Geneva Watch Days 2024: Our Hot Horological Picks

Tick-tock, Geneva Watch Days 2024 just dropped the bomb to end all horological bombs. And we're here to sift through the timekeeping shrapnel and show you the shiniest bits.

From Breitling's birthday bash complete with a trio of limited-edition stunners like that Super Chronomat B19 44 Perpetual Calendar or Bulgari’s carbon-clad Octo Finissimo, resembling one of Batman's latest dress watches, the big names brought their A-game to the table…or symposium.

A. Lange & Söhne flexed their engraving muscles with the Datograph Handwerkskunst, while Girard-Perregaux's revamped Tourbillon proved that even icons can get a glow-up.

But hold onto your hats for a second, because the independents weren't messing around either. Jostling for position among the top Swiss luxury brands was the M.A.D.1S slimmed down which got seriously sexy. Meanwhile, Urwerk unveiled the Space Time Blade that puts the humble Speedmaster to shame, and there were whispers of a new Patek Philippe entry-level sports novelty that'll make collectors drool next month.

Anyone for Cubitus?

Geneva Watch Days 2024 was a total smorgasbord of delights, from classic complications to avant-garde oddities that'll make your jaw drop. Whether seasoned connoisseurs or curious first-timers, no matter your level of timepiece expertise, it delivered passion on a never-before seen level.

Well, that was until the release of the Passion Project introduced by H. Moser & Cie. and Studio Underd0g with their H. Moser & Cie. A collaboration that brought you the latest H. Moser & Cie Endeavour Perpetual Calendar and the Studio Underd0g 03SERIES. Two seriously fun and fruity watches that prove high horology doesn't have to take itself too seriously. Game. Set.

Oh wait, there’s more! Bvlgari also brought back the iconic Serpenti Pallini with three new yellow gold beauties. A modern take on the 1955 classic, but this time with the world's smallest mechanical movement tucked inside. Talk about a snake with some serious bite!

And hold on tight, because Frederique Constant decided to turn up the heat with their summer collection. Their Classic Tourbillon Manufacture now rocks an aventurine glass face that'll have you stargazing on your wrist. Limited to just 36 pieces, it's a collector's dream come true.

But wait, there's more eye candy! They also gave their Classic Moonphase Date Manufacture a makeover with a spellbinding malachite face. Each piece is unique thanks to the natural pattern of the stone. It's like having a tiny slice of art on your wrist.

Anyway gents, it's time to discover the best new novelties from GWD 24.

Buckle up; it's going to be a wild ride!

Highlights Of Geneva Watch Days 2024

Forget stuffy boardrooms, champagne flutes and smoked salmon canapes – Geneva Watch Days 2024 proved that the real party is where the horological rebels and pirates gather!

From August 29th to September 2nd, the Rotonde du Mont-Blanc transformed into an enthusiasts nirvana, showcasing over 100 jaw-dropping watches from 52 of the top luxury brands on the planet. It was a whirlwind of innovation, artistry, and unadulterated Horology passion to rival Studio Underd0g and H. Moser & Cie.

It was a celebration of the enduring spirit of timekeeping, where tradition met cutting-edge cool. Heritage brands like the Breitling have pulled out all the stops for their 140th anniversary, dropping limited-edition models that had collectors drooling.

Meanwhile, legendary Maisons like Girard-Perregaux and A. Lange & Söhne reminded us why they're the masters of their craft, showcasing timepieces that blend timeless elegance with mind-blowing technical prowess.

Speaking of showstoppers, Girard-Perregaux's newly revamped Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges is a sight to behold. They've taken a modern classic and elevated it to new heights of sophistication with subtle yet impactful refinements.

And let's not forget the A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Handwerkskunst – a sheer masterpiece of hand-engraving that would halt Banksy in his tracks. But GWD 2024 wasn't and never will be about the big boys. Independent timecrafters stole the show with their daring designs and groundbreaking innovations.

It was a reminder that the true spirit of horology lies in pushing boundaries and challenging conventions.

Of course, no timepiece event would be complete without a touch of luxury and a dash of the unexpected. Alongside the groundbreaking M.A.D.1S, Bvlgari made waves with their Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon.

A true masterpiece that blends feather-light carbon with accents of rose gold, it exhibited a symphony of contrasts that's both edgy and elegant. No question, Bulgari's ability to push the boundaries of horological art while maintaining its signature Italian flair is simply unmatched.

Oh, and there's more! Oris teamed up with Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) and launched a limited-edition Divers Sixty-Five to support children's charities. A beautiful blue timepiece with a heartwarming backstory, proving that luxury and social responsibility can go hand-in-hand.

Meanwhile, Favre Leuba is making a comeback with a bang!

Like Marty McFly, their Chief collection is back with a 70s-inspired twist. Think bold lines, textured dials, and a whole lot of retro charm. And to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their Deep Blue line, they're bringing back the original design alongside a modern reinterpretation.

GWD in 2024 truly had something for everyone. From high-octane releases to heartwarming collaborations and stylish revivals, it was a testament to the enduring passion and creativity of the wrist clockmaking world.

Breitling: 140th Anniversary Watches - Caliber B19 for Premier, Navitimer, and Chronomat

Breitling celebrated its 140th birthday in grand style at this year's event…and they brought the party favours too! Three exciting new limited-edition models - the Premier, Navitimer, and Super Chronomat - each powered by the groundbreaking Caliber B19 mechanism, stole the show.

Super Chronomat B19 44 Perpetual Calendar

This Super Chronomat is more than just a pretty face. It's a horological powerhouse that flexes some serious specs. This brand new model is home to the B19 Manufacture calibre, signalling Breitling's first foray into perpetual calendar chronographs

With a jaw-dropping 96-hour power reserve and accuracy that's built to last for nearly a century, this robust timepiece is living proof the brand isn't just talking the talk; they're walking the walk when it comes to crafting a movement that's as reliable as it is refined.

Ticking at a smooth 28,800 vibrations per hour and boasting 39 jewels, this intricate mechanism is a marvel of micro-engineering, visible through the skeletonized display.

With a 44mm casing diameter and crafted from solid 18k red gold, it exudes luxury on and off the wrist. But don't be fooled for a minute – it's also built for adventure with 10 bars of water resistance and a functional unidirectional rotating bezel. The black rubber strap with 18k red gold folding clasp adds a touch of sporty elegance, making it ready for any special occasion from wedding to week away in the Seychelles.

This Super Chronomat isn't just a rehash of the past; it's a reimagining of a legend. All those signature Chronomat design elements we have grown to love are there, but with a modern twist, including a first-ever skeletonized dial that offers a glimpse into the intricate B19 mechanism. Weighing in at a substantial 220 grams, this is a timepiece that feels as impressive as it looks.

Clearly a classy chronometer that is a perfect addition that will go a long way to celebrate Breitling's 140 years of fine timekeeping, sublime aviation spirit and unwavering commitment to pushing time-keeping boundaries.

Navitimer B19 Chronograph 43 Perpetual Calendar

The brand didn't stop there at GWD 2024.

They also unveiled the new Navitimer B19 Chronograph 43 Perpetual Calendar 140th Anniversary edition, a testament to their ongoing pursuit of horological excellence and a tribute to their pilot heritage.

Powered by the same impressive B19 Manufacture calibre, it delivers exceptional accuracy and a whopping 96-hour power reserve. The 43mm 18k red gold case exudes timeless elegance, and the bidirectional slide rule bezel adds a touch of aviation-inspired functionality.

Wait, let me tell you about the all black alligator leather strap with its 18k red gold folding clasp that perfectly complements the luxurious overall aesthetic.

This timepiece would be a joy to wear, whether you're soaring through the skies or attending a black-tie affair. It's a reimagining of a legend, blending the classic circular slide rule bezel, 18k red-gold dial, and perpetual calendar complication, into a timepiece that's both functional and breathtakingly beautiful.

Premier B19 Datora 42 140th Anniversary

The next Breitling 140th Anniversary edition timepiece, putting the horological cherry on the cake, is the Premier B19 Datora 42, a shining example of Breitling's relentless pursuit of horological perfection.

Again, this model is powered by the groundbreaking B19 Manufacture calibre, a legacy in the making. Beating at a steady 28,800 vibrations per hour and boasting an impressive 96-hour power reserve. The 42mm case, crafted from 18k red gold, exudes refined sophistication. Its fixed bezel and non-screw-locked crown offer a sleek and elegant aesthetic while maintaining a water resistance of 10 bars - enough to handle a dip in the pool or a sudden downpour.

The black alligator leather wristband, with its subtle curve and 18k red gold folding clasp, perfectly complements the Datora’s understated elegance.

This Premier pays homage to the original, a timepiece that redefined the chronograph in the 1940s. This modern reinterpretation retains the Premier's signature design elements while adding a touch of contemporary flair. It seamlessly blends heritage and innovation, creating a timepiece that's both timeless and modern.

These three limited-edition watches, each powered by the groundbreaking Caliber B19 movement, are limited to just…you guessed it…140 pieces only, priced around £46,000  (€55,000) at the time of writing. With its combination of classic design, innovative technology, and limited availability, the Premier B19 Datora 42 is a true collector's item, a testament to Breitling's 140 years of timekeeping excellence.

Girard-Perregaux: The Three Bridge Tourbillon

Hold onto your hats, timepiece aficionados, because Girard-Perregaux is back at Geneva Watch Days 2024 with a new showstopper that as Berlin sang in 1986, will take your breath away.

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

They've taken their iconic Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges, a chronometer that's been turning heads since its debut in 2021, and given it a makeover that's as subtle as it is stunning.

Let's rewind for a second.

Back in 1867, Girard-Perregaux dropped a horological mic drop thanks to the 'Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges.' This wasn't just any tourbillon; it was a masterpiece of design, where the typically hidden bridges were transformed into a work of art. It was a release that dared to make the invisible visible, and set the stage for Girard-Perregaux's legacy of pure, unadulterated innovation.

Besides, they are so much more than the Laureato aren't they?

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

Fast forward to 2024, and Girard-Perregaux is once again pushing the boundaries with the new Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges.

This isn't just a reissue; it's a reimagining of an icon. It retains its signature three gold bridges, now dressed in sleek black PVD with chamfered edges that reveal glimpses of gleaming pink gold. But it's the subtle details that make this truly special.

Newly designed indexes with twin batons at noon add a touch of modern elegance, while more curved and symmetrical sapphire crystals create a sense of depth and dimension. The larger, rounder crown is a nod to practicality, making it easier to wind and set.

The overall design has been refined with smoother contours, shorter lugs, and a rounder shell middle, ensuring a comfortable fit on any wrist.

But Girard-Perregaux didn't stop there.

The brand unveiled the La Esmeralda Tourbillon 'A Secret' Eternity Edition Honey, a limited edition of a mere 18 pieces that's as decadent as a Rolex Daytona Rainbow.

This 43mm pink gold beauty features the iconic Three Gold Bridges and a honey-coloured Grand Feu enamel visage that's simply mesmerising.

The case and lugs are dressed in honey-toned Grand Feu enamel, creating a cohesive and luxurious aesthetic. The case back features a pink gold honey-colour enamelled cover, revealing a sapphire crystal window to showcase the intricate mechanical mechanism.

The timepiece is powered by the in-house GP09600-2083 calibre, a self-winding mechanical movement with a minimum power reserve of 50 hours. In addition to the hours and minutes, the watch features a small seconds hand on the tourbillon.

With a retail price of £381,000, this limited edition timepiece is a true pinnacle of luxury.

Moreover, the rear of the Tourbillon is engraved with a fluted pattern and the signature three galloping horses, a nod to Girard-Perregaux's rich equestrian heritage. The brand has a long-standing association with horses, dating back to the 19th century when it produced pocket timepieces for horse racing devotees

The three galloping horses symbolise speed, power, and elegance, reflecting the brand's commitment to creating exceptional horology. For aficionados or newcomers to the world of Haute Horlogerie, Girard-Perregaux's latest creations are sure to leave you captivated. They're a reminder that true luxury lies in the finer details, and that the pursuit of horological excellence is a never-ending journey.

It well and truly is the Black Beauty of high-end watches.

A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Handwerkskunst

A. Lange & Söhne, never one to shy away from horological extravagance, unveiled a new Datograph Handwerkskunst this year. These limited edition timepieces are not just average everyday numbers; they’re a symphony of artisanal craftsmanship and technical brilliance.

First off, let’s take time out to marvel at the dial.

Crafted from 750 gold with a black rhodium finish, the main display features an ornate tremblage engraving, painstakingly hand-engraved by artisans at the A. Lange & Söhne manufacture. The light grey totalizers provide a subtle contrast, while the yellow gold indices and hands add a touch of warmth and luxury.

It's an indicator that demands a closer inspection, revealing intricate details that highlights the unparalleled skill of the brand's engravers.

Beneath the captivating face lies the lavishly finished manufacture calibre L951.8. This hand-wound mechanism boasts a weekend-proof 60-hour power reserve and features a classic column-wheel chronograph with a flyback mechanism, jumping minute counter as well as that trusted A. Lange & Söhne outsize date.

The black-polished chronograph levers and hand-engraved balance cock with filigreed vine pattern are just a few examples of the exceptional finishing that sets it apart. Mind you they have an impressive legacy behind them especially if we whisper the word Zeitwerk to you with a trio of jumping displays and constant force escapement.

Clearly, this is a timepiece that transcends time.

M.A.D.ness Returns: The M.A.D.1S is Slimmer, Sexier

Don’t worry, there won’t be any Suggs related jokes going on here.

Max Büsser and his merry band of misfits at M.A.D. Editions are back at it again, and they've just dropped another new novelty at Geneva Watch Days 2024: the M.A.D.1S.

This bad boy has hit the gym, shed some serious bulk, and emerged leaner, meaner, and ready to rock your wrist. Meaner than the Audemars Piguet “End of Days” reference 26420CE, for the first time ever, this bad boy is rocking a Swiss-made heart – a modified La Joux-Perret G101 automatic calibre that'll keep ticking for a solid 68 hours.

And to achieve that svelte 15mm thickness (20% slimmer than its predecessors!), they've streamlined the design with a single-barrel time display and sleek, refined lugs.

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

A mad edition indeed.

Don't worry, though; it's still got that signature M.A.D. DNA. You'll still be reading the time sideways off that rotating hour disc, and the battle-worn 316L stainless steel case, that’s right steel and it is ready for anything life throws at it (well, maybe not deep-sea diving – it's only water-resistant to 30 metres).

But don't let the slimmed-down physique fool you.

These watches are still packed with all the quirky charm and horological muscle that made the original M.A.D.1 more of a cult classic than The Incredible Hulk, or Batman. You still get that iconic side-reading time display, mesmerising spinning rotor, and that unmistakable Büsser touch.

Now, here's the deal: The M.A.D.1S ain't technically limited, but only 1,500 of these little blue beauties are up for grabs in this batch. MB&F's "Friends" and "Tribe" get first dibs on a special purple-accented version, but the rest of us will have to duke it out in a raffle.

The M.A.D.1S is proof that you don't need a Swiss bank account to own a piece of Max Büsser's creative genius. It's playful, sophisticated, and at CHF 2,900 (about £2,552), it's a chance to strap a piece of horological art onto your wrist without selling a kidney. So, what are you waiting for? Get your name in that raffle and cross your fingers, toes and everything else!

The M.A.D.1S is a testament to Büsser's vision and the boundless creativity of the M.A.D. Editions team. One that's both playful and sophisticated, quirky and as refined as an Oscars after-party.

Bulgari Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon

Bulgari got in on the act at GWD 2024 with the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon. It's a stealth bomber wrapped in a tuxedo, a symphony of contrasts that'll leave you speechless (well, until you activate the chimes). And this brand knows how to execute thin timepieces.

Take the Octo Finissimo Ultra, reclaiming a spot at the pinnacle of ultra-thin horology at a mind-boggling 1.80mm thin, a mere hair's breadth away from the record-holding Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari at 1.75mm. Both are a testament to the relentless pursuit of pushing horological boundaries.

For those with a taste for the truly avant-garde, the best Richard Mille watches offer a glimpse into the future of horology, where technical prowess and unapologetic boldness collide, sporting mechanisms that are as elegant as they are immediately recognisable.

But Bulgari isn't done yet. Stepping away from the race for ultra-thin, they unveil a timepiece that's all about stealth wealth and subtle sophistication. Forget flashy gold and diamonds; this new model is all about understated cool to rival George Clooney sipping a Nespresso in an old time Venetian cafe.

The case, strap, and visage are forged from feather-light carbon fibre, giving it a dark, mysterious vibe that whispers "I'm expensive" without shouting it from the rooftops.

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

But don't mistake subtlety for simplicity. Those satin-polished rhodium-finish brass accents on the crown and indexes? Pure class, a reminder that this is still Bulgari, baby.

At a mere 6.85mm thick, this model is thinner than a supermodel's waistline. But don't let its svelte profile fool you; it packs a serious horological punch. The BVL 362 calibre, a hand-wound marvel of micro-engineering, delivers a minute repeater complication that's as clear as a bell. Imagine a symphony of chimes echoing from your wrist, telling the time in the most elegant way possible.

This Bulgari ain't for the faint of heart (or wallet). It's a statement piece for the collector who appreciates innovation, craftsmanship, and a touch of the unexpected. It doesn’t matter if you're a seasoned connoisseur or dipping your toes into the world of Haute Horlogerie. This sleek wrist companion is guaranteed to turn heads and spark conversations.

So, if you're ready to embrace the dark side of luxury, the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater Carbon is calling your name. Fit for spooktacular Halloween get-togethers, Christmas office parties and ritzy red carpet affairs, be prepared to explain to your friends why your’s looks like a ninja but sounds like an orchestra.

Best Place To Buy A Luxury Watch  Best Place To Sell A Luxury Watch

All this proves that high end apparel doesn't have to scream for attention. Innovation can be hidden in plain sight, and that sometimes, the most beautiful things are the ones that make you lean in closer. And we at Chrono Hunter couldn't agree more – this Bulgari is a prime example of that epic philosophy.

Rest Of The Best From Geneva Watch Days 2024

A conveyor belt of timekeeping treats was on display for all and sundry and it was a bit like being in an authentic Gelateria…we couldn't decide on a specific one.

Yet flavour of the month goes to the mouth watering Studio Underdog & H. Moser & Cie Passion Fruit Collab, with perpetual calendar and chronometer alongside a monopusher mechanism, with pops of passion fruit colour.

Other other hot picks that we took away with us included;

  • Czapek & Cie: Antarctique Polar Sky and Antarctique Flying Diamonds
  • Hautlence: Funky Radio Inspired One Retrovision '47
  • Arnold and Son: 38mm Perpetual Moon
  • Jacob & Co: 44mm Oil Pump Timepiece
  • Corum: Golden Bridge “Serpent”
  • Armin Strom: 39mm Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition
  • Cvstos: Sealiner PS Blue Sapphire
  • De Bethune: DB28xs Aérolite and DB28xs Steel Wheels
  • Daniel Roth: Tourbillon in Rose Gold
  • Oris: 43.5mm Aquis Chronograph
  • Favre Leuba New collections: Chief, Deep Blue, and Sea Sky Chronographs
  • Armin Strom: Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition

Conclusion

So then what's the verdict from Geneva Watch Days 2024?

Clearly this event was a cacophony of horological brilliance, showcasing what the world’s best artisans and craftsmen have to offer this year. With several brands pushing boundaries, one of the most remarkable debuts was Konstantin Chaykin's ThinKing, setting a new world record for the thinnest mechanical wrist ticker at an astonishing 1.65 mm thick.

This smiley-face visual will no doubt turn that frown upside down in an instant.

Unveiling the second prototype, the 40mm ThinKing sounds like a pair of pumped up uber costly sneakers. Far from it. A marvel of engineering, this “special stainless steel” (their words not ours) number is a ludicrous weight of 13.3 grams.

That’s less than a compact disc, a slice of bread and a paper clip with the K.23-0 movement located within the case. Who cares if it only whizzes around at 2.5Hz. Nonetheless, it does come equipped with among other things a Swiss lever escapement, ultra-slim winding barrel, and double balance system complete with geared clutch.

After all, many brands are setting the bar high (or should that be super thin) to achieve the world’s thinnest mechanical watch.

An achievement which solidified their position alongside brands like Bulgari, Piaget, and Richard Mille, the latter who produced the RM UP-01 Ferrari at a chunky 1.75mm! Prototype or not, publicity or not, Konstantin Chaykin swooned the room and Beau Rivage at Geneva Watch Days 2024

From Breitling's anniversary extravaganza to Bulgari's carbon-clad chronograph masterpieces, including the Octo Finissimo Ultra, which reclaimed a spot at the pinnacle of ultra-thin watchmaking at a mind-boggling 1.80mm thin, not to mention the M.A.D. Editions with their stainless steel Armor, this year's bonanza left many regulars speechless.

There was a drive in independent chronometry with their own design drive and stories to tell.

But the excitement didn't stop there. Brands like H. Moser & Cie, De Bethune, Fortis, and Oris with their new 43.5mm Aquis Chronograph presented their own unique interpretations of artistry, proving that innovation isn't limited to the usual suspects. And let's not forget the captivating Daniel Roth Tourbillon in Rose Gold – a reminder that in a sea of cutting-edge designs, classic elegance still reigns supreme.

Geneva Watch Days 2024 was a testament to the boundless creativity and passion that drives the industry forward, showcasing a diverse range of brands, each with their own distinct voice and vision, sans presence of the big giants like Rolex or Cartier.

For us, it was the indie brands that stole the show in 2024, demonstrating the true depth of what’s going on in the industry at the present time. It’s not a case of Goodnight Vienna, more like so long Geneva.

It’s been emotional…
