Richard Mille Waiting List Explained - Chrono Hunter

Dripping in luxury with a celebrity list that would cause a traffic jam on the red carpet, Richard Mille has been an opulent brand disruptor in only a little over two decades.

Launched in 2001, they have gone on to become a significant baller in the horological world. The Lebron James of timepieces we might say. Featuring avant-garde designs with exceptional materials, their watches can be adorned for all manner of special occasions or paired with a simple white tee. They are that blingy. And of course, those extraordinary waiting lists and wait times. More on that in a minute.

Be it sporty or stylish, just how influential are they in the sector? For starters, below are just a few key facts that have cemented Richard Mille as one of the ultimate watch brands:

  • The RM UP-01 Ferrari is the world's thinnest watch at 1.75mm
  • The RM 27-01 Rafael Nadal Tourbillon weighs 18.83 grams  - The world's lightest tourbillon
  • The RM 50-03 McLaren F1 is the world's lightest flyback chronograph
  • The RM 031 beats at a frequency of 36,000 VpH which offers accuracy close to 30 seconds per month
  • The RM 27-03 Tourbillon withstands 10,000G.
  • The RM 006 was worn by Felipe Massa in the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, he crashed and the watch suffered no damage.

So, are you looking to buy a Richard Mille packed full with unbridled sporting spirit like the RM 67-02. Perhaps you are searching for a model that can suit your classy high net-worth lifestyle like the Pharrell Williams owned RM 88 Automatic Winding Tourbillon Smiley? Perhaps the first thing you should be considering is the impending waitlist that is likely to come with every model you look at.

After all, RM watches are some of the most coveted and desirable timepieces on the planet with wait times longer than a Moonswatch queue…much longer. There are some models which are so rare that they sell out immediately and are only available via the secondary market. For others, you may be on a waitlist with an average wait time of around 1 to 3 years.

Then if we compare other wait times for brands like Rolex, this can be monstrous. For example, the Sky-Dweller runs as high as 8 to 24 months for their waitlist. If that wait time doesn't give you cold shivers, you may find that The Rolex Daytona is the waitlist that spooks you! This collection can yield a waitlist of up to 5 years

Now, Richard Mille releases around 5,300 watches per year which is an exceptionally small amount in comparison with other brands. For example, horological titans like Rolex release approximately 1 million watches per year while Patek Philippe releases around 60,000 watches.

With such a limited amount of timepieces being released and taking in the desirability slash exclusivity factor, you may find that owning a model is swiftly becoming an almost impossible feat! But hang on a tick…let’s not get down in the dumps, Time Peeps…

Without any further exposure, let’s get into our comprehensive guide to understand how the Richard Mille waitlist works.

History Behind Richard Mille

Richard Mille first broke out into the horological world with the aptly named, RM 001 Tourbillon. With a limited edition run of 17 timepieces, they were followed by the RM 002 which featured a new baseplate in titanium and a function indicator with winding, neutral and hand setting positions.

The RM 003 Tourbillon was later released in 2002 with a dual time zone and became a strong influence behind the Le Mans Classic. In 2003, The RM 004 was released as a Split Seconds Chronograph, taking five years to develop with a rattrapante style movement.

In 2004, Richard Mille launched the RM 008 Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph and The RM 005 Automatic which boasts a date and the RM 006. The latter was the start of the ultra-light tourbillon models and worn by F1 star, Felipe Massa.

In 2006, they decided to partner with luxury yacht manufacturers, Perini Navi which subsequently saw the release of the inspired RM 014 Tourbillon Perini Navi that same year. The RM 012 Tourbillon was introduced as one of the brand's most complex watches and minimalist styles.

In 2007, they joined Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie with a new RM 016 release which deviates away from the classic tonneau shape case in favour of a flatter rectangular architecture. The RM 011 Flyback Chronograph Felipe Massa was released and Richard Mille won the Aiguille d’Or at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève for the gorgeous RM 012 Tourbillon.

In 2008, they showed their horological prestige with two outstanding novelties, including the RM 020 Tourbillon Pocket Watch and RM 018 Tourbillon Boucheron which has its movement wheels crafted out of precious metals and stones. The RM 011 Le Mans Classic Limited Edition was released with only 150 watches made, celebrating the 4th edition of the historic race.

In 2009, Richard Mille released their first diving watch and the first round case, The RM 025 Tourbillon Chronograph. In 2010, Richard Mille released the RM 027 Tourbillon which was worn by new partner, Rafael Nadal. In 2011, Richard Mille introduced the RM 017, the first ever flat tourbillon with a rectangular case, and the same year, golf star Bubba Watson and Polo legend Pablo Mac Donough joined Richard Mille’s ranks.

In 2012, Richard Mille released the RM 031 High Performance which is the most accurate watch in the world with an accuracy of less than 30 seconds per day. Richard Mille also releases the RM 056 which is the first tonneau shaped watch made of solid sapphire.

Richard Mille entered aviation with the RM 039 Aviation Chronograph in 2012, and became one of the most complex watches totalling a 1,000 component movement. Richard Mille also partnered with Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake, subsequently resulting in the RM 61-01 being released.

In 2013, Richard Mille went forwards with the RM 27-01 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal that became the lightest tourbillon in the world, with a weight under 18.83 grams. In 2015, The RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur was the first automaton (a watch which mimics movement in the form of the magnolia plant on the dial) and flying tourbillon from the brand.

In 2016, Richard Mille released the RM 68-01 Tourbillon Cyril Kongo which is the first collaboration with a street artist. In 2017, Richard Mille released the RM 50-03 Tourbillon McLaren F1 which was made with The McLaren F1 Team and utilised a new Graph TPT material.

The RM 27-03 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal reaches 10.000G’s of shock resistance in 2017. 12 months later, In 2018, Richard Mille released the RM 53-01 Tourbillon Pablo MacDonough, the second polo watch and the first laminated sapphire glass to ever occur in watchmaking.

In 2019, Richard Mille showed their crazy side with The Bonbon Collection featuring sharp, neon colours. They released The RM 62-01 ACJ  in the same year which features a vibrating alarm within a brand new complication design.

In 2020, Richard Mille released the first in-house flyback chronograph, The RM 72-01. They unveiled the RM 65-01 which represents the first Split Seconds Chronograph which is the most complicated automatic calibre made by the Swiss powerhouse.

They developed the RM 27-04 Rafael Nadal for Roland Garros 2020 that’s their most shock resistant model. In 2021, The RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon Speedtail debuted as a piece perfect for McLaren’s fastest hypercar.

But you are here for the wait times right? And how long it might take to bag yourself a piece of legendary design and ostentatious wrist worthiness…

The case is crafted out of ceramic in a classic tonneau shaping. The watches are bolstered with a free sprung balance with a variable inertia which allows for perfect reliability and accuracy against those bumps, knocks and abrasions.

RM 67-01 Automatic Winding Extra Flat

The case is crafted into the iconic tonneau shape, but capably flattened to suit the man about town that's constantly on the fly. Requiring 6 hours of machining time in order to glean the style, the watches required around 68 different stamping operations across the bezel and caseband. The case took a total of 215 machining options, representing the level of intricate detail within the pieces!

This timepiece may be as thin as a rake, but props go to the dial still with its expansive design, including the miniature 3.60mm thick movement available through the openworked visuals. The dial face is fitted with large steel Arabic numerals that are fixed onto titanium rails.

The grey, industrial colour scheme offers a monochrome styling that allows the piece to be worn in a number of different circumstances, from shooting dice at that new casino to sipping a martini at that posh new cocktail bar. This time, we have to hold our hands up Mr. Craig and bellow mea culpa as we like ours stirred not shaken.

The watches are supported by an AK3 balance spring and INCABLOC shock protectors to confirm the 28,800VpH while providing additional support to the free sprung balance with variable inertia.

Forget all about Bruce Lee entering the dragon or high kicking with Jackie Chan (The Fist of Fury actor collabed with the brand on the scintillating RM 057 Tourbillon Jackie Chan, limited to 36 pieces). Inspired by the crafting history behind the Bushido spirit, the code of ethics behind the Samurai’s, the watches link in with the Asano clan as noted through the Asano family's “kamon” emblem on the tourbillon at 6 o’clock.

This is the same emblem that's spotted on their swords and banners and even their helmet winglets! Taking 4 years to design, the TZP black ceramic watches originated between the brand and Japanese enthusiast and F1 champion, Fernando Alonso. The baseplate and bridges are made out of grade 5 titanium with the “Samurai Armour” (the watch case) produced out of 3N yellow gold

Furthermore, the armour is hand engraved by master artist, Pierre-Alain Lozeron and his wife, Valérie who performed the micro painting press to ensure the lustre of the design.

The models are powered by the Calibre RM47. This tourbillon movement runs a fast rotating barrel that entitles you to 6 hours per revolution as opposed to 7.5 hours, a Glucydur balance, elinvar balance spring and KIF ELASTOR KE 160 B28 shock protection, all of which protect your watches

Offering 21,600VpH and a weekend-proof 72 hour power reserve, they are given a torque limiting crown that is given a Japanese maple leaf for its motif, a beautiful icon atop a fantastic system that prevents overwinding of the models.

For the circular shape, they have gone for a diving theme as per the 300 metre water resistance. The baseplate is crafted out of nanofibre which is capable of withstanding a high fluctuation of temperature and optimal stability in all conditions. The bridges are crafted out of Grade 5 titanium which is highly anti-corrosive and further bolsters the durability of the watches.

There is split-seconds chronograph functionality alongside other elements like a torque and power reserve indicator. This is all protected by a free-sprung balance with a variable inertia that offers fantastic reliability against shocks.

The power of the watches are also improved with a fast-rotating barrel that offers a great 6 hours per revolution instead of 7.5 hours. The movement is supported by KIF Elastor E 160 B28 shock protection and an elinvar by Nivarox balance spring. Boasting a fresh butterfly rotor, this allows the wearer to have control over the automatic winding movement. Combined with a pusher at 7 o’clock (noted as Sports Mode), click it to see a gear train move two weights at 180 degrees to cancel the winding of the rotor within the balance and prevent the calibre from being overwound.

The skeletonised dial is given grade 5 titanium base plates and bridges which undergo black PVD to offer a sporty aesthetic. Fitted with a free-sprung balance with a variable inertia to ensure reliability, the Arabic hour markers are presented on the flange at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and are interjected with luminous yellow triangles between them.

This really is a tip top watch if you want to serve and volley up the ultimate flex on your wrist.  The case is made from Quartz TPT case which has a modest 50 metres of water resistance as secured by two Nitrile O-ring seals. The Calibre RMAL2 offers 55 hours of power reserve and a 28,800VpH which are supported by a Glucydur balance and elinvar balance spring. For us this could possibly be the holiest of grail watches.

Is Demand Higher Than Supply For A Richard Mille?

That’s an easy answer…a resounding yes! They are perpetually in demand which means they can swiftly surpass the level of supply behind the luxury brand.

What this means is that your model that you’ve covertly kept in its box, vault or underground man cave will increase in value on the secondary market and therefore offer a considerably higher value compared to retail prices. While this is excellent for those already in possession of their watches, it unfortunately means you will have to pay a premium to own the storied brand on the secondary market, or sit within the waitlist

The best way to show this is through a horological demo. The RM UP-01 Ferrari as we’ve already discussed is one of the world's thinnest mechanical watches at a miniscule 1.75mm. Combined with its ties to the Ferrari brand and limited to 150 pieces, you can buy a Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari at retail for around £1.480 million. It sells on the secondary market for upwards of a cool £1.5 million as of January 2024.

That’s not all. Another great example is the RM 38-02 Bubba Watson. Associated with legendary golfer Bubba Watson, the watches are capped at 50 pieces and come in an instantly noticeable pink and white coloured case. Selling at retail for around £768,300 as of January 2024, the watches are valued at around £1.9 million on the secondary market. How does an increase of 85% sound? Kerching.

There’s a reason why they have a waitlist time running up to 3 years for some models.

How Real Is The Richard Mille Waitlist?

At Chrono Hunter, we pride ourselves on 100% transparency. That’s why we have to give a very political yes and no response to how real the Richard Mille waitlist is!

If you have recently stepped into an authorised retailer as a complete newbie with no purchase history, background with the dealer, or have any contact and relationship with them, the chances of you getting onto the waiting list with your schmooze alone is finding a Patek Philippe ref 1518.

This historically significant Grande Complication timepiece with perpetual calendar and other elements like a moonphase is illustrious to say the least. Only 281 watches were manufactured with just 4 in stainless steel. How about that for exclusivity.

On the other hand, if you have won the Euromillions and have opted to firstly buy six shelves of their watches before asking for a prized model, we fear you may be leaving with little more than wasted time. If you are lucky, you may have the chance to enter a big old waiting list. Using this knowledge, the idea of the waitlist being a myth is reality as you will never be considered for it.

Even if you do, can you spare a few years without your favourite Richard Mille model? Time is money and money is time as they say.

Five Tips To Get Up The Waitlist Rankings

  • Demonstrate a rich purchase history - We recommend trying to source a few of the less popular models like The RM 07-01 in order to not only show your connection to the brand, but that you will be willing to let go of a large cash sum for your desired watch in order to move up the waitlist.
  • Develop your portfolio of authorised retailers - Try expanding your search area to include more authorised retailers.
  • Dress to impress - While we don’t guarantee the waiting time to reduce, we aren’t lounging about at home. Get on some sharp threads to show that you mean business and aren't there to mess them around. This may be a make or break move to ensure you are on the waitlist and not literally wasting your time.
  • Learn your facts - Build up your knowledge on the brand and don’t be afraid to reel off a few key stats and facts behind the piece you want. Being nervous won’t help your waiting time standings.
  • Be the face that’s always there - The only way you can truly be considered, if you don’t have a recognisable face like John Mayer and Jay-Z, is by constantly showing up until you are deemed to be part of the furniture or boutique store. That doesnt mean to harass the staff and get upset if they don't have your desired model. Be calm, knowledgeable, interact with your dealer and show willingness to get up the waitlist. Simple!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is There A Waitlist For Richard Mille?

Yes, there certainly is a waitlist, but the length of the waiting time depends on the model you wish to choose. For example, you may want the RM 028 which yields a waitlist of around 1-2 years, but there are also some models which are instantly sold out. In this way, you have to look to the secondary market in order to purchase a model.

Why Is It Hard To Get A Richard Mille Watch?

It’s hard to get an RM watch because the brand is eponymous with a rich celebrity clientele that already has their stamp and wrists on many of their timepieces. Throw in its incredibly innovative use of materials, exclusivity, pioneering design as well as inherent rarity and the result is a waiting time period of at least 12 months for many of their models.

Does Richard Mille Lose Value?

In short, no. Their watches are not commonly associated with losing value be it straight from retail or a discontinued model on the secondary market. Releasing very limited numbers, the watches feature highly regarded materials like titanium and carbon fibre, ensuring the longevity and beauty of the pieces which appreciate over time.

Furthermore, the technical features of the watches are also highly celebrated, including skeletonised dials boasting the movement with flyback functionality and even “erotic” functionality that creates explicit three line terms when you press a button. How’s that for forward-thinking innovation!

Why Are Richard Mille’s So Expensive?

They are so expensive because they only release around 5,400 watches per year further enhancing their sought after status. These watches are jam-packed with highly technical movements that are skeletonised and boast the first base plates in titanium and nanofibers, created variable-geometry rotors and declutchable rotors offering first rate precision and shock resistance.

Furthermore, there are a number of models which are collaboration pieces, for example with legendary sportsmen like Bubba Watson and Rafael Nadal. Outside of these collaborations, RM is the brand for the celeb world, including Fernando Alonso, Yohan Blake, Jay-Z, Cristiano Ronaldo and Drake among others.

Is Richard Mille A Good Investment?

RM watches are undeniably superb investments. They are given a very limited production which is enhanced by them having exquisite materials and extensive demand thanks to a number of celebs and wealthy individuals.

This means on the secondary market, the watches can appreciate significantly in value which allows them to be great investment pieces. The quality of the materials used combined with the technical ingenuity of the models means these cutting edge pieces are perfect for those looking to add a little horological spice to their alternative investment portfolio or collection

Can You Resell A Richard Mille?

You most certainly can resell these watches (if you’ve sat through the waitlist or paid your dues on the secondary market). Due to their burgeoning popularity and extremely limited supply, the secondary market will not be swamped with models, so you can sell your Richard Mille for more than you initially bargained for and without doubt achieve the best possible price.

Choosing a platform like Chrono Hunter to sell your Richard Mille is the best way to enjoy the best prices paid for your prized possession. We offer you a number of offers from our network of highly reputable retailers that have been carefully curated by us. We’ve built up an incredible reputation over the years, due to our unparalleled service, speedy turnaround and highly knowledgeable team who are with you every step of the way until completion of the sale.

Conclusion

Right then, Timelords. Hopefully, by the time this article has dropped, your burning question regarding the Richard Mille waitlist has been well and truly answered. Furthermore, you will be well informed about the value and potential on the secondary market.

Well, Chrono Hunter has stepped up and answered all of these queries…and then some. From waiting time durations to best RM watches and its illustrious history, we have all you need to know behind the so called “waitlist”

Perhaps one of the key questions to consider is why you should opt to try and buy a Richard Mille via the secondary market, as opposed to retail:

  • You have the opportunity to access a number of models which are rare, limited edition or vintage that are completely unavailable at retail.
  • The risk of your pre-owned RM losing value is vastly lower than if you sourced a fresh model straight from retail as opposed to the secondary market.
  • You may be able to source a watch from the pre-owned market that’s a little older and has the potential to have increased in value on the secondary market. This won’t be the situation for new models and depends on certain factors including condition, when you bought the model and current market value.
  • Trying to find an RM is exceptionally difficult, especially when compared with other less desirable brands like Cartier and Breitling. Locating a model at retail is therefore very difficult, almost nigh on impossible, not to mention long if you are constantly sitting on the waitlist. However, you can go to the pre-owned marketplace in order to try and gain access to the brand.
  • Retail prices are notorious for being capped to one price. Trying to source a model at retail is almost impossible for RM as they are so hard to glean due to their limited supply. Don’t be dismayed, we recommend you choose Chrono Hunter! We can tap into our list of retailers and source you the watch of your timekeeping dreams no matter how rare the item is. Plus with multiple offers, this allows you to choose the best deal that suits you with the faff of waiting times or sitting on the waitlist.

The general consensus behind most items, luxury or not, is that they will generally lose value when bought from new and resold on the secondary market. However, let’s not bury our heads in the sand too soon. With brands like RM, you are in a much better position of owning a watch that increases in value on the secondary market due to its brand reputation.

It appears that opting to choose a pre-owned watch from the secondary market may be the best option for you. You can be expected to glean a better value figure as opposed to new watches that decrease in value far quicker. This isn’t exclusive to horology. If you choose to buy a brand new car straight off the showroom floor, you can anticipate an immediate drop in value. In the watch world, we recommend you look for scarcer or exclusive models that are more likely to increase the price over time on secondary markets.

For pre-owned Richard Mille watches it’s best that you opt to source a watch via Chrono Hunter. Our list of retailers who are masters of the pre-owned watch world allows you to negate the waitlist, saving you time and money while sourcing a model via our dedicated app. Available on both Apple and Android devices, our distinctive model offers you live offers from our network of retailers…in real time.
