Earth on your wrist: Levelling up the 2021 GPHG Challenge Watch Prize winner in new variations from steel to titanium, we deep dive into our review of the Ciga design Blue Planet II Atlantic Edition

Summary

  • Merging navigation and the ocean, the brand has pushed boundaries yet again with the latest lineup of iterations, ensuring a voyage of epic discovery
  • Founded in 2016 by industrial and graphic designer Zhang Jianming, they have produced iconic models such as the Hunter Tourbillon and Mount Everest China 65th Anniversary, paying tribute to explorer Liu Lianman
  • Taking inspiration from ancient sundials, the CNC engraved topographic relief dial, depicting the Atlantic Ocean rotates 30 degrees daily, while the surrounding minute ring spins 360 degrees, showcasing hours and minutes as a single pointer.
  • Dial curvature has been increased by 36% and the crystal by 25% on this updated model, enhancing the globe-like architecture. This creates visual drama and conjures more excitement than landing a slot on the Rolex Daytona waitlist.
  • Combining the Earth’s beauty and continual refinement, there is asynchronous-follow movement technology, ergonomic strap, recycled titanium case and a custom-designed caliber CD-04-E.

While David Attenborough celebrated his 100th birthday in 2026, it’s time to focus on a watch brand that’ s doing their bit for the planet…so to speak.

Vacheron Constantin may have coined “the spirit of adventure.” But this award-winning model showcases Earth at its purest, alongside its natural rotation encapsulated in a single compass marker.

Embodying terrain, humanity, unity and the pursuit of unity without conflict, it's time we review the Ciga design Blue Planet II Atlantic Edition

The Blue Planet Collection - Everything You Need To Know

The Ciga design Blue Planet collection reimagines traditional watchmaking with a striking three-dimensional representation of Earth at the centre of the dial.

Combining artistic design with mechanical innovation, these distinctive timepieces appeal to collectors who appreciate unconventional watches and contemporary aesthetics.

The collection's defining feature is its sculpted, rotating globe, which replaces conventional hands with an innovative time-display system. Using the brand's proprietary the rotating elements indicate hours and minutes at a shared reference point.

Asynchronous Follow Movement Technology is at the heart of the concept, involving the minute disk which does a 390 degree rotation every sixty seconds. Meanwhile, the central globe representing hours only turns 30 degrees.

The detailed dial features engraved geographical contours, while a domed sapphire crystal enhances the globe's depth and visual impact.

There are a host of materials to choose from, composed of stainless steel, titanium or ceramic, paired with ceramic or blue rubber straps.

The original Blue Planet achieved international recognition in 2021 by winning the Challenge Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), a significant milestone for the brand.

With subsequent editions introducing different finishes, colours and materials, it continues to explore the relationship between time, technology and the natural world.

In case you can’t decipher between which model, we have outlined below the entire collection in this handy graphic.

Personality Of The Ciga design Blue Planet II Atlantic Edition

On the surface, this is much more than a watch.

It is a symbolic and artistic reinterpretation.

A time to reflect on what civilization has achieved over the past two millennia, including the Silk Road, flora, fauna, the oceans of the world and a freedom for exploration that has seen man go to the moon…wearing an Omega Speedmaster of course!

Geographical references aside, this model has been on a journey all of its own for more than a decade since it was recognised by the Red Dot Design Awards.

I have covered interesting watches before covering maritime led philosophies including ones from British brands including Escudo.

Made from recycled titanium or 316L stainless steel, it has more adventure in it than Phileas Fogg and Jules Verne put together.

Measuring 46mm x 17.05mm, it is the same case diameter as a Panerai Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days (Ref: PAM00422) and 2mm thicker than a Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea (Ref. 136660)

It’s a big boy alright, which is largely due to the sapphire crystal construction. This is both heat resistant and scratch resistant, preventing wear and corrosion.

They have really considered the authenticity of time telling via the asynchronous-follow movement technology that changes traditional gears in favour of simulating Earth’s self-rotation on the dial.

Gaze at the majesty of the Rocky Mountains, Azores and other points of interest on this lug-free model that have been carefully represented, outlining the vast Atlantic Ocean to plunge you deeper than a Rolex Deepsea Challenge.

There is a 46mm lug to lug, recycled titanium case with high gloss polishing and commemorative GPHG inscribed caseback, highlighting the prowess and recognition of this specific collection.

Increased Indices, Larger Lume, Double-Curved Structure

The rounded profile maintains the Earth is on full view and in complete focus as the main attraction. Operation is by way of the globe and internal ring which spin round varying speeds as explained above.

The single pointer marker acts as the way to read time efficiently.

Indices have been expanded more than 100%, resulting in unparalleled levels of visibility while providing practicality and sophistication.

During the evening the luminous markers recreate the shimmering and glistening of the moonlight across the ripples of the water, instilling an emotional reaction of the wearer.

Unfortunately, there are luminous features on the 43mm variation which is something to consider in the decision-making process.

There is a 6mm CNC-grooved crown and sporty, tactile rubber strap with hidden butterfly clasp, giving it a very Richard Mille vibe, for a fraction of the cost.

Meanwhile the double-curved structure connects the dial and case as one, making the mountain peaks and range of Earth, sharper, denser and transparent, illuminating the finest contours and ripples.

Did You Know?

The brand's own Asynchronous-Follow Movement Technology has been officially approved by by the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG)

Calibre CD-04-E

Poetry in motion, the Ciga design Blue Planet II Atlantic Edition is powered by a custom built automatic Calibre CD-04-E. It is Swiss constructed and has at its core the brand’s forward-thinking Asynchronous Follow Movement technology.

Wearers can see this in action via the sapphire exhibition case back, allowing the minute disk to spin 390 degrees every sixty seconds. The main globe on the dial relating to the hours turns just 30 degrees.

Beating at 21,6000vph, there is 40 hours power reserve and a daily accuracy of -15/+30 seconds. This is by no means COSC standards, offered by Breitling or Tudor and although those stats are not much to write home about (literally) it is the visual architecture that must be applauded.

Other points to emphasise include luminescent numerals, on the periphery of the CNC-carved globe ensuring clarity and first rate visibility in low-light conditions.

What’s Our View?

An appealing choice for anyone seeking to buy a watch with originality, technical prowess thanks to the automatic caliber CD-04-E, and an unconventional way of time telling.

Think something like the ATOWAK MANTA-X which I reviewed, having all the hallmarks of distinctive design, and never before seen mechanics. This is not your classic Patek Philippe ref. 5990. Far from it.

Their unrivalled visual architecture puts them in the mix of best microbrands on the market.

And the brand’s storytelling is as intricate as a Charles Dickens novel. Not only have they presented a completely innovative way to present time on the wrist but intertwined the mechanics with an important tale of their own.

Similar to characteristics demonstrated by other major Chinese influenced brands like Atelier Wen, the yin and yang of Mother Nature is captured on the dial in the form of the Atlantic Ocean, reflecting Earth’s beauty and fragility simultaneously. As they put it themselves, this serves;

“as a constant reminder that we are all stewards of our shared home. Blue Planet II is more than a timepiece—it is a powerful symbol of global unity and love, championing the values of peace and encouraging us all to strive for a future beyond conflict, where harmony prevails.”

Whether its planet preservation, environment or paying tribute to the passage of time, the overall value and ethical proposition is one not to take lightly.

Conclusion

Like a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, or Bvlgari Octo Finissimo, it has a certain unmistakable identity to its conceptualisation ever since the original prototype was launched in 2013, winning a Red Dot Design Award

With two sizes, composed of steel and titanium suiting all types of wrists, it is a conversation starter bar none that makes us wonder about the realms of time and space. Much like the Blackout Watches Singularity with its Wormhole schematics.

Although, in my view, it would be nice to see a slimmer execution, say between 37mm-40mm. There is a conservation slash protection theme that is embodied throughout, right down to the gift box, incorporating recycled materials, composed into a book.

Note this is a 2021 GPHG Award Winner, recognised by the creme de la creme of the industry, so this is not to be sniffed at. Neither is its attractive price point. Riding the crest of a wave, the brand continues to write enthralling new chapters of their own story, line by line and page by page.
