The 11 Best Bronze Watches For All Patina And Vintage Lovers - Hublot, Longines, IWC

Welcome back, Timelords! Today, we are running through the best bronze watches for your collection, covering all top luxury brands.

Now this specific material has been around since 1000 BCE, the era of where David became the King of The Ancient Kingdom of Israel and symbolised the beginning of the Iron Age. It was used due to its durability and anti-rust properties, as well as the alloying process being easily controlled. Consequently, this allowed it to be stronger than materials like copper.

However, some say that it is so unique that it can only work with a number of dial styles, as opposed to steel which can be universally used across a variety of colourways. Although it has many pros, they tend to be much more expensive as opposed to their steel counterparts. How so? Ultimately, this is due to them not being used often in the horological industry.

You can’t expect as many to be circulating the market. Hang on a second…Possible investment opportunity? Maybe. But first of all, a few pertinent questions before we reveal our exclusive rundown.

Do Bronze Watches Last A Long Time?

Absolutely. They last a long time because they are extremely durable due to the level of copper and tin within the material. While they may look battered and bruised after a while of you wearing the bronzed models, they actually perform a natural “patina”, essentially changing the colour of the bronze depending on your usage. Don’t worry, this kind of wear and tear is much appreciated within the community!

Why Do People Love Patina?

Patina is so addictive because it shows the ruggedness of the watch and that it's been through a few battles, bumps and grazes. It demonstrates the uniqueness of the timepiece.

As a result of oxidation and through perpetual rubbing, patina allows a watch to be expressive without appearing dirty or covered in grime. Kind of like what Banksy is to art. This gives the watch rarity as it offers a vintage allure, as well as a level of individuality that simply cannot be matched.

Owning a patina style watch is extremely rare as it means it’s yielding over a long period of time. You can buy blackened versions, but nothing quite matches the look of a gorgeous, and entirely original aged look.

Does Patina Add Value To Watches?

To a degree yes as we can expect patina to be a focal point of the vintage watch markets and those looking to purchase a novelty of this manner. In fact, it is known to increase the value of certain pre-owned luxury vintage watches while providing a certain authenticity.

Patina adds to the charm, something that cannot be attained by freshly made models. People desire real patina as it adds a level of rarity to the models as it’s a design that takes years to glean. Be it the dial changes to a tropical brown as seen in rare Daytona references like the Paul Newman 6241 or the cases that have suffered a few blackened marks, these are highly desirable as they are so unorthodox in horology.

This is replicated in the vintage car market where a vehicle in excellent condition with immaculate upholstery and all parts in working order is consistently lapped up by avid collectors.

Is Bronze A Good Material For My Watch?

Bronze is highly ductile, meaning it can be hammered to be exceptionally thin without breaking. While this is typically a pro when it’s being used in wire, it shows how strong it is, even under the most adverse circumstances.

It is typically made up of 88% copper and 12% tin, with the latter having a direct link to being one of the earliest materials known to man. Its rich levels of copper content is a key component as to why these types of watches have such a warm glow. Furthermore, the copper content allows the model to oxidise and eventually darken as they become more and more exposed to the elements.

This eventually results in a spectacular sheen and a vintage aesthetic, typically associated with models that have undergone many years of “wear and tear” on the wrist. Known as “patina”, the oxidation process allows it to change to the user's environment and the lifestyle of the owners.

While it is a highly unique material, it is both softer yet heavier than steel as well as being less corrosion resistant. If you happen to have sensitive skin, it may pose a problem for you. It’s not hypoallergenic which explains why many of their models opt to use a stainless steel caseback in order to promote comfort.

Right then. We’ve run through the pros and cons of bronze watches and how it fares in terms of being worn everyday. Its soft design which allows for patina means these may be best worn for special occasions or smarter dress pieces. That being said, there are a number of luxury pieces that are associated with the dive industry…so like Richard Mille or Jacob & Co, anything is possible!

On that optimistic note, let’s get into the essential guide to the best bronze watches for your collection.

1. Bell & Ross 03-92 Diver White Bronze

Bell & Ross added a new update to their previous Diver White Bronze that was released in 2022 with a bronze case. Fresh off the horological conveyor belt at Watches and Wonders 2023, the new models have since been re-released courtesy of the La-Chaux De Fonds brand.

The classic squared case is still crafted out of bronze that boasts non-ferrous properties due to the lack of iron. This entitles you to an edition that won’t corrode or rust quickly, perfect for a man destined for the seas! Capable of giving a great patina after oxidation, it will look sublime after you wear it for a few enjoyable months.

Offering an impressive 300 metres of water resistance due to the screw in crown and steel caseback, The new Bell & Ross is perfect for the outdoorsman. The dial is pearl white and shines bright against the vintage aesthetics of the material. The hour markers are made up of Super-Luminova covered dots and baton hands.

Powered by the BR-CAL 302, this fantastic movement showcases functions that incorporate hours, minutes, seconds and the date aperture, located between 4 and 5 o'clock. Offering 28,800 VpH and a soft iron cage in order to ward off magnetism, the models offer a modest 38 hours of power reserve.

2. Tudor Black Bay Bronze 43mm

Despite being in Rolex’s shadow, playing the part of the shyer sibling, Tudor are making a name for themselves. Sure, David Beckham may be their first brand ambassador but they have scored on and off the football pitch this year thanks to a host of new models such as the new FXD Chrono Alinghi Red Bull Racing and its black version

And then there is the much talked about Black Bay collection that debuted in 2012. Released during Watches and Wonders 2023, The new Black Bay 54 closely follows its original 7922 diving predecessor and the just-as-new Black Bay 58 originates from the year “1958”, or the first year of Tudors first 200 metres waterproof model. Closely following the Rolex Submariner in design, Tudor have opted for the material to give the collection another taste of greatness.

Measuring 43mm of the beautiful material, they cleverly opted for a bronze coloured PVD-treated steel caseback in order to keep the design seamless, and to retain a hypoallergenic status. Featuring a satin-finish, they have a fantastic shine across the tops of the lugs.

The bezel covers the majority of the case as its unidirectional rotatable bezel is decked out like a mantlepiece on Christmas Day in beautiful bronze. Featuring a 60-minute graduated disc in matte slate grey with anodised aluminium, they lead the way into the fantastic dial face. For us, this smacks of ruggedness with a sprinkling of vintage vibes going on.

The dial face is given a slate grey shade and is slightly domed, allowing for maximum legibility. The dial is again promoted by the domed sapphire crystal which magnifies the hour markers and hands. These are made up of luminous dots and Arabic numerals situated at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock.

If you like a little Tudor history, keep your eyes on the hands to spot the iconic Snowflake shaping of the hour marker that was originally introduced in 1969. The slate grey sheen starts with a grey centre and darkens into a black periphery.

They are capable of offering 200 metres of water resistance with a solid caseback and a screw-down winding crown that’s decorated with a Tudor rose. If you really want bang for your luxury buck, you cannot go wrong given what you are enjoying for the price.

Powered by the MT5601 movement they are COSC certified and deliver a 70 hour power reserve with a guarantee of precision. What an incredible movement! The models are fitted with a black leather strap, meaning this piece would look beautiful alongside a grey suit or black overcoat.

3. Hublot Big Bang Unico Bronze

Hublot is associated with innovation and its strapline “Art of Fusion”. We would hazard to say they are the Miles Davis of the watchmaking game.

Source - Hublot

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

Showcasing brilliant ceramic versions with the new Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph UEFA inspired piece, a similarly new and equally stunning Big Bang Nespresso made from recycled coffee capsules and a Big Bang Neon Yellow, Hublot have opted to turn to bronze for their next great invention.

Oversized for many flexors at 44mm, (were nearly in Panerai territory) the models come in a brilliant blackened aged case. While it patinas on its own accord, they have decided to accelerate the process by releasing a piece that is already given a blackened, vintage hue.

The bezel is similarly given a blackened sheen, presenting a fantastic look in at the sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. They are given a completely skeletonised dial with a matte black shading, in line with the moody feel of the piece. This is no clockwork orange believe you me!

The hour markers are made up of Arabic numerals and circled with baton shaped hands, while the dial boasts a chronograph flyback movement that's entirely visible through the openworked dial.

Capable of reaching 100 metres of water resistance, they are powered by the HUB1280 UNICO manufactured self winding movement. Supported by a column wheel, they boast a weekend-proof power reserve of 72 hours. Try saying that after sipping a Mojito.

Fitted with a brown calfskin leather strap, they suit the gentleman who loves the old school look. This includes a vintage brown leather jacket or a single-breasted suit in a subtle grey hue.

4. Longines Legend Diver Watch

The Longines Legend Diver Watch takes inspiration from the diving models of the Super-Compressor from 1959. Following clean lines and the nautical expertise of the past, the Longines Legend Diver showed its face in 2007.

Crafted into a rounded case with a titanium caseback, Longines go one step further by opting to use a titanium caseback to preserve the hypoallergenic piece, as opposed to classic steel caseback.

Around 12.70mm thick and given a case size of 42mm, the models are bolstered with a screw down caseback and a screw-in crown, ensuring a fantastic 300 metres of water resistance. Plenty for water-skiing, jet-skiing and a spot of windsurfing. They are protected further by a domed scratch resistant sapphire crystal with many layers of anti-reflective coatings.

The flange tilts inwards from the crystal down towards the dial face. The flange features an internal turning diving flange, promoting the diver inspired heritage of the brand. The dial is green and features pink hands and painted Arabic numerals and indexes, ensuring maximum legibility with Super-Luminova.

The Longines models are powered by the L888 movement, a self-winding mechanical movement that runs at a fantastic 25,200VpH and enjoys a power reserve of 72 hours. Running the hours, minutes and seconds, the automatic movement is perfect for the keen businessman who demands accuracy, or the metropolitan gent who has an eye for detail.

Fitted onto a leather strap in a brown colouring and secured with a buckle, pair this below a brown overcoat or astride a white suit shirt.

5. IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Spitfire

The first IWC Pilot’s Watch from IWC was built in 1936 and was originally made for civil aviation. Capable of dealing with temperature fluctuations from -40 to +40 degrees Celsius, the collection has continued to expand, moving from steel to precious metals…and now a brand new material.

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

With a 41mm case, note the wide construction, designed to promote impeccable legibility when sky high in an aircraft. Crafted out of bronze, they are 15.3mm tall and offer around 60 metres of water resistance, as provided by the steel caseback with a spitfire emblem, and screw down crown.

Kitted with a British Racing Green dial that features large Arabic numerals with Super-Luminova, this accent is also the same for the arrow shaped hands that are edged with the mocha material. A date aperture is situated at 3 o’clock, made up of a day and a date.

There is chronograph functionality that is made up of three subdials based at 12, 6 and 9 o’clock. The models are powered by the Calibre 69380 movement which is a real gem as it is made in-house.

Operating at 28,800VpH it has a power reserve of 46 hours meaning it will last for that overseas business trip. Finished with a fantastic Côtes de Genève that isn’t visible through the caseback unfortunately, it’s nice to know how well designed they are, even the parts we cannot see.

The sapphire glass is locked in, in order to prevent displacement in air pressure bringing out the sapphire crystal while in flight. The movement is protected by a soft-iron inner case which offers security against magnetic fields.

Available on a brown calfskin strap, we recommend a soft grey jacket with a navy blue T-shirt in order to keep the suave design looking as effortless as a Cartier Tank

6. Breitling Superocean Automatic 44mm

The Breitling Superocean collection derives from the 1950s and was created for both the professional and military industries, especially those who go diving.

Source - Breitling

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

With a 44mm case size, we feel they are rather bulky, but that’s the price you pay if you want to buy a diving model from this brand! We don’t like the fact they are quite tall at around 50.5mm which may prove cumbersome on the wrist.

Yet, this beautiful Breitling can reach 300 metres of water resistance, as provided by the screw in crown and screw in caseback. The design codes of the Breitling Superocean have remained consistent throughout the heritage of the collection.

Featuring beautifully clean lines, very chunky luminescent indexes and squared off hands and a high contrast dial ring, legibility is the order of the day which many enthusiasts want.

There is a black ceramic insert within the unidirectional, ratcheted bezel that offers a diving scale. The bronze used by Breitling is totally of a special alloy that allows for resistance with corrosion, yet still allows for a fantastic patina. As for the material, this is built into the flange that similarly features a diving scale, while the dial is given a chocolate brown sheen that graduates to black on the periphery.

They are fitted with an equally brown rubber strap that is locked in with a buckle. This can be pulled off when clinking glasses at the beach bar in your swimming trunks or salivating over a 5 star meal in a black suit.

7. Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 3

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 3, is strongly inspired by the MIL-SPEC model that was made for the Armed Forces. The original Fifty Fathoms was originally designed in 1953 and quickly became the first modern dive edition. Hang on a minute. Don’t we know another cheeky number released in the same year?

Remember that the iconic Rolex Submariner was also released during this storied date. Released during Baselworld in 1954, the collection's roots can actually be traced back to 1953 upon the release of the Rolex 6202 Turn-O-Graph. Technically speaking, this is replicated almost every aspect of the Rolex Submariner, except it had 100 metres water resistance as opposed to the Submariner’s 200 metres.

Source - Blancpain

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

It has subsequently been updated to the brand new Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 3. This model follows the design codes of the past with a main focus on optimal legibility. Crafted out of 9K bronze gold, the material constitutes a 50% copper total that allows for the title of “bronze”, as well as materials like silver, palladium and gallium.

Given a resulting pink hue, they cannot patina due to the addition of gold, but it can be worn directly onto the skin, without needing a steel caseback. Secured with a rotating bezel, the inside of the bezel is given a black ceramic insert with a diving scale.

The dial is matte black with a vintage Super-Luminova sheen on the hour markers. There is even a moisture indicator at 6 o’clock, linking to the old school models of the past. Of course, there’s more than meets the keen horological eye.

They are powered by the 1154.P2 movement, offering 300 metres of water resistance and an astonishing 100 hour power reserve. While these are notoriously hard to style due to the challenging complexion of the piece, Blancpain counteracted this by strapping them onto a two-tone NATO strap that’s made from fishing nets recovered from the oceans.

We think you’d look outstanding with this model fitted alongside a grey suit, or a basic white T-shirt and blue jeans for those summer days.

8. Omega Seamaster 300 Bronze Gold

The release of The Omega Seamaster 300 was a monumental moment in the brand's history. Releasing the Seamaster 300 in 1957, they were made in partnership with divers and professionals who operated underwater.

And they had to compete with that collectors favourite, the Speedmaster which was also launched in the same year. Now, more than 60 years later, Omega has sought to completely upgrade the collection with fresh material.

Source - Omega

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

They are crafted out of Omega’s very own bronze alloy, dutifully named “Bronze Gold”. Arriving at 41mm of 9K bronze gold, the material was designed with the idea that this can directly be worn on the skin due to its composition.

As such, it’s made up of 37.5% gold, palladium, and silver alongside copper. The watches shade could be deciphered to rest between their very own Moonshine and Sedna gold alloys due to its pinkish hue. They have the unique capability of leaving a beautiful patina while fighting off corrosion.

The bezel is both rotatable and unidirectional and fitted with a brown ceramic inner bezel ring, showcasing a diving scale that's coated with vintage Super-Luminova. The dial is the same sheen as the case, prompting the recessed hour markers and open numerals to be exceptionally legible, especially since they are dosed with Super-Luminova, alongside the PVD bronze gold hands.

Made up of Arabic numerals based at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, the rest of the hour markers are teeth shaped, pointing into the arrow hands. Is there a Bart Simpson vibe going on here?

The watches are powered by The Calibre 8912 movement. It’s a brilliant movement that is a Certified Master Chronometer, capable of reaching 15,000 gauss and supported by a balanced spring and free sprung balance. Enthusiasts can expect a 60 hour power reserve and a 3.5Hz frequency.

Fitted with a brown leather strap and secured by a 9K bronze gold buckle, the watches look fantastic with a brown peacoat, or black bomber jacket if you find yourself gazing wistfully over the seas of your yacht.

9. TAG Heuer Autavia 42mm

The classic of all classics and a must for any would-be collector.

Could this be the Paul McCartney of luxury watches? The TAG Heuer Autavia collection has been instrumental to the TAG Heuer brand since its inception in 1962. Becoming one of the ultimate collections for racing fiends globally, its heritage runs back to 1963 when TAG Heuer designed the first dash counter for all manner of racing vehicle. The name is made up of AUTomobile and AVIAtion.

Now, the watches have a case size of 42mm and come in a beautiful bronze build. There’s no denying the impact a certain Jack Heuer has had on the industry, especially with this number.

With a lug distance of 21mm and a thickness of 13.53mm, the watches are quite sizable, but that can be expected in order to promote legibility, offer 100 metres of water resistance and the durability expected housed within this legendary collection.

The caseback is made up of grade 2 titanium and is fine-brushed in order to allow the sporty design of the watches to be boasted. The bezel features a black ceramic inlay that runs to “60” graduations.

The watches feature a smokey green dial and an array of printed Arabic numerals that surround the edge of the dial. A date aperture is based at 6 o’clock, while the hands are sword shaped and similarly filled with Super-Luminova.

Powered by an automatic movement that offers a 38 hour power reserve and a 28,800VpH frequency, this Autavia is fitted with a black leather strap and secured with a pin buckle. We think these watches are perfect for a khaki suit or a black cashmere jumper for the winter months.

10. Panerai Submersible Bronzo Blu Abisso

Panerai’s Submersible heritage is about as deep as their water resistance.

Source - Panerai

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

In 1916, Panerai patented a radioactive substance named “Radiomir'', allowing the watches faces to be luminescent even when underwater. By 1949, they went one step further with the new release of the tritium material called Luminor.

The Submersible collection was released in 1998 as an update to the Luminor watch, as well as being a fantastic addition to the explorer world. You Panerai lovers may notice the inspiration from the brand's other collections. Does the bezel look similar to the L’Egiziano, and the cushion case shaping look like the Luminor?

This variation of the Panerai Submersible earns its Bronzo Blu Abisso title by showcasing a bronze 42mm case size and a wonderfully deep blue hue on the dial, named Blu Abisso in Italian, or “Blue Abyss” in English. Perfect summation, guys!

The case with its cushion shaping is brushed, pertaining to the sporty heritage of the piece. The bezel is similarly exceptionally tough and rotates anticlockwise and fitted with a graduated diving scale. Yes, guys. You can utilise this diving scale whatever time zone you are in the world, as the piece offers 300 metres of water resistance, even though the piece has a sapphire caseback.

The dial features luminous hour markers and dots with a date aperture at 3 o’clock and a  minimalist, small seconds sub dial situated at 9 o’clock. Take note of the oversized crown guard at 3 o’clock that's now become a signature element of the collection.

These aren’t watches with no technical skill! In fact, it’s rather the opposite… These  are powered by the automatic mechanical P.900 calibre. Sized at 4.2mm, the movement is supported with 23 jewels and runs at 28,800VpH. The movement is protected by Incabloc anti-shock devices, and it has an excellent power reserve of 3 days which is incredible given the movement is only made up of 171 components.

These watches are fitted onto a calfskin bleu strap, meaning you should keep your outfit similar blue too to accentuate your wrist. Navy suits would be best for formal events, but you can also pull off a black or white shirt as an ensemble.

11. Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special

Released during Baselworld 2018, The Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special is a beautiful beast!

Source - Rolex Forums

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

Sized at 40mm, they are given a classic circular build, prioritising legibility over anything else. That being said, don’t feel like Zenith have been scrimping on style. We must remember that in 2015, Zenith released this model with a 45mm casing. They obviously heard the memo that smaller sizes are in favour! Take note of the classical large conical crown on the right hand side of the case for that brilliant Zenith Pilot heritage.

Sized at 12.95mm thickness and secured with a titanium caseback, the Zenith pieces are rather robust which is perfect for its rugged nature. If you can pull your eyes from the vintage inspired bronze casing, we recommend you look at the black dial.

The hour markers are made up of large white Arabic numerals. They are built in an unusual style as opposed to standard Arabic numerals which may link to the “Extra Special” vibe. We think it’s pretty cool! There is a jolt of colour in the form of the “Extra Special” text above 6 o’clock which comes in an orange glow.

The hands are tapered to points at their ends and are edged with the case material, keeping the design seamless throughout. They are powered by the Elite 679 automatic winding calibre. Offering a 28,800VpH, they also have a 50 hour power reserve which is pretty good, but not quite El Primero status.

Fitted with a black nubuck leather strap, they would look sublime with a navy suit or a grey overcoat. You can no longer buy a Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special at retail as it has been discontinued. You can buy it on the secondary market for upwards of £3,000 as of November 2023.

Conclusion

We’ve finally finished!

We have gone through the best bronze watches for your collection, including brilliant additions such as The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 3 and The diving inspired Longines Legend Diver Watch. There is so much more to cover but we would need the Rolex DeepSea James Cameron to uncover the vast array of models available in this category.

The decision to go with it for each edition was done with the utmost confidence. As a material that was used on ships to sail the seven seas, there are many more watches out there which just missed out on making it onto the list including:

  • IWC Aquatimer Chronograph Special Edition “Darwin” - £9,500 Retail
  • Tudor Black Bay 58 - £4,060 Retail

In terms of the models that are on the list… we are confident we’ve hit the horological nail on the head with some of the best bronze watches you could shake a silicon hairspring at. Take for example The Hublot Big Bang Unico.

Using it in such a storied collection is an extremely bold move from the brand. After all, this is a company that uses colour and vibrancy to prove their weight in the horological world. Need we mention The Big Bang Tourbillon in its futuristic, neon yellow Saxem construction? That being said, it proves that it is an excellent choice because it offers an understated alternative to their eccentric pieces.

You don’t have to be moody to pull the material off. In fact being edgy and having the ability to have that extra patina allure is very in demand! In fact, we would say patina adds value to your watches. Not only does it give them a certain je ne sais quoi but on many occasions, the ageing process will significantly augment value on certain vintage Rolex and other models. It adds to the story of your piece that gives it more history than Moses parting the Red Sea.

On that epic note, let’s leave this list here. The next important question is; just how prepared are you for the Bronze Age? Perhaps we can show you the future horological path ahead full of multiple offers and the best possible prices from a carefully curated list of luxury retailers.

The clock is ticking…
