage and individually engraved numerals aren’t there for appearance; they represent an extraordinary amount of human skill, time and craftsmanship.”

Now this brand is no stranger to “radiant dials”, worthy of an Emmy.

Take a look back to the beginning of 2026 where I covered their Millésime Perception 漩 (Xuán) with glorious Pietersite stone dial. But this dear friend is next-level finishing. What are we talking about? Well, I have two words…

Hand tremblage.

Arguably one of the most difficult techniques to pull off in the game, this involves skilled artisans, akin to Master Cheng using a burin that involves a gentle hand motion, delivering a myriad of small irregular cuts onto the dial. This leads to a rough texture that disperses light majestically.

This is carefully undertaken by Swiss engraver Coralie Mercier. Vacheron Constantin may be highly skilled in métiers d’art. But one false move and the dial is completely ruined.

Measuring 40mm x 10.2mm it is on point with what many collectors are looking for in terms of ideal case specs.

To give you some perspective, it is the same size as one of the most iconic watches out there, the Rolex Explorer and just 0.2mm wider than a Patek Philippe Cubitus Perpetual Calendar Skeleton ref. 5840P-001 in platinum.

Ergonomic and beautifully curved with no flat planes in sight, you’d be hard pressed to find any faults in the construction of the integrated tantalum bracelet, despite the material being incredibly treacherous to manufacture due to its properties.

As Co-founder of the brand, Robin Tallendier told me previously, it can become “gummy” and virtually impossible to do anything with. Albeit, thanks to 100 metres of water resistance, it does make it suitable for many wearers as the perfect everyday watch.

Moving on to what makes the Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shuò different from previous executions, namely its California dials. Hand engraved by GT Cadrans based in Switzerland, hand tremblage dominates on the base plate, composed of white gold.

The result is as unpredictable as the British climate, producing shimmering effects that are encapsulated in the essence of the model name.

“The dial took us into entirely new territory. Working with solid 18k gold, hand tremblage and individually hand engraved Arabic and Chinese numerals allowed us to push Inflection to a level of artisanal craftsmanship we had never explored before.”

The gold chapter ring enjoys plenty of radial brushing before being positioned over the principal tremblage, finished in either white gold or rose gold, depending on the variant. This does provide a nice contrast.

But what has got many timekeeping tongues wagging is the unique dial layout, featuring the top half engraved in Arabic numerals. This is very much on par with Panerai, while the bottom sector benefits from hand etched Chinese characters at 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 respectively.

The blued Arabic numerals complement the hour, minutes and second hand that are in a similar accent, along with the “ATELIER WEN” brand logo below 12 and “MASSENA” above 6.

This is rounded off with the signature traditional Chinese huiwen pattern, reflected in past Perception and Inflection watches. The bracelet is to be expected with the highest quality, vertical brushing, accompanied with central links that have been mirror-polished.

There’s an on-the-fly micro-adjustment clasp (patent pending) that has quick release spring bars and a telescopic deployment system for simple manoeuvrability.

Other highlights include a lug to lug width of 45mm, double-domed sapphire crystal, as well as a tantalum crown (White Gold variation) and solid rose gold crown (Rose Gold)

One of the most visually attractive, dare we say sparkling releases to date, Needle-mover, game changer, call it what you will. This has raised the bar another few notches, amongst the Swiss elite.

Girard-Perregaux calibre GP03300 (Customised)

Few movements embody the quiet confidence of traditional Swiss watchmaking quite like the Girard-Perregaux calibre GP03300. And it this customised movement that is home to the Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection

It is lauded for its robust architecture, practical automatic winding system and balanced proportions. Its construction reflects Girard-Perregaux’s long-standing philosophy of combining technical functionality with understated elegance.

Rather than pursuing complexity for its own sake, the calibre concentrates on reliability, serviceability and the smooth delivery of power—qualities that have made it a respected workhorse within the manufacturer's modern history.

Light and heavy, a la yin and yang are balanced out on the gorgeous exhibition caseback. This interplay is reflected on previous models which again is a nice symbol of consistency and differentiation.

Adjusted in five positions including for temperature, the sweeping lines encapsulated in the bridges draw inspiration from ancient Chinese paintings representing wind (feng 風). This provides the perfect contrast, marking the difference between the feather-like feeling of wind, and the crushing weight of the principal material used in the bracelet and case…tantalum.

And like Katie Taylor’s last fight at Croke Park, the movement pulls no punches. There are ruthenium-plated bridges that benefit from captivating anglage while the wave-like côtes are laser-etched with radial brushing starting from the middle.

The wind influenced rotor has been seen on previous iterations but here we are presented with a 5N rose gold number with black-polished screws to round off an exquisite glimpse into true technical prowess, at its finest.

Order Process

Bear in mind for a second that there is some horological housekeeping before it is on the wrist.

As they are limited to 50 pieces in total across both rose gold and white gold variants, there is an application process to follow with internal reviews.

Firstly, register your interest above at the direct websites via their forms of interest. After applications have been processed, only those selected will receive the good news they will actually receive one.

There is a 50% initial deposit which must be paid in advance whereby you can choose which version you prefer (subject to availability.) The remaining contribution will be taken post-delivery of the timepiece.

According to their site, orders are set to be fulfilled in January 2027 in small quantities until April 2027. Convoluted it may be but they want them to be placed in the right hands.

What’s Our View?

Building on the OG Inflection collection from 2025, Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron have again stepped up their game…one more time.

Now collabs are not new. And if you get them right as per previous examples I have covered with French Manufacture Pequignet, famed for their Calibre Royale, they can be a roaring success. Just take the Moonswatch for one.

One of the best microbrands out there, it’s taking the best of what the Sino-French brand has to offer, with its deeply ingrained Chinese heritage and architectural influences, not to mention instantly recognisable case shape and complexity, when it comes to machining tantalum.

Add a sprinkling of hand tremblage, solid gold dials, encompassing a Girard Perregaux movement, and you have another recipe for success.

Sure, it may be nearly four times the cost of that prized collectors timepiece, the Rolex Submariner Date ref. 126610LN. Nevertheless, this is independent watchmaking and craftsmanship at its absolute finest.

And there’s no escaping that fact…not for a single second.

Conclusion

So what have we learnt from the Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shuò?

In the first instance, we are treated to a smorgasbord of traditional horological techniques that are nigh on impossible to master. Czapek may skilfully use trompe l'oeil to evoke three dimensional depth in some of their triumphant watches.

But hand tremblage genuinely elevates both art and form with a special textured granular surface across these novelties. The tantalum bracelet is just as effective and exquisite while the finishing is something to behold that you won’t find in a similarly priced Rolex…period.

This is a collector's item bar none, and will no doubt be gone quicker than the Bayeux Tapestry loan. The latter is to be returned to France by September 2027. One thing is for sure. Tallendier and Buiron have certainly conquered the independent scene, and long may it continue.

As they say in theatrical circles, it’s on with the Shuò.
