Mezei Midnight Fumé Limited Edition Showcases Luminous Date Complication

British watchmaking meets everyday wearability. With 50 pieces available, drawing on London’s heritage and classic European aesthetics, it’s time to deep dive into our review of the Mezei Midnight Fumé Limited Edition

Summary

  • Praised for their textured dials, like the Omega Speedmaster, this represents a giant step towards their evolution, now incorporating a luminous date aperture.
  • Established in May 2025 by Sandor Mezei, he has been on the front line in the industry, immersing himself in watch sales, gaining experience and passion for developing luxury timepieces.
  • Originally launched via Kickstarter they don’t have the brand history of Vacheron Constantin or Rolex. But this has not stopped them from introducing debut pieces that are refined, evoking a certain maturity
  • An attention grabber on the wrist, with clean aesthetics, the premium presentation is reflected in the 60 radiating lines that give it plenty of personality, vigour and comfort.
  • Dressed down or up, there is 316L stainless steel, Miyota 9015 movement, open sapphire crystal caseback and 50 metres of water resistance

Storytelling.

It plays an integral part in the watchmaking industry. Like the Rolex Daytona history, or Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, get it right, and you will have something that is enduring, to last the ages.

A bit much like what’s on offer from a London based brand. In a short space of time, like an Omega Seamaster Diver, they have made waves with their no-nonsense approach that depicts simplicity, elegance alongside noticeable standout features…at an affordable price.

What are we talking about? The Mezei Midnight Fumé Limited Edition.

With an ethos based around eye-grabbing timepieces, singular vision and craftsmanship, will this live up to as much expectation as Odysseus returning to Ithaca after a decade of being in the wilderness?

The hour is upon us to find out…

Who Is Mezei Watch Company?

Founded by Sandor Mezei, this British watch brand specialises in premium automatic timepieces that combine timeless design, solid mechanical movements, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Taking cues from London's heritage and classic European aesthetics, the USP of each timepiece lies in their dial striation, benefiting from 60 lines, creating a focal point of interest that catches the light.

The collection includes models with engraved solid casebacks such as the London Smoke (pre-orders starting July 2026), Arctic Blue, and Racing Green, brimming with as much energetic spirit as a vintage TAG Heuer

Each model reflects the brand's commitment to elegance, durability, and everyday wearability.

Powered by trusted Miyota automatic movements, they deliver accurate timekeeping, hand-winding capability, and the traditional appeal of mechanical watchmaking.

Their versatile 40 mm case size makes them ideal for both business attire and casual wear, offering a refined balance of comfort and style at an affordable price point.

Blending heritage-inspired design with modern performance, they deliver excellent value with limited-production models, piquing interest for both collectors and first-time buyers.

Personality Of The Mezei Midnight Fumé Limited Edition

“Regarding design language, I wanted to make something simple, but something that would have the capacity to stand out with its design and especially the deep dial pattern.”

Sandor Mezei, Founder, talking exclusively to Chrono Hunter

As sophisticated as a catwalk at London Fashion Week (minus the expensive price tags!) and almost as intriguing as predicting the next UK heat health alert, there is much to sink our teeth into.

Measuring 40mm x 11mm, in terms of case size, it is just 0.5mm less than a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5990 and 1.2mm thicker than a Longines Master Collection with blue dial (L2.793.4.92.6)

Stepping forward technically from previous models, enthusiasts now have the opportunity to take a step quite literally into the looking glass thanks to its open sapphire crystal caseback. And there’s much to admire here.

Their signature customer designed rotor speaks volumes of the effort the brand has gone to in order to showcase the Miyota 9015 movement. But it’s the other side of the timepiece that takes centre stage with form and function going hand in hand

Whereas the Maroon Fumé edition has a classic "Roulette" date wheel, the Midnight Fumé introduces a new luminous date complication at 6 as well as its textured sunray dial

Similar to the shifting sands of the Sahara Desert, it can move between deep blue and stealth-like black accents. Look, this is not on the level of let’s say the intricate guilloche work seen by brands such as Atelier Wen.

Mind you, it’s ten times the price. However, this is not to detract from what the brand has produced, which is precise, interesting and suitable either as a dress piece or everyday watch.

Composed of 316L stainless steel, you can make a suitable splash with it…well up to 50 metres of water resistance anyway, ideal for light hand washing, gentle rain or parading round the pool.

Besides, if you have it, why not flaunt it?

“Watches are personal. They tell a story and my watches are focusing on the personal storytelling and to create the connection between the timepiece and the owner.”

Sandor Mezei, Founder, Mezei Watches

Design focused with genuine crowd pleasing flex appeal, it’s not trying to be anything it isn’t. The textures pop while there’s thought and meaning behind the timepieces, meaning owning one is that little bit more personal.

After all, owning a watch is not just for Christmas. And like that festive list, you might be checking it at least twice. Full of depth, and with a dial as unpredictable as Donald Trump (in a good way!) we like its honest, yet refined approach to what they have brought to the horological table.

Miyota 9015 Movement

Powering the Mezei Midnight Fumé Limited Edition is the Miyota 9015 movement.

Debuted in 2009, it is considered one of the most trusted and widely respected Japanese automatic movements in the industry, renowned for its precision, durability, and outstanding value.

It is the preferred choice for many luxury microbrands seeking a reliable mechanical movement. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), it has a smooth sweeping seconds hand and exceptional timekeeping performance.

Featuring 24 jewels, automatic and manual winding, hacking seconds, and a 42-hour power reserve, it offers everything watch enthusiasts expect from a modern premium movement. What’s more there is a daily accuracy rating of -10/+30 seconds a day.

So it’s not the chronometer certification you’ll find in certain types of watches like Tudor. But it's ten times less than the price of, say, a Black Bay Pro.

One of the standout features is its slim design, allowing manufacturers to produce elegant, lightweight novelties without compromising mechanical performance. As tough as the Hulk in construction, low maintenance requirements, and proven reliability make it an excellent choice as an everyday driver.

Compared with many high end movements from top Swiss luxury watch brands, the Japanese automatic movement from Miyota provides a nice balance of quality and affordability has made

Whether looking to buy your first one or adding to an existing collection, it offers dependable performance, precision engineering, and timeless appeal.

Other watches containing the Miyota 9015 movement include;

  • Vaer A5 Field Black
  • TW Steel TWA1311
  • Magrette Mona Pacific
  • Tisell 9015 Explorer

What’s Our View?

Whether restrained sophistication or quiet luxury, for less than £500, it is an affordable value for money proposition that’s not to be underestimated. Especially if you are looking to venture down the horological rabbit hole.

Unfussy, consistent with a playful aesthetic, their identity is one of the most distinctive at this level. They haven’t played things safe. And there’s tough competition. Whilst it may be a horological playground for many, brands have to work even harder to stand out.

Tough times lie ahead for independents. Take for example the Sherwood Phileas GMT which I covered previously. Trump tariffs played a role in sadly calling time on this brand. And more recently, Collective Horology issued legal proceedings against the Trump administration, around negative business effects.

However, as a growing UK microbrand, Mezei Watches is slowly earning recognition among collectors and enthusiasts for delivering wallet-friendly value without compromising quality.

Assembled with precision, outlining the UK capital’s architecture and spirit of innovation, coupled with captivating dials (as per their 1st Anniversary Edition), engraved casebacks and distinctive personality makes this almost a no-brainer.

Conclusion

In terms of this execution, despite the fact they are newbies to the industry, they have nearly as much British spirit as England’s 1966 World Cup winners, marking 60 years since their victory at Wembley in 1966.

Nonetheless, the Mezei Midnight Fumé Limited Edition is not an own goal. Far from it.

The textured dial along with radiating lines is a pure pattern of light. Short lugs make it very wearable, while the sparkle gives it a glitzy look that wouldn’t look out of place on an Emmys red carpet

Slim and ergonomic with a good standard of finishing, it’s not looking to impress like a Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 6300G. They are forging their own path subtly and surely, with a quiet confidence of a brand that doesn’t feel like it’s just straight out of the blocks.

Furthermore, with only 50 pieces available, you may have to be as quick as Usain Bolt to land one! They are quickly gaining recognition among enthusiasts and collectors for its attention to detail, thoughtful design, and excellent value in the continually growing microbrand market.

Look, it’s not overdoing it and has plenty of detail, identity and character to entice wearers, in particular that clean dial. But will they last the distance? On closer inspection of this release, they may indeed have the horological staying power…
