Chrono Hunter Chooses The Best 007 James Bond Watches Throughout Time

Ah Mr. Bond…we've been expecting you. Have you clocked what this article is about yet?

James Bond’s first film instalment was in 1962, entitled Dr. No, bringing with it one of the most successful franchises of all time. And perhaps one of the most adored and mimicked super-spies to have ever made an impact on popular culture.

And, would you believe it, watches play an integral part in the 007 movies too! Since the first release in 1962, the watches have stemmed from the storied, and ultimately grail-like, Rolex Submariner, a twist to the Rolex Chronograph 6238 in 1969, and evolved to the highly modernised Omega Seamaster 300 Series 007 Edition in the last Bond movie from 2021, No Time To Die

We can certainly say that these watches have certainly earned enough PR and horological kudos from the 007 franchise. In total, The James Bond series has earned in excess of £15.6 billion with upwards of 1.5 billion people having viewed the films. Considering there’s around 8 billion people in the world, we only need another 6.5 billion people on board to make this the world's first completely globally seen movie series!

Unfortunately, it seemed like James Bond saw his final demise in No Time To Die, so while we may be unsure as to whether the franchise will continue, Chrono Hunter can still walk you through the incredible legacy of the spy, and the watches that have made the man behind the Martini.

Without further ado, join us, as this time, we roundup the best James Bond watches to have graced the screen, filled with gadgets, gizmos and enough suspense to make Agatha Christie quake in her boots.

Let’s get into it!

Dr.No (1962) - Rolex Submariner 6538

Synopsis

Sean Connery takes centre stage as James Bond in this breakout 007 movie.

Fighting against the elusive Dr.No, a science genius who’s dead set on ending the U.S space program, Bond travels to Jamaica and after meeting up with Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress), Bond comes face to face with Dr.No in his island headquarters.

Interestingly enough, it's understood that the ref. 6538 was sourced from Sean Connery's very own collection as he was an avid timepiece fan. Originally released in 1955, the watches earned the snappy “James Bond Submariner” nickname due to its associations in the Dr.No film. And if you don’t know your Pussy Galore from your Bart Simpson, don’t have a cow man. Here is an intriguing article you might like to peruse;

Ceasing production in 1959, the ref.  6538 has the ability to patina a tropical brown dial over time while the face has COSC text linking to the precision of the watches. Tropical dials are very much in with avid horophiles. Given an oversized crown, bevelled lugs, signature “Red Triangle” bezel insert and no crown guards, they are fitted onto a leather strap and are highly collectable.

From Russia With Love (1963) - Rolex Submariner 6538

Synopsis

007 (Sean Connery), comes back one year later in 1963 in the second Bond film.

Fighting against the sinister SPECTRE group, he is battling against Russians like Rosa Klebb (Lotte Lenya) and Kronsteen in order to capture a decoding device, the Lektor. They use Tatiana (Daniela Bianchi) to seduce the spy, wherein they are lured to Istanbul and have to try and escape a number of deadly encounters from his enemy.

Watch Type

Sean Connery runs the death defying gauntlet, flexing a Rolex Submariner ref. 6538.

Using the same reference as the previous film, we still don’t see the watch perform any crazy antics as Q hasn’t updated the timepiece (yet!). Instead, we just have to adore the gorgeous gilt dial face with the iconic red triangle on the bezel and the bulbous crown.

Goldfinger (1964) - Rolex Submariner 6538

Synopsis

Cue the lights. Sean Connery is back again as 007 to wreak havoc against gold magnate Auric Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe).

This third 007 film follows Auric Goldfinger’s plan to initiate Operation Grand Slam, a devious scheme Dick Dastardly would be proud of…only this time, James Bond is set on invading Fort Knox and destroying the world economy.

Bond takes centre stage with his upgraded Aston Martin as he plots to stop the plan from taking place. Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman) appears as the pilot of a private jet flying the captive Bond to Goldfinger’s stud farm in Kentucky.

In this instance, the timepiece is affixed to a fabric strap as opposed to the previous leather version. While Pussy Galore is spotted with the GMT-Master 6542, we simply cannot get past the ref. 6538 which is now cemented with the legendary spy.

The dial remains in its beautiful gilt sheen, promoting the combination of both diving and dressy styling

Thunderball (1965) - Breitling Top Time

Synopsis

Sean Connery again encounters the threat of SPECTRE, the evil force that is led by the one-eyed leader, Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi).

Hijacking two warheads from a NATO plane that runs the risk of nuclear destruction, they demand a princely sum of £100 million. Sean Connery is employed to recover the warheads from the Bahamas, all while battling against sharks and the enemy. As expected, James Bond has the difficult task of seducing Largo’s mistress, Domino (Claudine Auger) to earn her trust and help.

Watch Type

Sorry, Rolex. You’ve been sidelined for a modified Breitling Top Time with a chronograph dial!

Source - Daily Mail

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

For this one, Q has come out of the woodwork, leaving the modified cars behind in replacement of a brand new watch, fitted with a Geiger counter. Considering Mr Bond will be moving around nuclear warheads, it makes sense as to why he needs such an instrument.

While the Breitling Top Time does look iconic with its chronograph functionality and barrel shaped case, the Geiger counter adaptation epitomises the start of the spies exploration into watchmaking modification. This film does see a gilt chronograph dial ref. 6538 and a black dial Breitling Navitimer 806, but our interest is much more centred on the prominent Breitling Top Time.

Interestingly enough, the Breitling Top Time watch was originally sold at a Flea Market for £25 and sold for over £100,000 at auction. Crikey!

Casino Royale (1967) - Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 16750

Synopsis

Hold on… Isn’t Casino Royale from 2006? Interestingly enough, it was actually made in 1967 and represented a change of James Bond, from the sleek Sean Connery to the equally charming David Niven. Remember him?!

This wacky spin-off includes James Bond living the retired life and keeping a peaceful existence. However, Bond is recalled after an organisation named SMERSH starts murdering British secret agents. A series of ridiculous events and bumbling characters including Bond’s nephew, Jimmy Bond (Woody Allen), gambler (Peter Sellers) and Le Chiffre (Orson Welles) all total the cast behind this bizarre film.

Watch Type

While we can appreciate the misery the serious James Bond fans went through following this silly remake, the GMT-Master is a great addition to the accessories adorned by Evelyn Tremble (Peter Sellers) who pretends to be James Bond.

Given a black dial and a red and blue bezel pertaining to the “Pepsi” nickname, the ref. 16750 is a great feature to what is in all honesty a mediocre film. Given a date aperture at 3 o’clock and a combination of baton, triangle and dot hour markers, the watch displays an extra hour hand in order to let you read two time zones.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) - Rolex Chronograph Ref. 6238

Synopsis

James Bond evolves again, this time with a fresh 007 actor, George Lazenby.

Partnering with Tracy Di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg), the pair become a lethal force against the rising threat of SPECTRE while fighting it out in the Swiss Alps. SPECTRE leader, Enst Starvro Blofeld (Telly Savalas) is performing perhaps his most devious plan yet…a germ warfare that has the potential to become a massacre.

The Australian 007 mixes and matches his watch throughout the film, originally wearing a ref.  5513, a ref. 6358 with an unscrewed crown and then finally the 6238 reference. Deemed to be a “Pre-Daytona” reference, it was released around 1962-68, has a cream dial and only had a max of around 2,500 watches produced. Not only is it a beautiful chronograph, but it's also extremely rare!

Live And Let Die (1973) - Rolex Submariner 5513

Synopsis

Sean Connery may have been the go-to Bond, (alongside one off George Lazenby and comedic spinner David Niven), but Roger Moore’s introduction in 1973 would also cement him as a key Bond figurehead.

In this particular 007 film, Bond gets on his Sherlock Holmes hat to find out why three of his fellow agents have been murdered, subsequently landing himself as a target to the powerful Kananga (Yaphet Kotto). Nicknamed Mr. Big. Kananga, James Bond had produced a lot of heroin in a plan to become a global threat. As per the other movies, Bond encounters Solitaire played by Jane Seymour, a tarot reader who’s magical powers are essential to the crime mastermind.

However, unlike the previous editions, these watches have been modified by Q and his nerdy team. Now, the black dial watch boasts a saw and a magnet which are essential to Bond’s escape. Produced between 1962 and 1989, the watches feature a 60 minute divers bezel, negate a date function and are an exceptionally minimalist design.

In this film, he is searching for a stolen invention which has the potential to turn the sun into a very dangerous weapon. James Bond encounters the highly threatening and expensive hit-man, Francisco Scaramanga (Christopher Lee). In typical 007 fashion, James Bond works with Mary Goodnight (Britt Ekland) to track down the sinister hit-man to his tropical property. Bond duels with him in a deadly maze.

Watch Type

This 1974 film sees 007 played by Roger Moore adorn a classical Rolex Submariner 5513. Unfortunately, there are no gadgets or hidden upgrades, so us horophiles will simply have to sigh at the sheer beauty of this magnificent piece. Following on from Live And Let Die, the watch remains the same with its no date design and features a matte dial, evolved from the glossy finish. It may not have chronograph functionality, but it’s still a keen timekeeper!

The Living Daylights (1987) - TAG Heuer Professional Night-Dive

Synopsis

Roger Moore has been set aside for The Living Daylights in exchange for Timothy Dalton. Chiselled jaw, thick eyebrows, mean look… check, check and triple check!

Here, 007 is employed to offer assistance to KGB officer Georgi Koskov (Jeroen Krabbé) who is looking to defect during a symphony performance. However, before the big event, Georgi Koskow reveals that there is a new policy by KGB leader, Leonid Pushkin (John Rhys-Davies) in place that requires defectors to be assassinated.

As Bond checks the validity of this policy and performs background checks, he finds that a devious American arms dealer (Joe Don Baker) and a set of Russian assassins, Necros (Andreas Wisniewski) and Kara Milovy (Maryam d’Abo) are in cahoots to perform some sinister activities of their own.

Watch Type

Timothy Dalton took over the role of Bond in 1987, and with it a replacement of the Seiko timepiece in films like A View To Kill, Octopussy, For Your Eyes Only, Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me, for an infinitely more interesting TAG Heuer Professional Night-Dive 980.031.

Seen while Bond is on the roof of a Land Rover, this black PVD coated piece with a fully luminescent dial is perfect for the man who needs optimal legibility in all circumstances. Built within a 36mm case, it's a very somewhat might say rather accessible watch for the super-spy who has it all!

Interestingly, a TAG Heuer is worn by General Pushkin which happens to house a gadget installed. In this scenario, it is the crown which doubles as an alarm pusher, alerting his private security guard.

007 makes the bold decision to step away from his licence to kill in pursuit of pure revenge. His best friend's wife is murdered by a drug baron, Franz Sanchez, causing Mr Bond to seek revenge for this friend.

From there, a DEA pilot, Pam Bouvier (Carey Lowell), flies him to Sanchez’s South American HQ, wherein Bond disguises himself as a hit-man, gets employed and proceeds to kill the drug baron by setting him on fire. Talk about setting the stage ablaze.

Now if you look closely, you will spot that there is another Submariner that is adorned!

The ref. 5513 is worn by his stunt double and can be spotted while Mr Bond is in a tanker truck following a car chase through Mexico. Another famed timepiece given birth across this North American territory is of course the iconic TAG Heuer Carrera

The Carrera title is inspired by the Carrera Panamericana race. This stretched border to border across Mexico in a brutal race featuring all classes of cars.

Unfortunately for you timepiece fiends, this is the last appearance of a Rolex worn by the main man on the silver screen . Another 33 years of no Rolex! Whatever to do…

The franchise has done away with the cheesy Woody Allen and Peter Sellers rendition in favour of a moody Casino Royale performance by the new figure, Daniel Craig

He heads to Madagascar following a licence to kill. James Bond finds a link in the form of Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), the gentleman who finances large terrorist organisations. Le Chiffre attempts to raise funds via a high-stakes poker game, wherein Mr Bond enters and attempts to topple the man’s organisation by beating him at poker.

The case is crafted out of steel and opting for a more prominent blue wave dial, the helium escape valve and date aperture at 3 o’clock add a little more depth to the piece. In addition, it cements the chronometer certified piece as an equally competent dive watch with 300 metres of water resistance.

The watches are powered by the Omega 2500 movement. Throughout the film, these watches are interchanged from a Seamaster Planet Ocean in the opening sequence, to the rest of the film being dominated by the Omega Seamaster 2220.80.00.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Brand Of Watch Does James Bond Wear?

James Bond is not just a man of mystery but a man of various watches. Below is a list of each James Bond actor and their choice of watch:

Why Does Bond Wear Omega?

James Bond and Omega have become inseparable ever since the horological brand joined forces with the iconic franchise in 1995 following the release of Goldeneye.

Furthermore, Omega is an extremely versatile brand, fit for the strenuous activities of a super-spy. Typically housing around 300 metres of water resistance, the Submariner are great dive watches. It’s also a phenomenally accurate piece, as noted through the Master Chronometer certification.

Is Omega Better Than Rolex?

There are a number of similarities between Rolex and Omega. For example, both brands are keen innovators that have heavily influenced horology. Omega, in 2013, released the world's first movement that could repel magnetism past 15,000 gauss. They also introduced their Master Superlative Chronometer status which has an incredible accuracy of around 0/-5 seconds per day.

Rolex are similarly highly influential. Achieving the first ever chronometer achievement for a wristwatch in 1910, the Deepsea joined James Cameron on the side of Trieste submarine on the deepest solo dive of all time in 2012 and now they have the sensational Superlative Chronometer that offers a brilliant -2/+2 seconds per day precision.

However, Rolex is more significant in terms of stature and brand exclusivity. For example, they are a much bigger brand, achieving the status as the number one horological brand, releasing around 1 million watches per year and yielding sales figures that go over £10 billion.

Omega has a total turnover of £2.3 billion and an estimated total of 560,000 watches released per year making it the 3rd biggest watch brand under Cartier in terms of revenue.

While Omega is an excellent brand with phenomenal precision and sensational collections including the Seamaster and the first watch on the moon in 1969, The Speedmaster chronograph, Rolex are the ultimate brand for all manner of devoted horophiles. Considered to be the “made it” watches, everyone wants to own a piece of Hans Wilsdorf history as the ultimate status symbol of wealth, prosperity and prestige.

What Rolex Did James Bond Wear In Dr No?

James Bond wore the Rolex Submariner ref. 6538 in Dr No. Stopped in 1959, the reference gleaned a stunning tropical dial after patina. Boasting an oversized crown and COSC certification, these are prime watches for the start of James Bond’s career!

What Was James Bond's Favorite Watch?

The most commonly worn watches by Roger Moore and Sean Connery are the Submariner in the early James Bond films, and for Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan, they preferred to use the Omega Seamaster.

What Watch Did Bond Wear In Skyfall?

In Skyfall, Mr Bond was saving the world (yet again) with a beautiful Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean in a titanium build. Inherently lighter due to its fresh titanium material, the watches keep things understated with a black dial and equally dark bezel, keeping with the moody sheen of the metallic casing and bracelet.

What Watch Did Sean Connery Wear In Goldfinger?

Sean Connery wore the Rolex Submariner ref. 6538, the exact same watch that was worn in Dr.No and From Russia With Love

Conclusion

Queue the final theme tune, Timelords! James Bond and high quality luxury watches seemingly go hand in hand. As heated as an argument between who’s the best James Bond (the old school Sean Connery or the gritty Daniel Craig), we are conflicted between choosing the best Bond watch, be it Omega, TAG Heuer, Breitling or Rolex
