We’re back, Timelords! A fresh new year has emerged and Santa’s sack has long gone up the chimney for another 12 months. Oh woe betide. But don’t despair as we have a horological sackful of incredible treats, latest natterings and hottest gossip to keep you on your toes on our Chronicles page.

And what better way to kick off awards season with the Golden Globes 2024. This year's event was particularly tense after 2023’s riveting, blockbuster spectacle between Barbie and Oppenheimer. In fact the term Barbenheimer broke the internet quicker than Daniel Craig’s never before seen Speedmaster white dial.

We would be terribly remiss if we didn’t cast our eyes over the other phenomenal films that stole the public's hearts. From films like Wonka featuring Timothée Chalamet or William Dafoe’s role in Poor Things, we were well and truly swamped with some of the best movies and TV productions you could throw money at.

Now, 2024 is upon us and with it a whole new range of content and films that will undoubtedly be released. We’ve got films like Mean Girls and Argylle producing hotly anticipated watches, to TV shows like True Detective and Expats.

The Golden Globes is the benchmark for everyone to see what’s succeeding and what is pulling in the audience ratings. For us horophiles, we were too concerned with the luxury wristwear of the attendees to worry about the victors!

1. Timothée Chalamet

Timothée Chalamet already has three Golden Globes under his belt. Unfortunately for his latest performance in Wonka, he was only runner up for the Best Male Actor in a film, musical or comedy, losing out to Paul Giamatti’s role in The Holdovers. More on his sexy Chopard later.

Sure, he may not have been the victor, but he’s already winning the horological battle with a gorgeous grail, we simply had to write about first. The Cartier Crash CRHPI00654.

The Crash’s history is perhaps one of the most ambiguous in modern horology. Originally released in 1967, there are theories behind the lucid, melting style design of the case and dial.

Some say that the watch was inspired by Salvador Dali’s incredible “The Persistence of Memory” artwork, while others say it came from a terrible car crash wherein someone associated with Cartier wore a Maxi Oval and it physically melted due to the flames.

Most likely was that it was born from the Maxi Oval, but inspired by the psychedelic, cosmic like era of the 1960s, where ambiguous fashion and surreal art was all the rage.

In this instance, the HPI00564 continues on the stunning liquified effect of its predecessors. The 38.45mm by 25.5mm casing is crafted out of white gold and has 149 brilliant cut diamonds built into it, alongside the classic beaded crown that's fitted with one brilliant cut diamond.

Totalling around 2.15 carats, the bracelet is another stunning addition, totalling 321 brilliant cut diamonds that totals 2.12 carats. The dial is given a silver opaline aesthetic with a gorgeous sunray effect. The sword shaped hands are blued with the Roman Numeral hour markers stretched to suit the stretched case shape. Worn by the likes of Kanye West and Tyler the Creator, the celebs are drawn to this piece like luxury loving moths!

Capped at 67 pieces, Timothée Chalamet is most definitely living in a world of pure imagination. By bringing out this sought after beauty, it goes to show that size doesn't always matter, especially when it’s such a gorgeous timepiece alongside a sparkling black ensemble.

2. Kieran Culkin

That’s right, there’s no point in staying Home Alone with this next timepiece. Besides, it would be a crying shame if no one saw this if it was under lock and key in a safe.

Younger bro of Macauley, Kieran Culkin finally received a Golden Globe for Best Male Actor In A TV Series for Succession. It was long overdue as he was nominated 4 times previously, running as far back as 2003 for his role in Igby Goes Down.

For such an eclectic actor and sibling to Kevin McCallister, one of the most iconic child film characters of the 90s, he certainly knows how to celebrate in style.

Tied in with F1 racers like Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson, the collection is the ultimate line for the motorcar lover. The glassbox element links into the magnified effect from the crystal. Kieran Culkin goes for the modern 39mm TAG Heuer Carrera Automatic Chronograph. Taking inspiration from the reverse Panda 2447 NS, the iconic glassbox design is maintained, but with a very cool twist.

The black dial showcases a tri-compax style, meaning that the sub dials are silver instead of black, deviating from the classic white dial background and black sub-dials. 4. Barry Keoghan

Joining the ranks of Irish actors with Cillian Murphy, Barry Keoghan has swiftly risen up the ranks to become a very prominent part of Hollywood's scene. Starting from humble beginnings, he has become an established actor, starting with rolex in Between The Canals in 2011 to his latest role as Oliver Quick in Saltburn.

For his performance in the Saltburn film, he reached the nomination stage for Best Male Actor In A Film - Drama. However, he has a string of other awards such as;

Irish Film & Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (2018)
London Film Critics Circle award for The Best Supporting Actor For The Banshees of Inisherin.

Keoghan made the brave decision to keep with the rubies and wear this with an all red Louis Vuitton suit with a white shirt. Confident? He may have merged with the red carpet but the checkerboard style trousers are just as flamboyant as the timepiece. 5. Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling played a sterling role in The Barbie film as Ken, the sidechick to Barbie’s empowered lifestyle.

As he seeks to find his role and position in this film, he put up enough of a performance to warrant being nominated for Best Supporting Male Actor In A Film, but just missed out by a whisker to Robert Downey Jr for Oppenheimer. Darn that Iron Man.

Let’s be honest, he has enough gold in his cabinet already. Winning a Golden Globe in 2017 for Best Actor In A Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy for La La Land, he’s also won:

Hey, that’s the guy from The Office! Actually, he was here as a supporting husband as opposed to a supporting actor, following his wife Emily Blunt around for her nomination as Kitty in Oppenheimer.

He may not have been up for any awards, but that didn’t stop him tearing the house down with a deeply attractive IWC. Mind you, it’s a tough call as we don’t know who is stealing the show in this image…Emily Blunt or Krasinki’s timepiece.

Coming in at 40.4mm, the watches are crafted out of steel. Keeping the same rounded shape, the 12.3mm tall pieces are fantastic for connoisseurs, but not great for underwater explorers thanks to its mere 30 metres of water resistance.

The dial has a delightful salmony shade going on that allows the silvered Arabic hour markers and tapered hands to very clearly stand out. Fitted with small hacking seconds, the watch physically is a beautiful piece.

Technically, it still keeps its excellence. Featuring The IWC 82200 calibre, the Portugieser has a 60 hour power reserve, a 28,800VpH and a stunning Côtes de Genève architecture which you can admire through the sapphire caseback.

Fitted onto a black alligator leather strap, Krasinki thought it was necessary to go all out and match Keoghan with a sumptuous red suit. And we can’t blame him!

7. Robert Downey Jr

Few actors can lay claim to a film heritage quite like Robert Downey Jr.

To put this into context, he is the proud owner of four Golden Globe awards, running from 1994 for his Special Achievement Award for Ensemble in Short Cuts, to his recent victory in Oppenheimer as The Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture.

If we got into all his awards, we might be here for a long time! Aside from this year's success at The Golden Globes 2024, Robert Downey Jr was suited and booted for the stage with a very special companion…from JLC.

Released in 1931, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso collection was released in order to help British soldiers stationed out in India. During play, they continually shattered the crystals on their watches when they played Polo, so the Reverso was released as a solution. This latest Reverso Chronograph Q389257J was released in 2023. Sized at 49.4mm by 29.9mm, the watches are crafted out of pink gold. Given a thickness of 11.14mm, they are exceptionally slender, perfect for slipping under shirt cuffs.

The “recto” or the front dial is given a black opaline face with appliqued hour markers in the same pink gold as the case. Meanwhile, the verso side is skeletonised, similarly showing appliqued hour markers, alongside a host of functions including a 30-minute counter and chronograph functionality.

They are powered by a manual winding movement, offering 28,800VpH and a 52 hour power reserve. This enhances the sword shaped hour markers, tapered hands and pearl style minute track, all of which are in the same rose gold sheen. And how exactly does a retrograde function work I hear you ask? Essentially, it relates to the arrowed hand not completing an entire spin of the dial, instead jumping back to the start of the arc once it reaches its desired date. Then, the cycle repeats!

This is serious flex appeal and then some. Rocking a Rolex “Starbucks” Submariner at the Golden Globes 2024, the presenter of this prestigious ceremony really made us enthusiasts go green with envy…especially the bezel.

The Aerospace was originally launched in 1985 and subsequently followed by the Aerospace Evo line. Crafted out of titanium and sized at 43mm, the timepieces are rather big lengthwise, but quite slim at 10.8mm.

The dial is made up of digital day and date counters which are programmed 4 years in advance, as well as a countdown timer, second time zone, an alarm and a minute repeater. It’s a good job the counters are programmed for 4 years as the SuperQuartz movement which typically lasts around 3 to 4 years anyway.

Water resistant to 100 metres, this chronometer certified SuperQuartz calibre is easy to use once you decipher what each analog display means. Offering 1/100th of a second accuracy, don’t sleep on this industrial looking piece!

Fitted onto a titanium strap, Ford wears this with a classic black suit, black bow tie and white shirt. Classic!
