Incorporating four colourways, Sellita SW200-1 movement and a full Damascus steel case, it’s time to review the new McQuaide C1 Cosmopolitan Collection.
Summary
- Mechanical credibility, accessible prices, and ancient craftsmanship collide with the launch of this timepiece that follows the Q1 execution, which debuted on Kickstarter in October 2024.
- The only British watch brand dedicated to producing Damascus steel watches, their ethos is on individual expression, a thirst for action, affordable quality and performance.
- With multi-layer dial architecture, applied indices, cushion case a la Panerai and BGW9 for top notch clarity, enthusiasts are treated to four dial declinations (Midnight, Solstice, Evergreen, Sunburst) in colourway gradients, inspired by natural light transitions.
- There’s a slimmer profile and balanced specs that come from the no-date visuals while benefiting from a triple whammy of Swiss engineering, British design, and Damascus Steel artistry.
- With a distinctive personality, every watch is complemented by a one-of-a-kind Damascus steel signature, a certificate of authenticity printed that represents the identical pattern seen on the side profile of your timepiece, according to the serial number.
So this year (so far) we have had an array of unique materials showcased, from full tantalum via the good folks at Atelier Wen. to Ceralume from IWC, launched at Watches and Wonders 2026.
Forget stone dials.
It seems the boundaries are being well and truly pushed. But how about Damascus Steel? That’s precisely the subject of today’s review, incorporating this into their latest release.

As time and nature join forces, we look at the new McQuaide C1 Cosmopolitan Collection. Will this have enough of a steely edge to make it stand out on the independent scene?
McQuaide Watches - Everything You Need To Know
Established in 2023 by Rob McQuaide, although they are a timekeeping fledgling, their Kickstarter campaign, where they introduced their debut model, the Q1, launched in October 2024 and soon gained interest from the community.

Presented in Abyss, Obsidian and Crimson, all models sold out quickly. Perhaps it was something to do with the astonishing 1000 metres (100ATM) of water resistance!

Q1
Listen up for a second. These are professional-grade standards we’re talking about. Not even major divers from top Swiss luxury watch brands come close. Think Omega Seamaster 300M, worn by Prince William or one of the most iconic watches out there…the Rolex Submariner

This combination of technical credibility and visual individuality has helped them gain traction among connoisseurs seeking something different from mainstream Swiss offerings.
In addition, what sets McQuaide apart is its dedication to Damascus Steel, an ancient material known for its flowing, organic patterns with inherently unique design aspects. Think along the lines of chalcedony, utilised in the Zenith Defy Extreme Glacier

Rather than treating it as a purely functional component, the brand elevates this into a defining design element. Each case is inherently unique, ensuring that no two watches are identical—a rarity in an industry often dominated by “form and function”
Personality Of The McQuaide C1 Cosmopolitan Collection
“Our watches begin life in Britain, assembled in the UK, and are inspired by a global mindset…Cosmopolitan means being open to the world, curious, cultured, and confident.”
Founder, Rob McQuaide, talking exclusively to Chrono Hunter
Defined by Mother Nature with a huge sprinkling of British passion, there’s lots to unravel. The Cosmopolitan Collection has been laid down as a series of novelties that transcends culture, exploration and work.
There’s detail, diversity, adaptability and an outward looking attitude at the heart of each one of these models.

Flowing effortlessly between boardroom, beach bar and everything in between, the expression is around an all-encompassing timepiece that will fit into any horological wardrobe.
Besides, it doesn’t matter if that collection has a Patek Philippe Nautilus, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or Vacheron Constantin 222 in it…or something far more affordable. There’s room for all creatures great and small.

Measuring 39mm x 12mm thick, you will be immediately struck by the cushion case that’s been chosen for its elegance and wrist presence.
For perspective, the new McQuaide C1 is 1mm slimmer than one of the most popular Rolex watches around, the Day-Date in platinum, reference 228236, and only 0.3mm thicker than the 2026 Longines HydroCONQUEST 2026 Commonwealth Games (L3.779.4.09.9)

There’s a double-domed sapphire crystal that helps greatly with distortion, while its domed profile also ensures a reduction in glare, allowing you to view the impressive gradient from every possible angle.
That includes the stand out Damascus steel case.
What Are The Benefits Of Damascus Steel?
Renowned for being as tough as one of Donald Trump’s comments on Truth Social, Damascus steel is valued for a mix of performance and aesthetics that few materials can match.
And this is reflected in the McQuaide C1 Cosmopolitan Collection. One of its main benefits is strength combined with flexibility.

Because it’s made by layering different steels together, the final material resists cracking while holding its shape under stress. This makes it durable over long-term use.
Harder layers help maintain sharpness, while the softer layers add toughness, reducing the chance of chipping. That balance is why it has historically been prized for swords and knives.
Corrosion resistance is another advantage—especially in modern Damascus steel, which often uses stainless alloys. This makes it more practical for watch cases.

Visually, Damascus Steel stands out immediately. Its flowing, wave-like patterns are completely unique to each piece due to the forging process. No two items look exactly the same, giving it a strong appeal for people who value individuality and craftsmanship.
Finally, it carries a sense of heritage. The material traces back to ancient metalworking traditions, and even modern versions retain that connection to history while benefiting from improved manufacturing techniques.
In short, Damascus steel offers durability, performance, and one-of-a-kind aesthetics—all in a single material, clearly seen on the McQuaide C1 Cosmopolitan Collection.
The Specs - An Overview
“The Q1 proved there was appetite for Damascus Steel in serious mechanical watches…The C1 proves we’re not a one-model brand. It’s slimmer, more expressive, but every bit as robust in philosophy. We’re building something enduring.”
Rob McQuaide, Founder
We are big fans of the clawed second hand that is derived from the Q1 design, establishing the true roots of the brand’s design philosophy.

Another detail that should be highlighted is the coloured second hand tip. This complements each of the four dial hues, creating a real synergy with each timepiece.

With sophistication in mind, other horological highlights worthy of mention include polished finishes, 46mm lug to lug and premium-grade BGW9 Super-LumiNova.
This emanates an icy-blue glow and tremendous clarity, whether navigating your last minute business flight or late-night rendezvous.
The Dials
We are treated to four colourways that give added legibility and depth.
Midnight

Imposing, classic and bold, this gradient dial offers refinement, versatility and is the epitome of quiet elegance. It is an expression of those after hours thoughts when time stands still and can be dressed down for that casual dinner or up for any special occasion
Sunburst

This yellow dial is defined as the moment when one embraces the sun, capturing the moment when the clouds disperse, and the glorious rays emerge.
As radiant as Dwayne Johnson strutting the red carpet at the Emmys (or rocking a near £2.5 million Jacob & Co. Billionaire III at the 2026 Met Gala), it is a warm and glowing bolt of energy that will make you look on the bright side.
Solstice

A representation of major milestones during the year, with the emphasis on a biannual scale, this ravishing red dial is a tribute to the passage of time.
The imposing accent is as daring as it is a symbol of cycles across centuries. Think autumnal changes and blazing sunsets, capturing moments in time.
Evergreen

Resilient, balanced and bringing a sense of renewal, this green dial is the portrayal of when time and nature come together.
The deep rich tones encapsulated within this model provide refinement and the ability to wear it with pride from dusk till dawn seamlessly.
Its rich accent is a sleek backdrop, against the detailed patterns of the solid Damascus steel case.
“In a digital world, mechanical timekeeping feels human. The sweep of a second hand is a reminder is time is continuous, not ticking in isolated jumps”
Rob McQuaide, Founder, McQuaide Watches
Whilst the dials will suit a variety of wearers, as owner Rob McQuaide puts it, ““Damascus Steel isn’t just visually distinctive, it’s structurally robust,”
As rugged as Gerard Butler in Sparta, it’s more “This is McQuaide” for the new Cosmopolitan Collection, blending durability, strength and slim proportions, that’s more than suitable for the everyday wearer.

Did You Know?
Forging Damascus Steel dates back to India more than 2,000 years ago, where it was known as wootz steel.
Sellita SW200-1 Movement
Found in the original Q1, this new McQuaide C1 is home to Sellita SW200-1.
Sure, it doesn’t quite have the story of a Zenith El Primero movement nor a Grand Seiko 9S Calibre. But it has quietly become one of the most important movements in modern Swiss watchmaking.
Not because it reinvents horology, but it reinforces it.
In an era where exclusivity is often manufactured through artificial scarcity, the SW200-1 stands for something more grounded: reliability, accessibility, and industrial competence.
At its core, expect a familiar architecture with a close association to the blueprint of the ETA 2824, a movement long regarded as a workhorse of the industry. The tooth profile on gears gives a significant fall in long term wear and tear.
But to dismiss the SW200-1 as merely derivative misses the point. Sellita stepped in when supply chains tightened and demand for dependable automatic movements remained high.
Respected but not underestimated, it represents a shift in power. Brands are no longer entirely dependent on a single supplier, and that diversification has allowed smaller and mid-sized microbrands to thrive.

Without sacrificing mechanical credibility, some critics may argue that it lacks romance. There are no elaborate finishing techniques or groundbreaking complications here. But perhaps that’s precisely its appeal.
As honest as a judge, it is serviceable and as tough as the Hulk, with plenty of mechanical muscle, keeping watches ticking accurately day after day. For us, in a landscape often driven by hype, the SW200-1 reminds us that substance still matters
Notable timepieces containing this specific movement include;
- Vero SW-SS
- Rebel Aquafin Diver
- Durer Xanadu
- Oris Aquis Date

Assembly takes place in May 2026 with fulfillment towards the end of this month and early June.
What’s Our View?
Born, produced and cared for in Berkshire, this novelty is a pure celebration of not only the art of Damascus Steel but a multipurpose and versatile watch.
Yes, we can talk about affordable luxury, but that’s a given, thanks to its sub £1,000 price point. There are lots of visual theatre coming from the cushion case and wavy patterns from that mesmerising Damascus Steel construction.
Furthermore, there’s plenty of real estate on the dial that’s lumed up to the max, dedicated to the Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9, arrow-tipped second hand, sword-shaped hour/minute hands and obelisk style markers.
The fumé effect is ever present across all four declinations, and while stone and lacquered dials may be de rigour, this is far from a mish mash of techniques and Frankenstein type elements.
It elevates the luxury sports watch with aplomb, delivering a coherent package that, albeit classic in design, has a very cool twist to it. Consequently, that helps it stand out more from what is a jam-packed sector of independent brands.
Conclusion
Sophisticated yet sleek at a fraction of the cost compared to standard dress watches, the McQuaide C1 Cosmopolitan Collection is in our humble view, an affordable alternative to some of the big hitters in this category.
Incorporating a cushion case, it certainly has a Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points vibe to it, especially with the four similar colourways, representing the spirit of adventure and exploration.
Look, there are some brands that have played with their chosen material, as per the limited edition Franck Muller Vanguard Damascus Steel, showcased to me by their CEO Nicholas Rudaz. Launched in 2024, this was a shade over £41,000.
Fret not, though. This is nowhere near that mark.
On a high level, this new number is ideal for many entry-level enthusiasts looking to get into the world of collecting watches. Mind you, it won’t necessarily need nerves of steel to fall into the rabbit hole with this.
